NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its dates track Navy records but are not independently verified here against primary documents; its stated source is the Turner Publishing LCI history, Vol. II (1995). Decommissioning and striking dates are unknown. Contains no asbestos or material content. French-service details (LSIL9030, mine strike at Son Thai-Binh) rest on this page and its captioned French-veteran photography; no French archival record was independently consulted.

    Limitations
A fleet-organization snapshot: establishes operational assignment and commanding officer on 1 May 1945 only - not a combat narrative and not an asbestos record. Carries no battle-star attribution; the document does not state where Division 17 was physically operating on that date.

Special List 44 (by Ship Numbers, PDF p. 28) lists deck-log coverage for this hull: 'LCI(L)-715 10/30/1944 6/30/1945' - NARA holds the vessel's deck logs from the 30 October 1944 commissioning through 30 June 1945, covering the shakedown/transit and the first eight months of Asiatic-Pacific service including the 1 May 1945 fleet-organization snapshot.

Crew of record in deck logs, Oct 1944-Jun 1945
    Limitations
Archival lead: the listing proves logbooks exist in NARA custody (RG 24), not their content - the logs are not digitized in this listing and were not reviewed. Coverage ends 30 June 1945; post-war, reserve-fleet, and LSIL-era logs (July 1945-January 1951) are later NARA accessions not enumerated in Special List 44.

Official Navy museum description of the type this hull belongs to: 'Navy-designed (LCI) craft were launched by the hundreds... The 157 foot craft could make speeds up to 14 knots, had a crew of 24 officers and men, and four 20mm guns for armament'; the same hull was modified into mortar, gunboat and rocket variants. The page's Bureau of Ships photography also documents George Lawley & Son Corp., Neponset, MA, as an LCI(L) builder (LCI(L)-691 stern view at the yard, June 1944) - corroborating the builder attribution for this hull.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-powered amphibious landing craft built September-October 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were thermal insulation and lagging on engines and exhaust trunks, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in the confined hull volume. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, but the small-craft confined-space exposure dynamic applies to whatever era insulation was installed.

GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire U.S. construction (1944) and U.S. service era (1944-c.1951).

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum record, or litigation naming USS LCI(L)-715 / LSIL-715 / RFS LSIL9030 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener was searched this session - all eight queries returned zero results: opinions for "LCI(L)-715", "LSIL-715", "LCI-715", "LCI 715" and RECAP dockets for the same four variants (2026-09-30) - a verified negative within those indexes, not merely an unexecuted search. No DANFS entry exists (numbered landing craft are outside DANFS coverage; letter-index and candidate URLs return no entry). Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case or asbestos documentation; the only 'asbestos' material touching this hull's builder (George Lawley & Sons) is law-firm marketing content (e.g., mesowatch.org yard page) asserting exposure without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. CourtListener name searches are a negative result within that repository's indexes - they do not exhaustively cover unindexed dockets, state-court filings, or settled claims. Deck logs (1944-45 run, per SL44) and any reserve-fleet or MDAP-transfer condition records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
