Documented for this hull: LCI-351 Class Landing Craft Infantry (Large); laid down (printed as) 7 September 1944 at George Lawley & Sons, Neponset, MA - see correction row ev-09; launched 16 August 1944; commissioned USS LCI(L)-714, 29 September 1944. Assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during WWII; post-war occupation duty in the Far East 19 September-17 December 1945. Decommissioned, date unknown; struck from the Naval Register, date unknown; transferred to the War Assets Administration for disposal, 10 February 1948. Awards display: American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Medal with Asia clasp - no battle stars shown. Radio call sign NQGI. Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation - dates generally track official records but the page is not a primary registry; the printed laid-down date is internally inconsistent with launch and delivery dates (see ev-09). The un-starred ribbon display is NavSource's rendering; no battle-star award was found and none is claimed either way. Contains no asbestos or material content.

    vessel_history
    Finding
The build table lists: LCI(L) | hull 714 | Lawley & Sons, Neponset MA | delivered 29-Aug-44 | 'To DoS 1948' - corroborating the builder, yard location, and 1948 disposal year on the NavSource page, and supplying a delivery date (29 August 1944) one month before commissioning. Surrounding rows (700-716) are the same George Lawley & Sons/Neponset block: sisters include 713 (sold 1948, restored as a museum in Astoria OR), 715 (later LSIL-715, to France 1951, sunk in Vietnam 1954), 701/702/703/709/710 (later LSILs/AMCUs or foreign transfers), 704-708 (to NDRF or laid up).

Secondary reference table - corroboration of builder/delivery/disposition, not a primary contract record. 'To DoS 1948' is the compiler's notation, read as Department of State but unverified; NavSource names the War Assets Administration with a precise date (10 February 1948) - the two most likely describe steps in the same disposal chain (see gaps). Finding
A sister-yard ship's narrative names this hull in her post-shakedown transit: LCS(L)-18 was commissioned at the George Lawley Shipyard, Neponset, on 2 October 1944, shook down in Chesapeake Bay, and 'From 31 October to 4 November [1944] the 18 was enroute to Key West, Florida, in company with LCS 17 and LCI 714, with our Captain as Officer in Technical Command. Some logistics were completed in Key West, and at Coco Solo, Canal Zone.' - documenting LCI(L)-714, five weeks after commissioning at the same yard, in the Lambert's Point VA-to-Key West leg of the new-construction movement toward the Panama Canal and the Pacific.

    Finding
A veteran staff member's account names this hull in a Philippine convoy operation and assigns her flotilla: 'March 1st 1945, Commander Flotilla 22 in 618 with 518, 63 and 714 of Flotilla 24, USS Day (DE225) and USS JOY escorting 12 Liberty Ships and LST's 932, 592 and 593 into Manila Bay, Commander Flotilla 22 SOPA (Senior Officer Present Afloat). This was the first merchant shipping in Manila Bay since 1941.' The narrator's own unit - Flotilla 22 - operated out of Subic Bay and conducted 22 Philippine-area combat landings, including Legaspi (1 Apr), Parang Mindanao (17 Apr, landing the 24th Infantry Division), Zamboanga and Basilan; that tempo belongs to the flotillas narrated, not to hull 714 individually.

A University of Hawaii deep-submergence survey documents this hull's physical disposition: wreck of LCI(L)-714 located 14 March 2009 (HURL dive PV-725, crew Kerby/Knudsen/MacDonald) at 467 m depth off South Oahu; 'Lost: After 10 February 1948'; circumstance of loss '*Scuttled' and reason '*Redundant' (asterisks denote HURL's own approximations/speculations); 'Artifact Condition: Excellent condition, despite having been stripped down for scuttling. Numbers are still clearly visible on the stern side. The after gun tubs are present. The wheelhouse is present and fully intact... orientated W-NW and has dredge spoils on top of it.' The page includes survey mosaics, sidescan imagery, and a historic photo; artifact history restates the Lawley build and Asiatic-Pacific/occupation service.

    Limitations
Academic wreck-survey record - identification rests on hull numbers 'clearly visible on the stern' per HURL. 'Scuttled' and 'Redundant' are HURL's flagged speculations, not established facts; the precise date and agency of the sinking are not given. No asbestos or material-content survey was performed or claimed - the wreck's condition is described structurally only. The page's 'Built/Launched: 29 September 1944' field conflates the commissioning date. Data-download endpoint (ftp.soest.hawaii.edu) did not resolve this session.

Digitized personnel records naming this hull: 77 muster-roll images for LCI(L) 714 are online, with reporting dates running 29 September 1944 (the commissioning date) through 1 September 1946 - establishing that the hull remained a crewed unit at least into late 1946, while NavSource carries her decommissioning as 'date unknown.' Archival lead: the list establishes that logs exist in NARA holdings for that window. A catalog search of the digitized WWII deck-log file units (series NAID 594258, 'Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations') returned no file unit titled for this hull under any tested name form ('LCI(L) 714', 'LCI 714', 'LCIL 714', 'LCI(L)-714'), so these logs were not located online - physical-holdings lead only. Post-June-1945 coverage (through disposal) is not listed in SL44 at all. A deck log is an operational record, not a material survey.

CORRECTION: the LCI(L)-714 NavSource page prints 'Laid down, 7 September 1944' - a date that post-dates both the printed launch (16 August 1944) and the build-table delivery date (29 August 1944), which is impossible. Sister-ship data from the same yard shows a roughly nine-day laydown-to-launch rhythm (LCI(L)-713: 27 July to 5 August 1944), making '7 August 1944' the probable intended date - but the corrected value is not asserted; the printed date is carried only as a flagged error.

    Finding
A diesel-powered landing craft built August-September 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type were diesel exhaust and muffler lagging, gaskets and valve packing in engine and piping systems, electrical insulation on wiring and in control panels, and thermal insulation in the confined machinery spaces. As a diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam ships does not apply. Because the hull was stripped and scuttled rather than broken up or preserved, whatever era materials remained aboard at loss went down with the wreck - there is no scrapping-yard or museum phase in which abatement would have been documented.

CourtListener returned zero qualifying hits on the queries completed (opinions '"LCI-714" OR "LCIL-714"' = 0; dockets '"LCI(L)-714" OR "LCI-714"' = 0); the remaining opinion-query variant under the parenthesized form was pacing-blocked on repeated attempts - an open, partial search gap rather than a fully negative litigation result. The disposal path forecloses the usual documentation trail: the hull was stripped and scuttled off South Oahu, so no scrapping-contract, museum-hazmat, or demolition record can exist; no ship-specific asbestos documentation survives to be found.
