    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation - dates generally track official records but the page is not a primary registry. Key claims corroborated independently here: builder/completion/disposition by the shipbuilding-history build table (ev-02); Crossroads target-vessel status by the official NHHC JTF-1 composition document (ev-03) and the BuShips administrative-history target-ship list (ev-08); survival of both shots by the NHHC sunk lists (ev-04); the 10 Aug 1946 scuttling off the Bikini Lagoon entrance by the NHHC disposition list (ev-05), NPS SCRC-37 (ev-07), and bikiniatoll.com (ev-06). The Allen M. Sumner gunfire detail (167 rounds) rests on the NavSource/Turner sourcing only - DANFS places DD-692 on Crossroads support duty in that window but does not name this hull; the DD-692 August 1946 deck log is not digitized. The page prints the decommissioning date as unknown. Contains no asbestos or material content.

The build table lists: LCI(L) | hull 620 | New Jersey SB, Barber NJ | 31-May-44 | 'Sunk at Bikini 10-Aug-46' - corroborating the builder, yard location, completion date, and Bikini sinking on the NavSource page. Surrounding rows (617-626) show the same New Jersey Shipbuilding/Barber block with May-June 1944 completions. The same site's New Jersey Shipbuilding yard summary page tags hull 620 'Target at Bikini' - consistent this time (compare sister 549's erroneous 'Destroyed at Bikini' tag, corrected in that record).

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The official JTF-1 composition lists LCI-620 once: under Task Unit 1.2.5 (Landing Craft Unit), LCI Group 7 [LCI GRU 7], listed WITHOUT asterisk - i.e., a TARGET vessel in the Bikini target array for the atomic tests (the TG 1.2 preamble legend: 'Nontarget ships (*) supported preparation, placement, and salvage of the targets'). LCI Group 7 comprised six landing craft: LCI-327, LCI-329, LCI-332, LCI-620, LCI(L)-549, LCI(L)-615. Unlike sisters 329, 549, and 615, LCI-620 does NOT appear on the TU 1.2.12 (Kwajalein Maintenance Force) nontarget list - consistent with her being scuttled at Bikini on 10 August 1946 before the fleet's move to Kwajalein was accomplished.

Target vessels were unmanned during the detonations (all personnel evacuated to the support fleet per the NHHC fact sheet). NHHC Crossroads sunk lists: Able (full document, no landing craft section); Baker, 'Landing Craft' section (LSM-60 only)
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
LCI-620 appears on NEITHER official sunk list: the Able sunk list (Sakawa; USS Anderson DD-411; USS Lamson DD-367; USS Carlisle APA-69; USS Gilliam APA-57) contains no landing craft at all, and the Baker sunk list (USS Arkansas BB-33; Nagato; USS Saratoga CV-3; USS Apogon SS-308; USS Pilotfish SS-386; ARDC-13; LSM-60 'Surface Zero Ship'; YO-160) has only one landing craft, LSM-60. She therefore survived both detonations - bikiniatoll.com records she was 'deliberately beached before Baker shot' (ev-06), which the NHHC fact sheet generalizes: the landing craft beached on Bikini Island were among the exceptions to the post-Baker contamination regime.

The same list fixes her LCI Group 7 sisters' fates for comparison: LCI-327 destroyed on Bascombe (Mek) Island, Kwajalein, 30 October 1947; LCI-329 scuttled off Kwajalein, 16 March 1948; LCI-332 scuttled off Kwajalein, September 1947; LCI-549 and LCI-615 each sold to a private party in California, 19 August 1949. LCI-620 was the only one of the six sunk at Bikini itself - on the same date (10 August 1946) the decision was made to tow the surviving target fleet to Kwajalein (ev-09).

This is consistent with the NHHC fact sheet's note that 'the landing craft beached on Bikini Island' were among the exceptions to the post-Baker contamination regime (ev-09).

The Bureau of Ships' official administrative history names 'LCI 620' in its List of Target Ships for Operation Crossroads (Chapter XXII), a second official-source confirmation of this hull's target-vessel status. The same chapter documents the material-disturbance regime applied to target landing craft as a class: target vessels 'were assigned availabilities at the various naval shipyards' for 'urgent repairs to hull, machinery, and electrical equipment,' and 'Work on the target Auxiliaries, Destroyers, Submarines, and Landing Craft remained the responsibility of the Naval Shipyard, Pearl Harbor,' with certain equipment removed from target vessels before the test.

Operation-level radiological context for this hull's 1946 terminal phase: all personnel were evacuated from the target fleet before each detonation; after BAKER 'most of the target fleet [was] bathed in radioactive water spray and radioactive debris,' and 'with the exception of 12 target vessels anchored in the array and the landing craft beached on Bikini Island, the target fleet remained too radiologically contaminated for several weeks for more than brief on-board activities'; a target-vessel decontamination program began about 1 August 1946 under radiological supervision with a 0.1 roentgen/day limit and ~18,875 film-badge dosimeters issued; 'By 10 August, a decision was made to stop work in Bikini and tow the surviving target fleet to Kwajalein Atoll' - the same day this hull was scuttled off the lagoon entrance. 'The remaining target ships were destroyed by sinking off Bikini Atoll, off Kwajalein Atoll, or near the Hawaiian Islands during 1946-1948.'

A diesel-powered landing craft built April-May 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type were diesel exhaust and muffler lagging, gaskets and valve packing in engine and piping systems, electrical insulation on wiring and in control panels, and thermal insulation in the confined machinery spaces. As a diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam ships does not apply.

Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation schedule, material list, builder's spec sheet, or work package located for LCI(L)-620. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution. New Jersey Shipbuilding is not in the Atlas shipyards.json dataset, so no yard-level product list was attached; the documented Pearl Harbor NSY target-preparation availability (ev-08) is described only at class level in the BuShips history.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1944) and U.S. Navy service era (1944-46).

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LCI(L)-620 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger), and CourtListener returned zero opinions and zero dockets under all tested name forms. The hull's documented material-disturbance events are the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard target-preparation availability for Crossroads landing craft (class level, ev-08), the Bikini target-array exposure, deliberate beaching, and scuttling (1946) - no asbestos documentation was located for any of them. The Crossroads phase produced radiological-control documentation at program level (ev-09) but no asbestos-related record surfaced in the sources searched.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. Open leads: undigitized deck logs (SL44 window 5/31/1944-6/30/1945), NJSB build records, JTF-1 target-preparation and radiological survey files at NARA, and the DD-692 August 1946 deck log (not digitized) for the scuttling detail. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
