George Lawley & Sons construction trades (1944); wartime crew (design complement 6 officers + 65 enlisted); JMSDF crew 1953-58
    Limitations
NavSource documents identity, milestones, service narrative, and published specifications - it contains no materials or asbestos information and does not address exposure. Armament on this page's spec block reads 'one single 40mm gun mount' at the bow; sister-hull pages (e.g., LCS(L)(3)-50) list a 3"/50 dual-purpose bow gun - configuration varied and the discrepancy is carried in gaps rather than resolved.

    Finding
The commanding officer's own narrative for this hull: commissioned as flagship of LCS(L) Group Eight at George Lawley Shipbuilding Company, Neponset, MA, 17 September 1944; departed Boston 25 September for Solomons, MD; shakedown and post-shakedown availability in the Chesapeake Bay area; departed Norfolk 21 October for Coco Solo, CZ (arrived 31 October); transited the Panama Canal 3 November; San Diego 14 November - training in landings, shore bombardment, amphibious doctrine. Sailed 4 January 1945 with most of Group Eight, Flotilla Three, for Pearl Harbor (arrived 13 January, nested West Loch); departed 2 February for the Southern Solomons (Purvis Bay 17 February); staged for Okinawa via Ulithi (12-21 March); jumped off with Fifth Fleet elements 25 March. Led Group Eight in the initial assault on the beaches of Okinawa on Easter Sunday, delivering rocket and gunfire ahead of troop landings. Of 86 days in the Okinawa area: 43 days radar picket duty, plus anti-small-boat patrol, anti-aircraft and smoke screening; participated in the capture of Tori Shima 12 May. Credited with shooting down four Japanese planes, assisting in destruction of four more, probably a ninth, and probably destroying two suicide boats; General Quarters sounded 195 times totaling 144 hours. Recommended for the Navy Unit Commendation. Group Eight commander and staff shifted to LC(FF) 485 in early May. Postwar: Leyte Gulf 30 June; sailed 11 September for Tokyo Bay en route to occupation of northern Honshu; delayed by typhoon 16-18 September; Aomori occupation 25 September; moored Nagaura Ko off Yokosuka Naval Base 9 October; Yokohama 13-24 October; Sasebo 28 October; ordered to Buckner Bay, Okinawa, 10 November, arrived 12 November.

A first-person unit history provided to NavSource by the ship's commanding officer via the class association - detailed and contemporaneous but not an official record; it documents operations only, no materials or asbestos content. Its builder name ('George Lawley Shipbuilding Company') differs slightly from NavSource's 'George Lawley & Sons Corp.' - both forms refer to the Neponset yard.

    Finding
Hull-specific operational records exist and are digitized in the NARA catalog: this vessel's own war diary for 1 May - 24 June 1945 and four action reports it filed off Okinawa (small-craft action 4 May; Tori Shima invasion 12 May; AA actions 28 May and 6 June 1945), plus the LCS(L)(3) Group Eight war diary for 7 October - 14 November 1944 covering the flagship's transit to the Pacific. These are the primary-source operational record of the hull.

Class documentation for the type: the LCS(L)(3) is a shallow-draft, all-welded-steel gunboat 158 ft long, beam 23 ft 3 in, displacing 387 tons full load / 250 tons light, designed to accompany landing craft ashore and provide close-in fire support; crew 65 enlisted + 6 officers; contracts for 130 hulls built 1944-45 across three yards - George Lawley & Sons, Neponset MA (47 hulls, the yard that built this vessel); Albina Machinery, Portland OR (31); Commercial Iron Works, Portland OR (52). LCS-102 is the sole intact survivor of the class. Hull construction: second deck with crew quarters, wardroom, crew mess, first-aid station, magazine, engine compartments; 26 fuel/oil/water tanks below.

NPS nomination documents class design and production; it names this hull's builder class but not this hull specifically. The nomination contains no asbestos or insulation-content information - the text was searched; nothing found. Hull 12 was Lawley-built; the nomination's surviving-example detail describes Commercial Iron Works-built LCS-102.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A welded-steel amphibious gunboat built August-September 1944 inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era: era-standard applications aboard a small diesel warship of this type and period were thermal insulation in machinery spaces and exhaust runs, gaskets and valve packing in fuel/lube/fresh-water systems, electrical insulation, and fireproofing/firefighting textiles - in a hull ~158 ft long where 71 men worked in confined spaces. The all-diesel plant (two quad packs of GM 6-71 engines) means no steam plant aboard - the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; the diesel confined-space dynamic (machinery spaces, exhaust lagging, gaskets, packing) is the relevant pathway.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LCS(L)(3)-12 / LSSL-12 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener opinion search for exact designations returned zero hits; the only 'asbestos aboard' material surfaced anywhere is law-firm marketing content (mesowatch.org lists the builder yard in generic terms) with no primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944-built Navy vessel of this era is a reasonable era-consistent inference for asbestos-containing insulation, gaskets and packing, but that is not ship-proven. CourtListener docket-level (type=r) search could not be completed before report write-up (fleet pacing) - logged separately in the ledger; do not read this row as a litigation-negative finding beyond the completed opinion search. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
