    Finding
The hull was laid down 22 October 1944 at George Lawley & Sons Corp., Neponset, Massachusetts; launched 30 October 1944; commissioned USS LCS(L)(3)-116 on 17 November 1944; served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater with LCS(L)(3) Flotilla Four, Group Ten, and Division Nineteen; and participated in the Okinawa Gunto operation. NavSource records decommissioning in 1946, redesignation as USS LSSL-116 on 28 February 1949, transfer to Japan on 30 May 1953 as JDS Yamabuki, return to U.S. custody on 31 March 1959, striking from the Naval Register in 1966, and final disposition as unknown.

    Limitations
NavSource is a photo archive and states that no history is available for this hull; the page documents the listed dates and designations but does not document asbestos, a full service chronology, or the post-1966 fate beyond 'unknown.'

    Finding
NavSource lists this hull at 250 tons light displacement and 158 feet overall, with a complement of 6 officers and 65 enlisted. Its propulsion was two General Motors 6051 Series 71 diesel engines, a General Motors main reduction gear, two diesel-drive 60-kW 450-V AC ship-service generators, and twin variable-pitch propellers. A National Archives and Records Administration photograph caption on the same hull page states that the vessel was on Radar Picket Station #1 on 16 April 1945 when a kamikaze hit her, killing 12 and wounding 12.

    Limitations
These are the specifications and caption reproduced by NavSource; they do not establish asbestos content, the location of any insulation, or exposure to any crew member. The page does not provide a damage report or casualty roster.

    Finding type

    Finding
NARA identifies Navy engineering drawings and specifications relevant to ship-specific asbestos research, including Record Group 19 hull drawings and S39 'Insulation and Lagging' and S48 'Piping' material groups. These records are an archival lead for LCS(L)(3)-116, not evidence that asbestos was aboard this hull.

    Limitations
This research guide does not name LCS(L)(3)-116 and does not establish any product, quantity, location, condition, or exposure aboard it. The hull-specific RG 19 drawings were not retrieved in this batch.

GAO product page highlights, 'use of asbestos in Navy ships' and replacement policy
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
GAO reviewed Navy ship asbestos use, removal costs, and worker-protection policy, describing asbestos insulation in Navy ships and a 1979 policy of selectively replacing damaged or repair-obstructing asbestos insulation. This establishes Navy-wide era context relevant to a 1944-built vessel but does not identify LCS(L)(3)-116.

    Population
Navy shipyard workers and Navy ships in the GAO review
    Limitations
Program-level evidence only: GAO's review concerned Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards and does not document this hull, its builder, its materials, or any person's exposure. No ship-specific asbestos conclusion is drawn.

    Locator
NavSource hull page states no history is available; NARA RG 19 asbestos research guide identifies unreviewed hull drawings as the next archival lead
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or asbestos product identification was located in the authoritative vessel and archival-source sweep completed for LCS(L)(3)-116 / LSSL-116. Ship-specific asbestos documentation is therefore unknown, not presumed absent.

    Ship-specific public records
    Limitations
A negative research result is not proof that no asbestos-containing material existed aboard. NARA hull drawings and other non-digitized records may contain responsive material; this batch did not retrieve them. CourtListener exact-name and hull-number searches were attempted through the authenticated helper but did not return usable payloads within the fleet limiter's guarded wait and are recorded separately as blocked.
