Award display: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal (Asia clasp). Spec block: displacement 236 t. light / 264 t. landing / 419 t. loaded; length 158' 5.5"; complement 4 officers + 24 enlisted; five single 20mm guns; 2-inch plastic splinter protection on gun turrets, conning tower and pilot house; GM diesels, twin variable-pitch propellers. Photo captions document the ship enroute Honolulu to Okinawa in September 1945 and the contributing officer (LTjg Herb F. Depke) at Okinawa NOB in October 1945, including Typhoon Louise wreckage views.

- NavSource is a volunteer-run archive compiling official and contributor records; its history here is credited to the Turner Publishing LCI volume. Decommission/struck dates are expressly 'unknown'; troop capacity in its spec block (6 officers/182 enlisted) is the generic early LCI(L) figure, not the 351-class figure (9/196 per ONI 226 and HAER AK-52); '6051 series 71' in its propulsion line is a misprint for the GM Series 71 diesel (confirmed by HAER AK-52). Contains no asbestos information; the typhoon-wreckage photos document the contributor's location, not damage to this hull.

- Locator
- HAER AK-52 data pages 5-7 (contract 1261, yard history, LCI(L)-351-class design description) and title block (class data)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- LCI(L)-641 was built under contract no. 1261 at New Jersey Shipbuilding, Barber, N.J. - the contract comprised hulls 641 through 657, delivered to the government in July and August 1944 (HAER AK-52 documents the contract block in recording sister hull LCI(L)-653). The yard was an assembly-line LCI producer on Arthur Kill employing about 2,500 workers, managed by Todd Shipyards from 1942 at the Navy's request, producing 375 LCI(L)s (hulls 239-318, 423-657, 782-821, 866-884) and dismantled after the war. As a hull built after 1 June 1944, she was built with the late-design single double-file centerline bow ramp through bow doors - Friedman (as cited in the HAER) enumerates the bow-ramp units as including LCI(L)s 641-657. Class construction: all-welded steel; 158'5.5" o.a.; 387 long tons loaded; eight six-cylinder GM Series 71 diesel truck engines, four per shaft; five 20mm guns; 2-inch plastic splinter protection (crushed granite in bitumen) on gun tubs, conning tower, and pilot house sides; complement four officers and twenty-four sailors; troop load nine officers and 196 enlisted.

- Construction trades at New Jersey Shipbuilding, Barber NJ (~2,500 workers, yard-level)
- Limitations
- The HAER subject is sister hull LCI(L)-653; it names contract 1261 (hulls 641-657) and the bow-ramp unit list explicitly, so the contract/delivery-window and design-variant facts attach to this hull - but delivery month for the individual hull is bracketed (Jul-Aug 1944), not pinpointed. The 10-page construction narrative describes materials (welded steel, plastic/bitumen splinter protection) but makes no asbestos or insulation-materials statement - it neither confirms nor excludes asbestos aboard.

Consistent with 1944 Navy construction, era-typical asbestos applications for a diesel landing craft are exhaust/muffler lagging, machinery gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, and joiner/galley insulation materials.

- Limitations
- Era inference only - no source itemizes insulation materials for this class or hull, and no ship-specific asbestos documentation exists. Separately, NARA's catalog holds a digitized file unit 'LCI(L) 641 - Muster Rolls' (NAID 120196091, 119 images, first roll dated 30 September 1944) and the digitized cover/plate list of the class booklet plans 'LCI(L)-351-class Landing Craft' (NAID 155184249, 6 images, RG 19). Deck logs are not digitized for this hull - SL44 documents paper coverage only.
