Decommissioned/stricken dates and post-1969 fate are unknown even to this source; the Argentina transfer year (1949) conflicts with the Lawley yard table's 1948 (see gaps). - The ship's own action report (CONFIDENTIAL, 18 April 1945, CO to CINC U.S. Fleet via Commander Task Unit 78.2.3 = Commander LCI(L) Flotilla 22) covers 0900 13 April - 1330 17 April 1945 under Victor Five Operation Plan No. 4-45: this vessel was part of Task Unit 78.2.3, Task Group 78.2, formed to 'transport, protect, land, and support the 24th Division, Infantry, X Corps, 8th Army in the Malabang-Parang-Cotabato area of Mindanao, P.I.' On 13 April she beached at Blue Beach, Mangarin Bay, Mindoro, embarking 170 enlisted men and 8 officers of the 19th Regimental Combat Team, 24th Infantry Division; sailed 14 April in convoy; on 16 April guard mail changed the objective from Blue Beach at Malabang to Green Beach at Parang; on 17 April entered Polloc Harbor, went to general quarters 1052, 'made dry beaching on Green Beach' at 1212, troops ashore by 1217, retracted 1220. 'All equipment functioned well. No ammunition was expended; no casualties experienced.' Signed G. A. Lundstrom, Lieut. USNR. Task organization lists 15 LCI(L)s under LCI Flot 22 (Commander Byrd) including 689.

- Finding
- Digitized quarterly muster rolls for this hull's crew survive at NARA: the forwarding sheet for the 30 June 1944 quarterly roll is certified by Executive Officer Ens. R. E. Carroll Jr., USNR, approved by Commanding Officer Lt.(jg) G. A. Lundstrom, USNR, forwarded 30 June 1944 via Fleet Post Office New York, with a handwritten service annotation 'Com. 5-29-44 to 6-1-46' (commissioned 29 May 1944 through 1 June 1946). Lundstrom's rank progression (Lt.(jg) June 1944 to Lieut. April 1945) is consistent with the action-report signature.

- Limitations
- Personnel documentation, not material documentation: the rolls name crew but contain no asbestos or material content. The '6-1-46' handwritten endpoint is unexplained by the file description (postwar China service ran to July 1946 per NavSource) - it plausibly marks the last roll in this file; the full 116-image set was not individually transcribed. Roster transcription is an open archival lead for crew-level exposure research.

- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 lists Navy logbook coverage for LCI(L)-689 running 29 May 1944 through 30 June 1945 (2 logbooks in the bound edition) - the logs themselves are held at the National Archives (RG 24). The coverage start coincides with her documented commissioning date; the coverage end is a logbook-holdings bound, not a decommissioning or striking date. The logs are not among the hull's digitized records in the NARA catalog (muster rolls and the action report are digitized; deck logs are not listed).

- Finding
- The Lawley yard production table records LCI(L) 689 as yard hull number 1490, type 'Landing Craft' (216d/158-ft series), delivered 29 May 1944, disposition 'To Argentina 1948 as BDI No 15/Q 68, scrapped 1969' - corroborating the NavSource construction/commissioning sequence and disposal chain, adding the builder's yard number, and independently dating the Argentina transfer to 1948 and the disposal to scrapping in 1969.

- Finding
- The Lawley Family Collection holds the business papers of George Lawley and Son (South Boston/Neponset yards) including vessel records, cost sheets, scantlings, owners, wage information, lists, time sheets, and petitions - the likeliest surviving archive of build and material documentation for the Neponset yard that built this hull (yard hull 1490). The collection history also confirms George Lawley & Son worked for the U.S. Navy from 1901 and operated at Neponset until its demise in 1945-46.

- Finding
- A firsthand veteran memoir of the LCI-family gunboat LCI(G)-77 records asbestos gloves kept at a 20mm gun mount as shipboard equipment: 'I got asbestos gloves from a 20 mm mount to use in picking up burning rockets rolling around in the fire and threw them over the side.' Documentary evidence that asbestos personal-protective equipment was carried aboard the WWII LCI type - the same craft family and 20mm armament fit as this hull (five single 20mm mounts).

- Locator
- HRD-80-2 letter text, 'Navy's Policy on Use of Asbestos' section
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented that asbestos thermal insulation was 'the Navy's major use of asbestos aboard ships,' that 'all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables,' and that product specifications for thermal insulation were not changed to asbestos-free until 1973 (elimination policy October 1975; some ships still delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978) - meaning every WWII-era hull, including this 1944 landing craft, was built decades before the substitution era.

- Program-level documentation; supports era context only, not any fact specific to this hull - HRD-80-2 surveyed Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards and 1970s-construction hulls, not WWII landing craft. A diesel-powered LCI had far less insulation scope than steam combatants; the report does not segment by vessel type. - Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, build-material list, or litigation naming LCI(L)-689 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener was queried this session through the authenticated helper - all searches returned zero results (opinion: 'LCI-689', 'LCI(L)-689', 'LCI 689'; docket: 'LCI-689' and a combined OR query across name variants) - a verified negative for the index, not a blocked repository. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; 'asbestos aboard' material exists only in law-firm marketing content (asbestos-ships.com landing-craft page, mesowatch.com Lawley yard page - banned source class asserting asbestos without primary sourcing), plus a hull-number collision with USS Wadleigh (DD-689) marketing pages.
