    Finding
NavSource identifies this hull as LCI-351-class: laid down 28 June 1944 at New Jersey Ship Building Corp., Barber, N.J.; launched 31 July 1944; commissioned USS LCI(L)-786 on 5 August 1944 (commanding-officer notation: 'LTjg. J. A. Harris USNR in command (May 1945)'; the commanding-officer table also lists LTjg. H. C. Reeder, USNR, from 31 July 1944, and LTjg. Martin Vincent Cornetta, USN, 1948). It records redesignation as Landing Craft (Flotilla Flagship) LC(FF)-786 on 20 January 1945; assignment to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater under LC(FF) Flotilla Twenty-Three (LCDR R. H. Brazeal), LC(FF) Group Sixty-Nine (LT T. T. Brooks), LC(FF) Division One Hundred Thirty-Seven; one battle star for the Okinawa Gunto operation (assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, 1 April-30 June 1945); Navy Occupation Service Medal and China Service Medal (extended) for 21 September 1945-26 January 1946; decommissioned, date unknown; struck from the Naval Register, date unknown; sold 7 December 1950; final disposition, fate unknown. International radio call sign NQXK. Specs: 246 t light / 264 t landing / 419 t loaded; 158 ft 5.5 in; beam 23 ft 3 in; 16 kts max; complement 4 officers/24 enlisted; troop capacity 6 officers/182 enlisted; propulsion two sets of four General Motors diesel engines, four per shaft, BHP 1,600, twin variable-pitch propellers.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-maintained secondary compilation, not a contemporaneous deck log, Navy Register entry, or conversion work package; its per-hull entry is the project's canonical reference but is itself credited to a reunion-volume secondary source (Turner Publishing 1995). The commanding-officer line is internally ambiguous ('in command (May 1945)' vs the CO table's Reeder from 31 July 1944) and is transcribed as printed. Decommissioning and striking dates are absent ('date unknown'). Contains no asbestos, material-content, abatement, survey, or individual-exposure evidence.

    Finding
The U.S. Navy's official vessel listing (Ships of the U.S. Navy, 1940-1945, Landing Ships and Craft - transcribed by HyperWar/ibiblio) carries LC(FF)-786 in the LC(FF) 'Landing Craft, Flotilla Flagships' hull table (commissioning column: 1943-44). The LC(FF) type entry describes the class as 'Converted from Landing Craft, Infantry (Large) - LCI(L) - to carry flag officers and crew,' with class specifications of 387 tons displacement, 160 ft length, 23 ft 3 in beam, 15.5 knots, 4x20mm armament, complement 3 officers/21 enlisted, and 8 GM diesel engines (4 per shaft) with twin variable-pitch screws.

LC(FF) conversion-yard trades; embarked flag staffs
    Limitations
The hull-table listing of LC(FF)-786 is ship-specific; the accompanying conversion description and specifications are class-level (all LC(FF)s shared the LCI(L)-to-flagship conversion pattern) and do not document this hull's individual conversion location, date, work scope, or materials. No asbestos content.

    Finding
NARA Special List 44 inventories deck logs for 'LCI(L)(FF)-786' from 5 August 1944 through 31 December 1945. The inventory therefore covers the commissioning date, the 20 January 1945 LC(FF) redesignation, the Okinawa Gunto campaign period (1 April-30 June 1945), and the opening months of the documented occupation/China-service window. The logs themselves are held in RG 24 (Bureau of Naval Personnel), accessible via Archives II reference.

  6. [6]National Park Service / Library of Congress, Historic American Engineering Record HAER AK-52, M/V Husky II (USS LCI(L)-653), LCI(L)-351-class written history and descriptive data; corroborated for this hull's engine specification by NavSource and the HyperWar LC(FF) class entry [haer]

    Finding
NPS/Library of Congress HAER documentation for sister LCI(L)-653 describes the LCI(L)-351 class as an ocean-going infantry landing craft, one of more than 900 built in World War II, with diesel engines driving twin screws. NavSource's LCI(L)-786 specification likewise lists two sets of four General Motors diesel engines (four per shaft) with twin variable-pitch propellers, and the HyperWar LC(FF) class entry confirms the flagship conversions retained the 8-GM-diesel plant. As built in mid-1944, this hull was an all-diesel amphibious craft: there is no boiler or steam plant, so the boiler/turbine-lagging pathway does not apply; era-typical asbestos applications aboard a 1944 steel landing craft of this type were diesel exhaust and muffler lagging, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, flange gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings and adhesives, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and brake linings on winches and windlass.

    Population
Construction trades (Barber NJ, 1944); LC(FF) conversion-yard trades (1944-45); crew (4 officers/24 enlisted class spec); embarked troops and flag staff
    Limitations
HAER AK-52 records sister LCI(L)-653, not this hull, and neither it, the NavSource specification block, nor the HyperWar class entry states that asbestos was installed, identifies a product, or identifies an exposure pathway aboard this hull. No ship-specific insulation schedule, survey, or build-spec asbestos callout was located. Diesel propulsion excludes no material category by itself; asbestos presence aboard this hull is era-consistent inference, not ship-proven. Does not establish quantity, specific products, or present-day presence (hull sold 1950, fate unknown).

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material list, maintenance/work package, or verified litigation naming USS LCI(L)-786 / LC(FF)-786 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). On CourtListener, the authenticated API v4 opinion searches '"USS LCI(L)-786"' and '"LCI(L)-786"' each completed with count=0; the remaining designation-variant and docket queries ('LC(FF)-786', 'LCFF-786', 'LCI-786') could not be sent because the fleet-wide pacing budget was momentarily spent, and were stood down per the helper's instruction - logged as incomplete coverage, not a no-result finding. No NHHC DANFS entry exists for this hull (404 on candidate URLs; numbered landing craft largely lack individual DANFS entries).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 naval build is era-consistent with asbestos use. CourtListener coverage is genuinely incomplete: two opinion queries completed (count=0 each); LC(FF)-designation variants and RECAP docket searches remain outstanding under fleet pacing stand-down, and unindexed PACER filings, state-court pleadings, and MDL claimant listings are never captured by that repository. Deck logs, conversion work packages, and any 1950 sale/disposal records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
