Milestones cross-verified against NHHC photo NH 105657 and the ShipbuildingHistory yard list, which agree. Contains no asbestos or material content. Decommissioning date not given.

    Finding
NHHC's official catalog captions document this hull by name on two pages: NH 105657 - 'Beached in Buckner Bay, Okinawa, after Typhoon Louise ravaged that port in October 1945. Photographed in November 1945. Considered not worth salvaging because of the end of World War II, this ship was stricken from the Navy List in January 1946 and sold in November 1947.' NH 101691 carries the same caption with the photo dated circa late October 1945 (NHHC NH-101691 catalog page also verified live 2026-09-30: https://www.history.navy.mil/our-collections/photography/numerical-list-of-images/nhhc-series/nh-series/NH-101000/NH-101691.html).

    Finding
The builder's yard list records this hull as Commercial Iron Works yard hull 138, LCI(L) 763, delivered June 1944, disposition 'CTL 1945' (constructive total loss) - consistent with the October 1945 grounding documented by NHHC. The same page records that Commercial Iron Works was started November 1916 on a 30-acre site just south of the Ross Island Bridge, closed in 1946 after building 188 boats during WWII, and that the site was sold to Zidell Marine as a ship dismantling facility.

    Finding type
    environmental_record
    Finding
Oregon DEQ documents asbestos contamination at the site where this hull was built: the fact sheet describes the Zidell parcel (3121 SW Moody Ave, Portland - the former ironworks shipyard site sold to Zidell in 1946 per the yard-history record) as an 'ironworks shipyard before WWII' engaged in 'building, repair and salvage' during WWII, purchased by Zidell in 1946, with 336 ships dismantled over 30 years and waste used as site fill; lists asbestos among site contaminants; and records a 2010 upland-remediation asbestos-abatement project with certified workers, air monitoring, and bulk ACM disposal.

Zidell dismantling trades (1946-c.1976); remediation workers (2010)
    Limitations
Site-level environmental record, not a hull record: the asbestos is associated primarily with Zidell's post-war ship-dismantling operation (1946 onward) and general site fill, and does not demonstrate asbestos use during Commercial Iron Works' 1944 construction of this hull. The DEQ sheet does not name Commercial Iron Works; the linkage is the shared site, corroborated by the yard list's address (3121 SW Moody Ave).

GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships - thermal insulation was the Navy's major use of asbestos aboard ships - and that thermal-insulation specifications were not revised to specify asbestos-free materials until 1973, with asbestos materials still being installed as late as May 1978; spanning this hull's entire construction (1944) and service era (1944-45).

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A steel diesel-powered landing craft built in 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were engine exhaust lagging, machinery and pipe gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and the austere landing-craft fit implies less insulation than a fleet vessel, though confined engine-room volumes concentrate whatever insulation existed.

    Limitations
Era/type inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material schedule, or work package located for this hull, and no class-level materials schedule was located for the LCI-351 design. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LCI(L)-763 / LCI(R)-763 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener returned zero opinions (type=o) and zero RECAP dockets (type=r) for '"LCI-763" OR "LCI(L)-763" OR "LCI(R)-763"' on 2026-09-30 - a true negative on the primary identifiers; the looser variant query could not be run this session (fleet pacing budget spent; see search_ledger). Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard landing craft' material is law-firm marketing content (asbestos-ships.com) asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

Deck logs (RG 24) and any Commercial Iron Works build records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
