NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation - its timeline generally tracks official sources and is corroborated here by the NHHC awards manual and declassified NARA records, but it is not a primary registry. Page history text is credited to 'USS LCI Landing Craft Infantry,' Vol. II (Turner Publishing, 1995); the Jinsen/Nashville details are crew-account captions, i.e., eyewitness recollections rather than official logs. 'Decommissioned, date unknown' per this page. Contains no asbestos content.

Ship-submitted monthly war diaries for this hull, verified at image level: Aug 1943 (attached LCI(L) Group 13, Flotilla 5, ComLandCraft SoPac, TF 31) - availability for repairs at Carter City, Florida Island, 'Repairs finished except for Bilge Pump Armatures,' repairs completed and reported ready for service 2-5 August, then practice embarkations with 35th Infantry troops at Guadalcanal; Sep 1943 - New Georgia boat-pool operations from Poko Plantation, Rendova, beaching and troop/supply lifts with LCIs 63, 68, 69, 22 and LSTs 167, 397; Oct 1943 (Group 15 Temporary) - annual inspection 4 October, 'Availability period for engine overhaul' 5-8 October, dry-dock entry at Carter City 17 October, undocking 19 October; Nov 1943 (Group 15 Temporary) - company with LCIs 63, 65, 333; beached Kukum Beach, Guadalcanal; second Carter City dry-docking 6-7 November for repairs. These are contemporaneous records of operations AND of documented maintenance availabilities (engine overhaul; three dry-dock/repair periods).

    Limitations
Contemporaneous operational records: they document that maintenance availabilities, an engine overhaul, and dry-dockings occurred - events in which any installed era insulation/gasket materials would be disturbed - but they record no materials content and make no asbestos statement. Digitized coverage is partial: four months (Aug-Nov 1943) of the hull's ~40-month commissioned life; other months may exist on microfilm (roll A734 carries Nov 43; micro serials 55511, 56559, 57835, 61347) but were not surfaced in catalog results before API throttling limited further queries.

    Finding
Crew muster rolls for this hull digitized at NARA: 55 images covering rolls dated 11 December 1942 (commissioning-period forwarding sheet, N.Nav.5 form, certified by the Executive Officer and approved by the Commanding Officer, an Ensign USNR) through 30 June 1944. The forwarding sheet bears a hand annotation reading 'Comm 12-11-42 To 3-25-46 Decomm' - indicating the roll binder covered commissioning through a 25 March 1946 decommissioning, a date absent from NavSource ('date unknown'). The December 1942 rolls predate the 12 December commissioning date and document the assembling crew.

    Limitations
Muster rolls document crew membership by name - the aboard population relevant to any personnel-level exposure inquiry - but contain no material or asbestos content. The '3-25-46' decommissioning figure is a hand-written pencil annotation of uncertain authorship (archivist or ship personnel) on a forwarding sheet - carried as partial verification, not a confirmed milestone. Digitized coverage ends June 1944; LCI(G)-era rolls (post-conversion complement ~70) were not surfaced. Scanned via the NARA-Ancestry partnership.

For the 9 January 1945 Lingayen Gulf (San Fabian) assault, the unit 'was on station 500 yards shoreward of the line of departure to BLUE Beach TWO, ahead of the leading wave of LVT's'; 'The LCI(G) 64 gave the range by using their Radar' for the rocket ships; 'The LCI(G) 64,226 and 337 patroled [sic] the left flank of BLUE Beach ONE as far as the BUED River.' No enemy seen, no fire received from shore, no battle damage or personnel injury; ships anchored off Blue Beach at sunset 9 January and returned to San Pedro Bay commencing 10 January 1945. Enclosure (A) is 'Action Report LCI(G) 64' - marked 'previously photostated' and not physically present in this 15-page scan. The scan is hosted on 727atb.com (a private unit-history collection); the document itself is a NARA-declassified original (declassification stamp visible on each page) whose archival original is in the NARA action-reports series. Unit-award listing - the NUC attaches to the ship as a unit for the named engagements; it does not document materials or conditions aboard. Finding
A diesel-powered amphibious landing craft built in 1942 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard asbestos applications aboard a diesel craft of this type and period were: diesel engine and exhaust manifold/muffler lagging, gaskets and flange packing, valve packing, electrical insulation, and interior thermal/acoustic insulation and deck coverings in crew spaces. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. The war diaries' documented engine-overhaul availability (Oct 1943) and dry-dockings are the kind of maintenance events in which era insulation and gasket materials would be disturbed.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed asbestos case naming USS LCI(L)-64 / LCI(G)-64 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener opinion searches returned zero for 'LCI(L)-64', 'LCI(G)-64', 'LCI-64', and 'LCI 64' + asbestos; the docket search returned a single name collision (Stephanie A Holt bankruptcy, N.D. Ill. 12-29018, 2012 - a personal bankruptcy, not asbestos litigation naming this hull). A supplementary yard-level CourtListener query on 'Consolidated Steel' asbestos could not be completed - fleet pacing budget exhausted on each attempt - logged as blocked/pending, not a negative result. Secondary sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only asbestos-ship content is generic law-firm listicle coverage (e.g., mesotheliomahope.com) - excluded by source policy. Searchers should note 'LCI 64' is also a pharmaceutical pill imprint (chlorpromazine 100mg) - a known collision class.

CORRECTION/CLARIFICATION: (1) NavSource carries no decommissioning date; the commissioning muster-roll forwarding sheet bears a hand annotation indicating the roll ran 'Comm 12-11-42 To 3-25-46 Decomm' - i.e., decommissioned 25 March 1946, consistent with the 17 April 1946 stricking (decommission ~3 weeks before strike is the standard sequence). (2) The 1953 awards manual prints 'USS LCI (6) 64' - a typographic error for LCI(G)-64 (the parenthetical designator, not a numeral). (3) uboat.net lists 'End service' blank for this hull - the muster-roll annotation supplies the probable date.
