    Finding
The official 1945 Ships' Data hull table lists 'LCS (L) (3) 125' built by George Lawley & Sons Corp., Neponset, Mass., keel laid 19 Nov 44, ship launched 1 Dec 44, date of first commission 17 Dec 44 - confirming builder, laid-down, launched, and commissioned dates from a contemporary BuShips publication.

    Limitations
Contemporary official register of construction facts only; establishes identity and build dates but contains no asbestos or materials information. NavSource cites the class spec block to 'Navships 250-012, April 15 1945'; Volume II of that edition is NAVSHIPS 250-011 (landing ships and craft) - the 250-012 volume covers auxiliaries and district craft, so the NavSource volume number is likely a mislabel of the same publication.

    Finding type

    Finding
On radar picket station 9A off Okinawa the night of 28-29 July 1945, LCS(L)(3)-125 operated with destroyers Callaghan (DD-792), Cassin Young (DD-793), and Pritchett (DD-561) and LCS(L)(3)-126, -129, and -130. When a kamikaze crashed Callaghan, LT Howell C. Cobb 'skillfully and courageously directed his ship throughout the salvage and rescue operations incident with the sinking of the CALLAGHAN,' brought -125 alongside the destroyer's starboard side, fought her fires with the ship's monitors, rescued 16 men and 10 officers, and remained alongside until heavy explosions forced him off; he then transferred LCS-129's survivors to Pritchett and searched the area. Cobb, like the COs of -129 and -130, received a medal for the action per the recommendation report as published (the page identifies File's award as the Silver Star; Cobb's award type is not specified).

Veteran-compiled transcription of an official award-recommendation report; the underlying report and action reports sit in NARA RG 38. Date conflict noted: the LCS-130 account dates the action to 29 July (Callaghan hit 0044, sank 0231) while DANFS records Callaghan's sinking at 0235 on 28 July - carried in gaps rather than resolved. Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
The documented propulsion is diesel - there is no boiler or steam plant aboard - so the asbestos-relevant systems on a vessel of this type and era were the era-standard small-combatant applications: machinery and exhaust insulation and lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation, products of the period commonly manufactured with asbestos fiber.

    Limitations
Era inference from the documented diesel plant and 1944 wartime construction; no insulation survey, materials list, or hull-specific document names asbestos aboard LCS(L)(3)-125 or the class. Does not establish presence, quantity, condition, or individual exposure.

    Finding
Class context: the LCS(L) was developed at the Navy's request for a shallow-draft close-in fire-support vessel, designed by George Lawley & Sons from the LCI(L) hull form; 130 hulls were produced by three yards - Lawley at Neponset MA (47), Albina Engine and Machine Works (31) and Commercial Iron Works (52) at Portland OR. Used solely in the Pacific; postwar, surviving units were laid up in reserve, redesignated LSSL in 1949, and many transferred to Japan and other allies.

    Finding
Shipbuilding History's yard-production table lists LCS(L) 125 built by Lawley & Sons, Neponset MA, FY44, commissioned 17 Dec 1944, disposition 'Scrapped 1951' - corroborating the builder and commission date but directly conflicting with NavSource's documented merchant trail (MV Pungo, MV Antilles Trader, MV John W., out of documentation 1987).

The two secondary sources conflict on final disposition and neither cites the underlying documentation record; the table's 'scrapped' notation is the compiler's shorthand for post-sale disposal and may simply end the record at the 1951 Navy sale. Conflict carried in gaps; not resolved.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The builder's surviving business archive is held at Mystic Seaport: the Lawley Family Collection contains vessel records, cost sheets, wage information, and time sheets for the Neponset yard - the likeliest surviving builder-side documentation set for LCS(L)(3)-125's construction, including any materials or subcontractor records. Finding
NARA's published digitized deck-log index contains no LCS(L) entries; the hull's 1944-1947 deck logs and the Flotilla Four / Group Thirteen war diaries and action reports covering her Okinawa service (including the Callaghan rescue) are paper/film holdings at Archives II, College Park - the primary-source path for verifying dates, positions, and any documented damage, repair, or material disturbances.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, litigation, or docketed case naming LCS(L)(3)-125 or LSSL-125 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion searches for 'LCS(L)(3)-125', 'LSSL-125', and 'LCS-125' returned zero; docket searches for 'LSSL-125' and 'LCS(L)(3)-125' returned zero, and docket hits on 'LCS-125' were unrelated name collisions (e.g., a pro-se complaint where the string appears in OCR'd text).

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 combatant of this type would plausibly have carried era-standard asbestos applications. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. The merchant-name CourtListener sweep ('Antilles Trader'/'MV Pungo') was fleet-rate-limited at session end - logged blocked, not negative.
