    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation whose LCI histories derive from the Turner Publishing volume and veterans' submissions - milestone data generally track official sources but NavSource is not a primary registry. The 'decommissioned, date unknown' and 'fate unknown' entries are honest absences, not records. Contains no asbestos or material content. None of the prose here asserts asbestos aboard this hull.

    Finding
The official 1 May 1945 Pacific Fleet organization lists 'LCI 814' - 'Lt. (jg) J. Grantham, Jr. (USNR)' - in LCI Division One Hundred Twelve under LCI Group Fifty-Six (ComLCIGrp 56: Lt. (jg) C. M. Reese, USNR) within LCI Flotilla Nineteen (Commander LCI Flotilla Nineteen: Lt. Cdr. E. C. Folger, Jr.), in the amphibious forces section of the Pacific Fleet organization. This places the ship in the Pacific Fleet order of battle during the Okinawa Gunto operation window (28 April - 30 June 1945) documented by NavSource.

DANFS Baretta service narrative, paragraph covering 16-18 September 1945 at Wakanoura Wan
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The DANFS entry for the net layer Baretta (AN-41) places LCI-814 in the Wakayama occupation-sweep anchorage during the typhoon of 17-18 September 1945: on the evening of 17 September, as the approaching typhoon raised winds to force 6, 'infantry landing craft LCI-814' dragged anchor and 'fouled the net layer's bow a little less than an hour' after 1800; Baretta 'backed down and veered chain to 90 fathoms, enabling the landing craft to free herself.' During the night 'continually dragging' motor minesweepers and infantry landing craft surrounded Baretta in Wakanoura Wan; winds were clocked at 81-89 knots early on the 18th. Consistent with -814's documented September 1945 minesweeping-operations service in the Shikoku/Kii Suido area.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The official awards manual lists this hull twice among ships eligible for Asiatic-Pacific campaign engagement stars: 'LCI(L) 814: 28 Apr 45 - 30 Jun 45' under operation code P34-1 (Okinawa Gunto operation) and 'LCI 814: 8 Sep 45 - 16 Sep 45' (P207-6) plus '1 Oct 45 - 25 Oct 45' (P207-3) under Minesweeping Operations Pacific. These official eligibility lines corroborate NavSource's two-battle-star campaign record: the Okinawa assault-and-occupation window and post-surrender minesweeping support off Shikoku/Kii Suido and at Nagoya.

    Finding
Official NHHC description of the LCI(L) type: 'Navy-designed (LCI) craft were launched by the hundreds. On the first version soldiers debarked by means of catwalks and ramps, but the later ones eliminated the ramps and used bow doors instead... The 157 foot craft could make speeds up to 14 knots, had a crew of 24 officers and men, and four 20mm guns for armament.' LCI(L)-814 belongs to the later LCI-351 (round conning tower, bow ramp/doors) production type consistent with this class description.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The Coast Guard Historian documents the LCI(L) type's Pacific employment pattern: LCIs 'carried out a myriad of duties... These included: minesweeping, serving as ferries for passengers and mail, made smoke..., fought off kamikaze attacks..., laid buoys...', and 'worked in Japanese waters after the end of the war, visiting various Japanese ports' before returning to the U.S. in late 1945 and early 1946 for decommissioning. This matches -814's documented post-surrender minesweeping operations at Kochi-Shikoku and Nagoya. LCI(L)-814 is NOT among the 28 Coast Guard-manned hulls listed - she was Navy-manned (USNR officers).

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A steel-hulled landing craft built in 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard asbestos-relevant applications aboard a diesel small combatant of this type and period were engine and exhaust lagging in the machinery space, gaskets, valve and pump packing, electrical insulation, and interior finishing materials. As a diesel-powered craft she carried no boilers or steam lines - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of larger combatants does not apply, and the ship's small size (158 ft, 28-man crew) bounds the plausible installed scope accordingly.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for LCI(L)-814. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. No manufacturer attribution for this hull. The small size and diesel plant of this craft mean any era-consistent asbestos scope is materially smaller than for steam combatants.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming LCI(L)-814 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener (opinions and dockets) returned no qualifying hit: the single docket text-match for 'LCI-814' is Moultrie v. Reynolds, 9:15-cv-00198 (D.S.C. 2015), a habeas petition from Lee Correctional Institution ('LCI') - a name collision, unrelated to the vessel and not asbestos litigation. No law-firm or marketing page asserting asbestos aboard this hull was located either.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull was built inside the Navy's documented asbestos era. Deck logs (NARA RG 24), NJSB work records, and the Maritime Commission disposal/status-card file are undigitized or unfetched leads; final fate after the 1948 transfer is unrecorded in public sources. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
