- Finding
- The second Accentor was laid down as LCI(L)-652 on 10 June 1944 at Barber, N.J., by the New Jersey Shipbuilding Corp.; launched 13 July 1944; commissioned 19 July 1944. After shakedown she joined the Pacific Fleet and operated in various rear areas of the Pacific Ocean through the end of WWII, continuing similar activity into summer 1946. Placed out of commission 19 July 1946 and berthed with the Columbia River Group, Pacific Reserve Fleet. Redesignated LSI(L)-652 on 28 February 1949. Late in October 1950 nominated for conversion to an underwater mine locator ship; named Accentor and redesignated AMCU-15 on 7 March 1952; reassigned to the Bremerton Group in May 1952 in preparation for reconditioning. Never returned to active service; conversion canceled (DANFS: 22 January 1954). Name and AMCU-15 classification canceled 1 July 1954, reverting to LSI(L)-652. Struck from the Navy list 18 September 1956; sunk as a target 13 August 1958 about 70 miles off the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Spec line: dp. 387 (f.) (lim.); 159'0" x 23'8" x 5'8"; 14.4 k.; cpl. 40; 5 x 20mm; cl. LCI(L)-641.

- Limitations
- Authoritative service history; contains no asbestos, insulation, or hazardous-material information. Pacific service is described only as 'various rear areas' - no named operations or battle stars are documented for this hull. DANFS class label 'cl. LCI(L)-641' conflicts with the LCI(L)-351-class label other sources apply to the same contract group - class not asserted, see gaps. Conversion-cancellation date conflicts with NavSource spec block (24 Jan 1954) - see gaps. Archived page cited because the live NHHC URL returned 404 on 2026-09-30 (all URL patterns tried); a parallel session reported a newer NHHC search-index revision giving commissioned 25 July 1944 - unverified, see gaps.

An archive photograph (NH 86187, NHHC series) shows LCI(L)-652 with the Golden Gate bridge in the background, post-WWII. LCI class specification block: two sets of four General Motors 6051-71 diesel engines, 4 per shaft, 1,600 bhp, twin variable-pitch propellers - a diesel plant with no boilers; displacement 216 t. light / 234 t. landing / 389 t. loaded; length 158'5.5"; beam 23'3"; speed 16 kts. max; complement 23 with troop capacity of six officers and 182 enlisted; 2-inch plastic splinter protection on gun turrets, conning tower and pilot house; four single 20mm guns plus two .50-cal. machine guns added later. Page header labels the craft 'LCI(L)-641 Class Landing Craft Infantry (Large)/AMCU-7 Class Coastal Minesweeper (Underwater Locator)'.

- Finding
- HAER documents the consecutive sister hull LCI(L)-653 - built under the same contract (no. 1261, hulls 641-657, delivered July-August 1944) at the same yard as LCI(L)-652. Class construction details: 159' welded-steel hull, 387 long tons loaded; eight six-cylinder General Motors Series 71 diesel truck engines, four per shaft, with variable-pitch propellers; 2-inch plastic splinter protection described as crushed granite pebbles embedded in bitumen; complement 4 officers/24 sailors with troop capacity 9 officers/196 enlisted per the wartime guide. AMCU program documented: in 1952-53 the Navy converted twenty-five LCI(L)s to coastal underwater-locator minesweepers; only fifteen were actually recommissioned and an additional eight planned conversions were cancelled; sister LCI(L)-653 (renamed USS Avocet, AMCU-16) and nine sisters were converted at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard between July and December 1953. LCI(L)-653 was an 'LCI(L) 351-class' craft per the report's data sheet.

- LCI(L)-class crews; Puget Sound Naval Shipyard conversion workforce (1953)
- Limitations
- Documents the consecutive sister hull and the contract group (641-657) that included LCI(L)-652 - class/contract-level evidence, not a survey of this hull. The word 'asbestos' does not appear anywhere in the report (verified 2026-09-30, zero occurrences in extracted text); the splinter-protection material is described as granite pebbles in bitumen, with no asbestos stated, and the insulation mentions in the report describe the sister hull's post-Navy fishing-tender conversion, not wartime naval material. Yard history: New Jersey Shipbuilding was an assembly line for LCIs on Arthur Kill at Barber (later absorbed into Perth Amboy, now Maurer), incorporated 1942 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Barber Asphalt Corp.; management taken over by Todd Shipyards in 1942 at the Navy's request; about 2,500 workers produced 375 LCI(L)s (hull ranges 239-318, 423-657, 782-821, 866-884); the yard was dismantled after the war.

- Finding
- A welded-steel diesel-powered landing craft built June-July 1944 at New Jersey Shipbuilding Corp., Barber, NJ sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were engine-exhaust and muffler lagging, machinery thermal and acoustic insulation, gaskets, valve packing, deck coverings, accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings in the confined hull volume. As a diesel-powered craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and her '2-inch plastic splinter protection' armor is documented (HAER sister-hull record) as crushed granite pebbles in bitumen, not an asbestos product.

No quantity. The builder yard (New Jersey Shipbuilding, Barber NJ) has no located asbestos-specific documentation of its own - inference rests on era and Navy practice, not yard records. - No ship-specific asbestos record located: no survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material list, or deck-log-derived material evidence for this hull in any searched source. CourtListener authenticated sweep (cl-auth-search.py, 2026-09-30): at docket level every designation the hull carried - LCI(L)-652, LCI-652, LSI(L)-652/LSIL-652, AMCU-15/AMCU 15 - returned zero; at opinion level 'LSI(L)-652'/'LSIL-652' and 'AMCU-15'/'AMCU 15' returned zero while the 'LCI(L)-652'/'LCI-652' opinion query remained fleet-pacing-blocked after repeated attempts (see gaps). 'Accentor' returned 4 opinions and 5 dockets, all name collisions: the commercial tug Accentor's 1960-61 collision litigation (California Transport Corp. v. Tug Accentor, E.D. La. 1960; California Transport Corp. v. The Tug Accentor, Etc., 289 F.2d 822 (5th Cir. 1961)) plus two later E.D. La. opinions citing that line, and five unrelated dockets (individual bankruptcy, employment contract, corporate restructuring, Katrina Canal Breaches MDL, environmental/ESA). No qualifying asbestos litigation, and no litigation of any kind naming this hull, was located.
