- Finding
- NavSource identifies this hull as LCS(L)(3)-20, built by George Lawley & Sons Corp. at Neponset, Massachusetts: laid down 4 September 1944, launched 13 September 1944, and commissioned 10 October 1944 under LT L. R. Hof, USNR. It assigns the ship to LCS(L)(3) Flotilla Three, Group Eight, Division Sixteen; records Okinawa Gunto operations from 26 March to 25 June 1945, Tsushima Straits minesweeping from 8-19 November and 20 November-4 December 1945, Far East occupation service from 2 September 1945 to 15 February 1946, and two WWII battle stars. The page records decommissioning 27 June 1946; Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group, Astoria, Oregon; redesignation LSSL-20 on 28 February 1949; loan to Japan on 29 July 1953 as JMSDF Himeyuri; return to U.S. custody on 29 August 1958; striking date unknown; and destruction as a gunnery target in December 1958.

- NavSource is a verified-live archival compilation, not a Navy registry. It documents service history and a specifications block but contains no asbestos, insulation, abatement, or exposure information. The final-disposition entry gives month and method, not a location or exact day.

[2]Robert P. Stone, Electronic Technician's Mate, 'A Brief History of U.S.S. LCS(L)(3) 20,' hosted by NavSource from the National Association of USS LCS(L) 1-130 [museum_official]

- Full narrative: opening commissioning passage; Okinawa, 4 April, 5 June, Sasebo, return/decommissioning, and epilogue passages
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Crew-member Robert P. Stone's history states that LCS(L)(3)-20 commissioned in Boston on 10 October 1944, made the Pacific transit after Chesapeake shakedown, and served at Okinawa. It recounts seven wounded after Japanese mortar fire during the approach to Okinawa; Kerama Retto anti-aircraft and suicide-boat/swimmer screening from 4 April; picket and skunk-patrol duty; three prisoners taken 5 June; mine-demolition duty out of Sasebo from 24 October 1945 to 25 January 1946; return to the United States; and decommissioning at Commercial Iron Works, Portland, on 27 June 1946. Its epilogue says the craft was loaned to Japan during the Korean War and later used by the U.S. Navy for target practice.

- Limitations
- First-person crew history, not a contemporaneous official log or materials record. It corroborates operational context but does not document asbestos, product composition, exposure, or the exact target-sinking date (its 1959 reference conflicts with the December 1958 NavSource timeline and is not carried as the disposition date).

[6]National Register of Historic Places registration form (draft), LCS-102, preserved LCS(L)(3) sister ship [nps]
- Locator
- NRHP draft form, Section 7 narrative description and materials fields
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The LCS-102 National Register form describes the LCS(L)(3) type as a shallow-draft, all-welded steel-hull gunboat, 158 feet long and 387 tons full load, built for close-in fire support; it describes Navy construction of 130 vessels in 1944-45. This provides class background for LCS(L)(3)-20, not a ship-specific material finding.

- The registration concerns sister ship LCS-102, not LCS(L)(3)-20. It does not identify asbestos, insulation composition, products, quantities, or condition aboard this hull; silence is not evidence of absence.

- Official GAO product URL was live but direct full-report retrieval returned HTTP 403 in this session. This is Navy-program context only, not evidence that asbestos was installed, removed, or remained aboard LCS(L)(3)-20; it identifies no product, quantity, exposure, causation, or eligibility result for this hull.

[8]Batch 5689 authoritative-source and authenticated-CourtListener research ledger [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-01 through sl-09
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, asbestos-product identification, or qualifying litigation record was located in the public authoritative sources reviewed. CourtListener exact-name and hull-number opinion/docket queries could not complete because the authenticated fleet pacing helper reported that the shared request budget was momentarily spent; those searches are blocked, not no-result findings.

- Limitations
- The absence of a located public record does not prove asbestos was absent. CourtListener coverage is incomplete: no anonymous or v3 request was made, and no result is asserted for the blocked queries. This row establishes neither exposure nor non-exposure, causation, quantity, present material condition, or legal eligibility.
