    Finding
NavSource records that LCS(L)(3)-108 received Navy occupation service from 2 September to 7 December 1945 and China service from 8 December 1945 to 8 April 1946 and 10 to 15 April 1946. It records decommissioning on 12 August 1946, lay-up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, redesignation as USS LSSL-108 on 28 February 1949, strike date unknown, and sale on 16 March 1951 to The Learner Co., Alameda, California. The page then records civilian registration as fishing boat Gull in 1954, freight barge Gull in 1957, later registrations through 1986, out of documentation in 1991, and final disposition unknown.

Navy occupation and China-service crew (1945-1946); civilian operators after 1951
    Limitations
The source expressly leaves the strike date and final disposition unknown. It documents administrative and registration milestones, not post-sale condition, asbestos presence, abatement, or exposure.

    Finding
GAO's 1979 review states that it reviewed use of asbestos in Navy ships and Navy efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards. The review describes the Navy's 1975 policy of removing and replacing with nonasbestos material only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for repairs, and its 1979 modification to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas.

    Limitations
Navy-wide and shipyard-program context only. GAO did not name LCS(L)(3)-108, Commercial Iron Works, or any material aboard this hull; it cannot establish asbestos presence, location, quantity, exposure, or legal eligibility for this vessel.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or product record was located in the completed public-source review. The authenticated CourtListener litigation sweep remains incomplete: a saved LSSL-108 docket search returned zero results, but its opinion search was blocked by the fleet-wide pacing budget, and the streamed exact-name and LCS(L)(3)-108 requests were not retained after terminal-session timeout. This is a research gap, not a no-result conclusion for the name or hull-number searches.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard or absence of exposure. The zero-result LSSL-108 docket response is limited to that alias and search type. CourtListener remains an unresolved litigation gap because the required opinion search was fleet-paced and exact-query responses were not retained; no anonymous, raw, or v3 request was made.

    Finding type

    Finding
NARA's Guide to Federal Records identifies Record Group 19, Records of the Bureau of Ships, as covering 1794-1972 and states that the Bureau supervised design, construction, procurement, maintenance, and repair of Navy ships and craft. The guide identifies Shipbuilding Division records and the record group as an archival lead for construction, machinery, material, and repair documentation relevant to this 1945 vessel.

    Limitations
This guide describes archival holdings generally and does not identify a file for LCS(L)(3)-108. No RG 19 ship-specific construction, material, or repair record was retrieved; it is an archival lead only.

    Finding
NavSource identifies this hull as USS LCS(L)(3)-108, later USS LSSL-108. It records her as laid down 17 February 1945 at Commercial Iron Works, Portland, Oregon; launched 10 March 1945; and commissioned 22 March 1945 under Lt. R. E. Hone, USNR. The specifications give a complement of 6 officers and 65 enlisted and a diesel plant of two General Motors 6051 series 71 engines (1,600 bhp), single General Motors reduction gears, two diesel-drive 60 kW 450 V AC ships-service generators, and twin variable-pitch propellers.

    Limitations
This is a ship-history and specifications record, not a material list or exposure record. It identifies diesel machinery but does not identify insulation, packing, gaskets, or any asbestos-containing material aboard the hull.
