NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation - the history section is credited to the Turner Publishing LCI book, not a primary registry; milestone dates corroborated by uboat.net and (for commissioning) by NARA log-coverage start. Finding
NARA holds deck logs for this hull indexed as LCI(L)-690, coverage 6/1/1944 - 6/30/1945. The coverage window opens the day after the documented commissioning date (31 May 1944), independently corroborating that milestone; it ends mid-service (the ship was active through at least December 1945 on documented occupation duty) - post-June-1945 logs are not in this index.

Index entry only - documents that logs exist and their date coverage, not their contents. The logs themselves are not digitized (RG 24, NARA College Park); no deck-log text was consulted for this record. These are log-coverage dates, not commissioning/decommissioning dates in themselves - the 6/30/1945 end date marks the limit of indexed holdings, not the end of service.

The official awards manual names this hull in its ship-level credit table: 'LCI 690: 17 Apr 45 - 23 Apr 45' under operation code P39-3 - Mindanao Island landings (including Zamboanga, Malabang-Parang-Cotabato, Davao Gulf, Digos-Santa Cruz-Taloma Bay-Luayon-Cape San Augustin, Macajalar Bay, Sarangani Bay-Balut Island), itself a component of P39 'Consolidation of the Southern Philippines' (28 Feb - 20 Jul 45). Finding
The official Navy salvage history quotes the Salvage and Rescue Group report (Commander Task Group 77.8, CDR Byron S. Huie Jr. USNR) at the MIKE ONE operation, Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, for a ten-day period including: '10 January 1945 - ... Chowanoc retracted LST-567 hard aground and in danger of broaching. Apache placed pumps aboard APD 10. . . . LCI-690 retrieved a broached barge. . . . War Hawk (AP 168) was severely damaged during the night by a small enemy craft apparently carrying a torpedo.' The hull is documented performing combat salvage work at Lingayen Gulf on 10 January 1945 - consistent with her Navy Unit Commendation for Salvage, Fire Fighting, and Rescue Unit service (see ev-01).

    Finding
The flotilla memoir names this hull in three operational contexts: (1) ship roster of Flotilla 22 (36 ships, Groups 64/65/66, formed August 1944 from old Flotilla 5); (2) 21 February 1945 - 'Commander Flotilla 22 in 618 with 433, 518, and 690 escorting 60 LCM's, 20 LCVP's and "J" boats of the 594th Engineer Special Brigade and 3 Army Tug Boats and 10 LCT's, proceeded to Subic Bay, Luzon,' where the flotilla based operations for 22 further combat landings (Legaspi 1 Apr, Parang Mindanao 17 Apr landing the 24th Infantry Division, Zamboanga 11 May, Basilan 13 May, among others); (3) 10 October 1945 - 'The Flag was transferred from the 618 to the 690 under the Command of Commander Philip Porter' at Jinsen, Korea, during occupation duty. The flotilla departed for the U.S. in December 1945 'where it was decommissioned in January 1946.'

    Finding
A diary kept aboard a sister LCI records this hull in a leadership position at the start of the Luzon invasion run: 30 December 1944, Sansapore - 'We are behind LCI 690, Flag ship of Squad 66. D day is 10 days. Pick other ships up at Leyte. We are going to attack Lozone [Luzon]... Biggest convoy ever in this part of the Pacific.' The entry places LCI(L)-690 as Group 66 flagship in the Sansapore-Leyte-Lingayen convoy on 30 December 1944 - a leadership role predating her documented 10 October 1945 elevation to flotilla flagship.

    Finding
A steel-hulled diesel-powered landing craft built in May 1944 at George Lawley & Sons, Neponset, MA sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small combatant of this type and period were engine-exhaust and muffler lagging, machinery thermal insulation, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in the confined hull volume. As a diesel-powered craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and her '2-inch plastic splinter protection' armor is not an asbestos product. Her flagship service (Group 66, then Flotilla 22) implies additional communications and staff spaces - more wired and insulated volume, same era materials environment.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation naming USS LCI(L)-690 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener exact-phrase searches for all designation variants returned zero: 'LCI(L)-690' (o: 0; r: 0), 'LCI-690' (o: 0; r: 0), 'LCI 690' (o: 0; r: 0); an unquoted 'LCI(L)-690' opinion query returned 646 fuzzy matches, all acronym collisions on 'LCI' (LCI International telecom, Louisiana Construction & Industry fund, etc.) with no ship-related hits on inspection. Secondary web sweep surfaced no asbestos claim of any kind for this hull - not even law-firm marketing listicles (a George Lawley & Sons asbestos page exists at mesowatch.org, a banned marketing source asserting era-typical yard exposure without primary sourcing - excluded, not evidence for this hull).

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull was built inside the Navy's asbestos era and was sold to unknown private hands in 1946, leaving no post-service material record and no surviving hull to survey. CourtListener coverage is complete for designation-string searches but cannot reach unindexed PACER filings or state-court complaints that never name the hull verbatim. Deck logs (NARA College Park, 1944-45 coverage verified) and any BuShips construction records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
