- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track official records but decommissioning and strike dates are undocumented for this hull. - Finding
- Commercial Iron Works yard list documents hull 172 as LCS(L) 29, delivered 12 September 1944 (matching the NavSource commissioning date), disposition 'scrapped 1951' (consistent with the January 1951 Learner Company sale). The table also documents the construction-block context: the CIW LCS batch was originally ordered as LCI(L) 845-865, then cancelled and reordered as LCS(L) 26-47 (yard hulls 169-190).

Cebu and Balikpapan participation is documented by OOB but does NOT appear as battle-star credit on the NavSource awards table, which credits Palawan and Tarakan only - see gaps. - Finding
- Class context: 130 LCS(L)(3)s were built during WWII; the type was developed by the George Lawley Company, Neponset MA, and produced there and by Albina Engine and Machine Works and Commercial Iron Works, Portland OR. The design used the existing LCI(L) hull and engineering plant with the superstructure and interior compartments redesigned as a purpose-built gunboat for close-in fire support. LCS(L)(3)s served only in the Pacific campaign. In 1949 those remaining in the U.S. Navy's inventory were redesignated Landing Ship Support Large (LSSL); 53 were transferred to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force beginning 1952, and others went to allied nations.

The JMSDF transfer fact does NOT apply to this hull, which was sold for scrapping January 1951.

- Finding
- A diesel-powered amphibious gunboat built in 1944 at Commercial Iron Works sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this period were: engine and diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, deck covering, and accommodation/bulkhead insulation - in a 158-foot hull with a complement of 71, a confined-space exposure dynamic aboard. As a diesel craft she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of larger steam vessels does not apply.

- The NHHC Archives Branch holds the L. Richard Rhame Collection (AR/453), the donated historical materials of the National Association of USS LCS(L)(3) 1-130. Per the NHHC collection description, the bulk of the collection 'is comprised of files on individual LCS(L) ships... arranged in ship order' and includes crew reminiscences, crew lists, ships' histories, war diary and action report extracts, newsletters, and photographs, plus lists of crewmembers for individual ships, flotillas, and group flagships. The collection scope covers all 130 hulls, so a ship file for LCS(L)(3)-29 is expected within it.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LCS(L)(3)-29 / LSSL-29 was found in the public sources searched. The NPS nomination for surviving sister LCS-102 describes class fabric (steel plating, frame, piping) without identifying asbestos. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; 'asbestos aboard' assertions for this hull exist only as law-firm marketing listicles (e.g., asbestos-ships.com naming the Commercial Iron Works yard) without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy. CourtListener coverage was partial: one authenticated opinions query ('LSSL-29' OR 'LCS(L)-29') returned zero hits; remaining queries were blocked by fleet-wide pacing this session - logged as partial, not a complete negative result.
