    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation - its history section is sourced to the Turner Publishing USS LCI Vol. II (1995), not a primary registry; milestone dates are consistent with uboat.net, NavalCoverMuseum, and the Naval Marine Archive table. Decommission and strike dates are explicitly unknown in every located source. No asbestos content. No images of this hull exist in the NavSource archive.

    Finding
Special List 44 (by ship number) lists Navy logbook holdings for LCI(L)-677 covering 25 April 1944 through 30 June 1945 - NARA holds this hull's deck logs for the commissioning-through-June-1945 period.

    Limitations
Log-coverage endpoints are holdings boundaries, NOT commissioning/decommissioning dates - the 25 April 1944 begin date coincides with commissioning, but the 30 June 1945 end reflects SL44's 1801-1947 scope/cutoff, not decommissioning (the ship remained in service into 1946). Logs after June 1945 and any rough/smooth distinction are unresolved. The logs themselves are not digitized - physical records at NARA College Park (RG 24, Entry 118, NAID 581208 series).

    Finding
The DANFS entry for USS Lagarto (SS-371) names this hull in service context: approaching the Marianas with Haddock (SS-231), the submarines 'reached the Marianas on 4 February [1945]... Escorted in by the large infantry landing craft LCI(L)-677 on 5 February, Lagarto moored in a nest alongside Angler (SS-240) as she lay alongside Fulton (AS-11) in Tanapag Harbor' (Saipan).

    Limitations
Incidental mention in another vessel's DANFS entry - it documents LCI(L)-677 operating at Saipan on 5 February 1945 (escort/harbor duty), nothing more. No DANFS entry exists for LCI(L)-677 itself (unnamed numbered landing craft; candidate NHHC URL 404s). Archived copy cited because the live NHHC page returned 404 - the underlying text is the same DANFS narrative reproduced in secondary sources. No asbestos content.

First-person crew account for this hull: James Sigrist reported aboard USS LCI-677 at Norfolk, VA as diesel electrical engineer and supply officer after V-7 midshipman school and General Motors Institute marine-diesel training. Per the museum's interview description: the ship proceeded to San Diego for practice landings with the 4th Marines; was ordered to Pearl Harbor, ferrying liberty parties between Pearl Harbor and Maui for six months; transported the 204th General Hospital to Guam along with twenty-one other LCIs (interview dates this '1944'); encountered a typhoon at Saipan; was subjected to kamikaze attacks at Ulithi; and after the Japanese surrender was sent to Yap. Sigrist returned to the U.S. and was discharged in 1946.

    Limitations
Oral-history recollection recorded 2011 - first-person but uncorroborated detail. Internal date imprecision: '1944' for the Guam lift postdates a Norfolk-to-Pacific transit and six months of Maui liberty duty after an April 1944 commissioning, so late-1944/1945 is more consistent; the catalog dates are as stated in the interview. Does not establish campaign participation for award purposes (NavSource records no battle stars). No asbestos content.

    Limitations
Oral-history recollection; the command succession is unresolved - NavSource lists LT. C.F. Stroker, USNR in command as of May 1945, so Mahmarian's assumption of command was presumably later in 1945, but no muster or document confirms the sequence. Finding
The builder of this hull - George Lawley & Son, Neponset, MA - is documented as a yard that built 'dozens of World War II landing craft' and closed in 1946; the Mystic Seaport collection holds the yard's vessel records, cost sheets, scantlings, wage information, and time sheets - an archival lead for construction-era documentation on this hull.

    Limitations
Yard-level archival collection - the finding aid establishes that Lawley business records survive (vessel records, scantlings, time sheets) but the collection contents are not digitized and no hull-specific document was examined. Secondary literature further describes Lawley as the primary design yard for the LCI(L) program (drawings shared with nine other yards); that design-yard role is secondary-sourced and not asserted as a primary finding here. asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-powered LCI-351-class landing craft built April 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard asbestos applications aboard a small diesel landing craft of this type were engine-exhaust and machinery lagging, thermal insulation, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in the hull's confined spaces. As a diesel craft she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, but the confined-space exposure dynamic of a 158-foot, 28-man landing craft applies with full force.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming LCI(L)-677 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener returned zero results on every query run - "LCI(L)-677" (opinions and dockets), "LCI-677" (dockets), and "LCI 677" asbestos (opinions), all authenticated API v4 on 2026-09-30. A secondary web sweep surfaced only law-firm marketing content asserting asbestos aboard WWII landing ships generally without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy. Note: hull-number collision exists - USS LST-677 (later USS Yolo, APB-43) is a different vessel; searches were evaluated for this collision.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 combat landing craft sits squarely in the documented asbestos era. Deck logs (RG 24, SL44-listed coverage Apr 1944-Jun 1945), builder work records (Mystic Seaport Coll. 279), and any Guam disposal records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
