    Consolidated Steel construction trades (Feb-Apr 1944); ship's crew 1944-1946 (24 as LCI(L), 70 as LCI(G) complement); embarked troops (up to 6 officers + 182 enlisted per landing)
    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates track NVR/BuShips practice and are cross-confirmed here by uboat.net, but no primary register page exists for this hull (DANFS has no entry; NVR excludes pre-1987 disposals). Contains no asbestos or material content. The page's stated history source (Turner Publishing LCI volume) is itself a secondary work.

    Finding
DANFS documents this hull by name in the Yakutat (AVP-32) entry: 'Reaching Port Townsend, Wash., on 6 December [1945], Yakutat transferred all passengers to LCI-957 for further transportation' - placing the craft at Port Townsend, Washington, on 6 December 1945 ferrying returning personnel, consistent with the designation reversion to LCI(L)-957 on 10 September 1945.

    Limitations
Ship-specific presence/service fact only; no asbestos or material content. This is the only DANFS reference located for this hull - numbered landing craft do not receive their own DANFS entries (dedicated NHHC page for LCI-957 returns 404, verified 2026-09-30).

    Finding
uboat.net's warship record cross-confirms: class LCI 351; built by Consolidated Steel Corp., Ltd., Orange, Texas; laid down 14 February 1944; launched 10 March 1944; commissioned 5 April 1944; 'Reclassified as LCI(G), Landing Craft Guns on 15 June 1944.' Its order-of-battle reconstruction of Operation Globetrotter (Cape Sansapor, 30 July 1944) places this hull in Task Unit 77.2.5 (LCI Unit), Task Force 77, under commanding officer Lt.(jg) J.F. Hartmann, Jr., USNR, as a unit of LCI Flotilla 8 (COMLCIFLOT 8 embarked in LCI(L)-546); landing operations east of Cape Sansapor and on Middelburg and Amsterdam Islands commenced 0700 30 July 1944 with no enemy opposition.

    Limitations
uboat.net is a secondary compilation (compiled from official action reports and reference works), not a primary registry - used for corroboration and operational detail. No asbestos or material content. Names the wartime CO at Sansapor; NavSource's CO table covers only the final period (Sept-Dec 1946) - the two are complementary, not conflicting.

    Finding
Contemporaneous photographs document this hull (a) landing 6th Division troops on the beach at Sansapor, New Guinea, 30 July 1944, alongside LCI(L)-519; and (b) in Drydock #3 at the Navy Yard, Long Beach, California, in September 1945, alongside LCI(L)-955, LCI(L)-956, and nine other LCIs - the latter a US Navy photograph published in the yard newspaper 'Drydock Digest' dated 12 September 1945. The drydock image is presence documentation at a naval shipyard and an archival lead for any September-1945 availability work.

    Limitations
Photographs establish physical presence, not work performed: a drydock photo is not an availability, overhaul, or material record - no work package or task description was located for the Long Beach docking. The Sansapor caption date (30 July 1944) reflects the actual landing day; official campaign credit is 31 July - 1 August 1944 (see ev-08). No asbestos content.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
A steel-hulled landing craft built February-April 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel amphibious craft of this period were engine and exhaust insulation in the machinery space, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and insulation board in accommodation spaces. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, but the small-ship confined engineering-space dynamic applies.

Consolidated Steel construction trades (1944); crew (1944-1946); any yard trades during the September 1945 Long Beach docking
    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for LCI(L)-957/LCI(G)-957. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. The 2-inch 'plastic splinter protection' listed in the spec block is undocumented as to composition - no source states whether it contained asbestos (see gaps).

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction and service era (1944-1946) plus her 1948 disposal. The review's fieldwork yards were the Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards - the former being the yard where this hull sat in Drydock #3 in September 1945 (a coincidence of venue; the report contains no vessel-specific finding).

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LCI(L)-957 / LCI(G)-957 / LCI-957 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener returned zero results on both the opinion index and the RECAP docket index for all designation variants - a verified negative this session, not a throttle event (see search_ledger). The Maritime Commission transfer (19 January 1948) and unknown final fate mean no scrapping or disposal material record exists in located sources.

RECONCILIATION: the Cape Sansapor landing in which this hull participated occurred 30 July 1944 (uboat.net chronology: '0700K/30, Task Force 77... commenced landing operations east of Cape Sansapor and on Middelburg and Amsterdam Islands'; NavSource photo caption: 'landing 6th Division troops on the beach at Sansapor... 30 July 1944'), while the official Asiatic-Pacific campaign credit window listed by NavSource is 31 July - 1 August 1944. Both statements are carried - the landing day and the credit window - not conflated. Separately, NavSource's drydock-photo caption names 'USS LCI(L)-960' but links to archive slot 150969 (which corresponds to LCI(L)-969) - which hull was actually present is unresolved.
