    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation - dates generally track official records but the page is not a primary registry; builder, completion date, and NDRF disposition are corroborated independently here by the shipbuilding-history build table (ev-02), and log coverage by SL44 (ev-03). Contains no asbestos or material content.

    Finding
Special List 44 (by ship number) lists Navy deck logs held by NARA for LCI(L)-692 covering 6/6/1944-6/30/1945 - i.e., logbook coverage running from her commissioning date through mid-1945 (log-coverage dates, not commissioning evidence).

    Population
    LCI(L)-692 crew (1944-45 logging window)
    Limitations
Archival lead: the list establishes that logs exist in NARA holdings for that window. A catalog search for digitized records naming this hull returned muster rolls and flotilla/group war diaries but no deck-log file unit titled for LCI(L)-692, so these logs were not located online - physical-holdings lead only. A deck log is an operational record, not a material survey; it would document location/moorage and noteworthy events, not insulation content.

    Finding
Digitized personnel and command records naming this hull or her parent commands are online in the National Archives catalog: a muster-roll file unit for LCI(L) 692 (crew rosters by reporting period), three LCI(L) Group 109 war diaries covering June, August, and September 1945 (Group 109 was this hull's assigned group per NavSource), and a Flotilla 37 war diary for August 1945 (catalog title 'COM LCI(G) FLOT 37').

    LCI(L)-692 crew (1944-46); Group 109 and Flotilla 37 staff
    Limitations
Catalog metadata and /id/ page status verified live (all five cited NAIDs return 200); page-image contents not individually reviewed, and image counts not pulled (catalog JSON proxy throttled during this session). Muster rolls and war diaries are personnel/operational records - no material or asbestos content. The flotilla war diary is titled 'LCI(G)' (gunboat designation) while NavSource records this hull as an LCI(L) in Flotilla 37 - flotilla-level record, not hull-specific. They are leads for building a crew roster and timeline, which this record does not do.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-powered landing craft built May-June 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type were diesel exhaust and muffler lagging, gaskets and valve packing in engine and piping systems, electrical insulation on wiring and in control panels, and thermal insulation in the confined machinery spaces. As a diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam ships does not apply.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation schedule, material list, builder's spec sheet, or work package located for LCI(L)-692. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution. George Lawley & Sons is not in the Atlas shipyards.json dataset, so no yard-level product list was attached.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1944) and US Navy service era.

    search_ledger rows sl-uss-lci-l-692-lcil692-01 through -11
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LCI(L)-692 was found in the public sources searched. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried when this record was drafted - the fleet pacing limiter returned 'budget momentarily spent' on each attempt (exit 2, paced ~114/hr shared across sessions); logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. The hull's 1947 transfer to Maritime Commission/NDRF custody and unknown final fate leave only a thin US-side abatement/scrapping documentation trail.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (pacing-blocked, not run). Undigitized deck logs (SL44 window 6/6/1944-6/30/1945), Lawley & Sons build records, and MARAD/NDRF disposal files are open leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
