- Finding
- NavSource identifies this hull as an LCI-1-class landing craft built by Consolidated Steel Corporation, Orange, Texas; laid down 29 September 1942; launched 22 November 1942; commissioned USS LCI(L)-76 on 6 January 1943. During World War II she was assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater and participated in: the Sicilian occupation, 9 to 15 July 1943; Salerno landings, 9 to 21 September 1943; Anzio-Nettuno advanced landings, 21 to 22 January and 29 January to 13 February 1944; Elba and Pianosa landings, 17 June 1944; and the invasion of southern France, 15 August to 25 September 1944. Decommissioned in June 1951; laid up in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Green Cove Springs, FL; struck from the Naval Register, date unknown; final disposition, sunk as a target in 1956. USS LCI(L)-76 earned four battle stars for World War II service. A photograph caption places this hull among landing craft carrying Moroccan troops at Porto Vecchio, Corsica, bound for Elba on 16 June 1944, alongside LCI(L)-39, LCI(L)-237, and LCI(L)-221 (photo credit Ed Storey). The page attributes its history text to USS LCI 'Landing Craft Infantry', Vol. II (Turner Publishing Company, 1995).

- Population
- Builder yard trades (Consolidated Steel, Orange TX, 1942); crew and embarked troops (1943-51)
- Limitations
- NavSource is a specialist historical compilation, not the underlying Navy commissioning or disposal record; its chronology is carried as partially verified. The page lists five campaigns but states four battle stars, and reports no activity between 1945 and the June 1951 decommissioning - both noted in gaps. The Porto Vecchio caption reads 'Elbe,' an apparent typographical error for Elba given the listed Elba landings of 17 June 1944. None of this documents asbestos or individual exposure.

- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 lists deck-log coverage for LCI(L)-76 from 6 January 1943 through 30 June 1945.

- Study period
- 1943-01-06 to 1945-06-30
- Limitations
- The list identifies the span of Navy deck logs in the archive; its endpoints are not independently commissioning, redesignation, or decommissioning dates. The start date agrees with NavSource's commissioning date but is not an independent commissioning record; the 30 June 1945 end is the index's coverage boundary, not a decommissioning date. The index does not describe asbestos, insulation, or exposure.

- Finding
- The ShipbuildingHistory Consolidated Steel Orange yard table lists LCI(L) number 76 as a U.S. Navy landing craft of 260 tons, contract dated 3 June 1942, delivery February 1943, disposition 'Sunk as target 1956.' The keel-laid and launch cells for this row are blank.

- Population
- Consolidated Steel Orange construction trades (1942-43)
- Limitations
- Secondary specialist compilation drawn from builder lists; corroborates builder, contract date, delivery window, and target-sinking disposition, but leaves keel and launch cells blank and does not independently verify NavSource's dates. No asbestos content.

- Population
- Navy shipyard workers and fleet policy, not LCI(L)-76 personnel
- Limitations
- GAO studied Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards decades after this craft's wartime service and after its 1956 sinking. It does not name this hull, its builder, or its equipment and cannot establish asbestos aboard this craft. Direct fetch returned HTTP 403 for both the product page and the PDF on 2026-09-30; content confirmed through indexed web extraction of the GAO report PDF.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No hull-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, product identification, or exposure finding was located in the reviewed NARA list, NavSource hull entry, ShipbuildingHistory yard table, NHHC indexed material, or GAO report. Authenticated CourtListener searches returned zero opinion hits for exact 'LCI(L)-76' and zero docket hits for 'LCI(L)-76' OR 'LCI-76' OR 'LCI(L) 76'; a general web litigation sweep surfaced no qualifying case naming this hull.

- Limitations
- Limited public-source search; absence of a located record does not prove absence of asbestos or exposure. The CourtListener opinion index was swept only on the exact hull designation - opinion-side variant queries were pending when this finding was recorded because the authenticated fleet helper reported temporary shared pacing exhaustion; the docket index was swept on designation variants. Deck logs, builder records, and the 1956 target-sinking order are undigitized leads.
