New Jersey Shipbuilding construction trades (1944); crew and embarked flotilla staff (1944-46; 4 officers + 24 enlisted ship's complement); embarked troops up to 188 in LCI(L) configuration
    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its history cites Turner Publishing's 1995 'USS LCI' Vol. II. Contains no asbestos content. The commanding-officer notation '(May 1945)' reflects the source's snapshot qualifier; the same officer is carried in the official 1 May 1945 NHHC organization (ev-02). The Flotilla 23 assignment is corroborated by NHHC, but the group/division numbers differ (69/138 here vs 68/136 in the NHHC document - variance carried in gaps). No battle star is credited - do not assert Okinawa or Iwo Jima participation from the flotilla assignment alone. Decommissioning, striking, and disposal dates are all unrecorded here.

    Finding
An official U.S. Navy fleet-organization document dated 1 May 1945 lists 'LCI 792' in LCI Flotilla Twenty-Three, LCI Group Sixty-Eight, LCI Division One Hundred Thirty-Six, Lt. (jg) E. N. Engstrom (USNR) shown as the commanding officer - placing this hull in the Pacific Fleet amphibious order of battle alongside division-mates LCI 789, 790, 791, 793, and 1083. The HyperWar Navy-compilation mirror 'Ships of the U.S. Navy, 1940-1945' lists LC(FF)-792 within the LC(FF)-788-793 entry among the flotilla-flagship conversions (built 1943-44) and describes the type as 'converted from Landing Craft, Infantry (Large) - LCI(L) - to carry flag officers and crew', corroborating the (FF) designation.

Crew and embarked flotilla staff (1945)
    Limitations
Ship-specific organizational placement only; no asbestos or material content. The NHHC document's group/division (68/136) differs from NavSource's assignment line (Group 69/Division 138) - same flotilla (23), different group/division numbers; unresolved, carried in gaps. The NHHC listing prints 'LCI 792' without an '(FF)' flag marker although NavSource dates the LC(FF) redesignation 20 January 1945 - three-plus months before the org snapshot; flag-marker annotation in this table is inconsistent (division-mate hulls elsewhere in the flotilla carry (FF) and (GF) markers) and is noted, not resolved. Order-of-battle placement is not proof of presence at any specific assault landing.

NARA holds deck logs for this hull indexed as 'LCI(L)(FF)-792' covering 16 August 1944 - 30 June 1945 in RG 24 logbook holdings - the commissioning date through the flotilla-flagship period and the end of the war. The hull does not appear on NARA's 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' online list - the WWII-era LCI logs are undigitized; textual reference at College Park is the access path.

    Limitations
Holdings-level finding only: establishes that logs exist and their coverage window, not their content - no page was reviewed this session. Log coverage endpoints are not commissioning/decommissioning claims (though the 16 August 1944 start coincides exactly with the documented commissioning date). Absence from the online list means no digitized scans were located; does not bear on the physical holding. Coverage after 30 June 1945 is unverified.

    Finding
The New Jersey Shipbuilding yard page describes an assembly-line LCI yard on the Arthur Kill at Barber (a community absorbed into Perth Amboy and now called Maurer), managed by Todd Shipyards from 1942 at the Navy's request, and closed after the war. Its build table records 'LCI(L) 792, US Navy, Landing Craft, Aug-44' with disposition 'Struck 1957'; the compiler's LCI(L) index table lists the hull as 'LCI(L) FF 792, New Jersey SB, Barber NJ, 16-Aug-44' with disposition 'Laid up 1946' - both corroborating the build and the (FF) designation.

Secondary compilation consistent with NavSource on build/commissioning. The 'Struck 1957' disposition in the yard table conflicts with NavSource's 'date unknown' and is carried as a striking-date variance in gaps; 'Laid up 1946' is consistent with NavSource's March 1946 Pacific Reserve Fleet layup. Finding type

    Finding
Era inference built on government documentation of this hull's class and builder: HAER AK-52 documents sister hull LCI(L)-653, built at the same yard - New Jersey Shipbuilding, Barber NJ, an assembly-line LCI builder (about 2,500 workers; 375 LCI(L)s delivered) - and explicitly lists the yard's production blocks as LCI(L)s 239-318, 423-657, 782-821, and 866-884, placing hull 792 inside the documented 782-821 block. The class record describes all-welded steel construction, eight six-cylinder General Motors Series 71 diesel truck engines (four per shaft) driving twin variable-pitch propellers, 16-knot maximum speed, 4-officer/24-enlisted complement, and late-design hulls built after 1 June 1944 with centerline ramps and bow doors (792 was laid down 7 July 1944). HAER notes about a third of LCIs were converted to specialist roles including flotilla flagships (LCI(FF)). A 1944-built diesel-powered landing craft sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos era and the wartime emergency-shipbuilding program; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type were diesel-exhaust lagging and silencer insulation, machinery-space thermal insulation, gaskets and valve/flange packing, electrical cable and switchboard insulation, refrigeration/galley insulation, and winch/windlass brake linings. The pre-January-1945 conversion to flotilla flagship - refitting troop compartments as offices and adding radio/communications spaces for the embarked staff - would have disturbed original insulation and installed current-spec materials wherever the conversion was performed, an exposure pathway for conversion-yard trades independent of crew exposure. Diesel propulsion means no boiler or turbine lagging pathway.

New Jersey Shipbuilding construction trades (1944); LC(FF) conversion workforce (1944-45, location undocumented); crew and embarked flotilla staff (1944-46); reserve-fleet/disposal workforce post-1946
    Limitations
Class/era inference only - HAER AK-52 records sister LCI(L)-653, not LCI(L)-792, and the document contains no asbestos, insulation-material, or fiber-content finding of any kind (its only insulation reference is post-Navy civilian spray-on insulation in a refrigerated-hold conversion). No hull-specific insulation survey, conversion work package, or material list was located for this hull; the LC(FF) conversion location is undocumented. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution. Asbestos presence aboard is unproven; nothing here establishes individual exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, conversion work package, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming LCI(L)-792 / LC(FF)-792 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion index returned zero hits for 'LCI(L)-792', 'LC(FF)-792', and 'LCI-792' - a genuine negative result in the opinion index; the 'LCI 792' opinion variant and the RECAP/docket index query could not be completed this session (fleet-wide pacing stand-downs) and are logged as open gaps, not results. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material pattern is law-firm marketing content (generic landing-craft listicles asserting asbestos without primary sourcing) - excluded by source policy. No asbestos litigation naming the builder yard (New Jersey Shipbuilding) was located either; the EPA RCRA Environmental Indicator document for the Chevron Perth Amboy facility on the yard site contains no asbestos finding.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull was built and converted inside the documented Navy asbestos era. The litigation repository search is partially open (one opinion variant and the docket index unqueried due to fleet pacing). Deck logs (SL-44 holding, undigitized) and any conversion work package are unreviewed leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
