    Finding
NavSource identifies one hull as Magpie (MHC-29), ex-Magpie (AMCU-29), ex-USS LCI(L)-944. It records Consolidated Steel Corp., Ltd., Orange, Texas, as builder; laying down on 15 January 1944; launching on 10 February 1944; and commissioning USS LCI(L)-944 on 14 April 1944. It records naming and reclassification as Magpie (AMCU-29) on 7 March 1952, conversion at Charleston Naval Shipyard beginning 15 October 1953 and completing 15 April 1954, reclassification MHC-29 on 1 February 1955, and says Magpie was never commissioned. The page also lists sale on 18 May 1960, striking on 1 January 1961, later sale to Tropicana Products Co. of La Ceiba, Honduras as Abaco Trader, service in 1981, and fate unknown.

    Population
Crew (wartime LCI service); Charleston Naval Shipyard conversion trades (1953-54); later commercial crew
    Limitations
Volunteer-maintained photographic/historical archive, verified live on the required navsource.net domain. The page contains an embedded DANFS summary that conflicts with its timeline by saying Magpie served in the Panama Canal Zone and decommissioned in January 1954, although the timeline says the AMCU conversion was completed in April 1954 and Magpie was never commissioned. This row reports the conflict and does not resolve later service. It contains no asbestos information and establishes neither asbestos presence nor exposure.

    Finding
    NARA's Special List 44 indexes deck logs for LCI(L)-944 from 15 April 1944 through 31 December 1945.

    Limitations
The index establishes that deck-log records are held for the stated dates, not the contents of those logs. It does not itself establish commissioning, materials aboard, asbestos presence, or exposure.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA states that asbestos in U.S. Navy materiel from 1941 through 1961 requires complex research and directs vessel-specific research to Bureau of Ships Record Group 19 correspondence filed by hull designation, class, and shipyard, plus Amphibious Vessel and Minesweeper/Minelayer General Information Books. The guide supplies leads for LCI(L)-944 / AMCU-29 / MHC-29 and the Consolidated Steel and Charleston Naval Shipyard periods.

    Limitations
This is a research guide, not evidence that asbestos was aboard this hull. The relevant RG 19 correspondence, General Information Books, conversion work package, and material records were not retrieved; no ship-specific asbestos conclusion can be drawn.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos product, survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, material list, or qualifying litigation record was located in the completed public-source searches for LCI(L)-944 or its Magpie aliases.

    Limitations
This is a bounded search result, not proof that asbestos was absent. The required CourtListener exact-name and hull-number opinion/docket sweep could not be completed: the authenticated fleet helper twice reported that the shared pacing budget was spent before returning search results. It is logged as blocked, not counted as a CourtListener no-result. NARA archival leads remain unreviewed.

  6. [6]NavSource Magpie (MHC-29) page: timeline versus embedded DANFS history [other_primary]
    Locator
NavSource page header, timeline, and embedded DANFS paragraph
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The record consolidates Magpie (AMCU-29/MHC-29) with LCI(L)-944 as one hull. NavSource's page-level timeline says Magpie was never commissioned, while an embedded DANFS summary says the vessel served off the Panama Canal Zone until decommissioning in January 1954. The accounts cannot both be accepted as a single later-service chronology.

    Limitations
Identity consolidation is supported by the page header and NavSource's LCI and mine-warfare indexes. Later Magpie operational status and decommissioning are unresolved; this correction does not establish asbestos presence, work scope, or exposure.
