Commercial Iron Works construction trades (Aug-Oct 1944); crew of 6 officers + 65 enlisted (1944-decommissioning); Northern Metal Co. shipbreakers (1951)
    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates track official records but are not themselves a government publication; all construction milestones here are corroborated verbatim by the official Ships' Data 1945 construction table (ev-uss-lcsl336-02). The '(flagship)' annotation on the Flotilla Three line marks this hull as flotilla flagship per NavSource, but a contemporaneous photo caption records LC(FF)-988 serving as flagship for LCS Flotilla 3 at Aomori Wan in September 1945 - flagship assignments may have changed over time; the annotation is reported as published, not independently adjudicated. Page contains no asbestos or material content.

Official BuShips record for this hull: 'LCS(L)(3)36 - Commercial Iron Works, Portland, Oreg. - keel laid 28 Aug 44 - launched 17 Sept 44 - date of first commission 4 Oct 44' (construction table, p. 220). The class characteristics table for LCS(L)(3) 1-130 (p. 218-219) records: length 158 ft o.a.; extreme beam 23 ft 8 in; trial speed 14.4 knots; standard displacement 250 tons / full load 387 tons; armament 3 twin 40mm mounts and 10 rocket launchers; machinery 'G.M. Diesel 6051 series 71' rated 1,320 BHP with single G.M. main reduction gears and 2 diesel-drive 60 kW 450V A.C. ship's-service generators; 2 propellers. A table note records sisters stricken in 1945: LCS(L)(3)26 stricken 19 May 45 and LCS(L)(3)33 stricken 28 Apr 45 (both combat losses).

    Limitations
Official publication but wartime-dated: covers status as of 1945 and cannot address post-war milestones (decommissioning, 1949 LSSL reclassification, 1951 disposal). Machinery figure of 1,320 BHP conflicts with NavSource's 1,600 BHP - carried as a spec conflict in gaps, not adjudicated. Contains no asbestos or material content. Digitization is a Google Books scan hosted by shipscribe.com (secondary host; document itself is the government publication).

    Finding
Official U.S. Naval Historical Center photograph NH 104363-KN (color) documents 'A Landing Craft, Support (Large) [LCS(L)] operating off Iwo Jima, probably during the pre-landing bombardment, circa 19 February 1945. Note explosions and smoke ashore, flares falling overhead, and LCVP underway in the right center. This ship appears to be either USS LCS(L)-31 or USS LCS(L)-36.' Original 35mm Kodachrome transparency photographed by LT. Howard W. Whalen, USNR, Boat Group Commander, USS Sanborn (APA-193); Whalen collection, donated by Mrs. Nadine Whalen, 1997. Additional NavSource-captioned photography (National Association of USS LCS(L) 1-130 collection) documents this hull heading into Iwo Jima 19 February 1945, anchored at Aomori Wan 27 September 1945, and at Sasebo November 1945.

Crew during Iwo Jima operation (February 1945)
    Limitations
The official caption is deliberately ambiguous - the NHHC catalog entry itself says the ship 'appears to be either USS LCS(L)-31 or USS LCS(L)-36'; the photo is therefore an archival lead placing this hull at the Iwo Jima anchorage consistent with its documented campaign record, not a confirmed ship identification. NavSource reproduces the same frame captioned definitively as LCS(L)(3)-36 - NavSource's certainty exceeds the official caption's. The supplementary NavSource-captioned photos are veterans'-association material, not cataloged Navy photography. No asbestos content.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-powered landing craft built in 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small combatant of this type and period were diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and limited thermal insulation in machinery spaces and galley areas. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and total asbestos inventory would have been far smaller than aboard a steam ship, but the confined-hull exposure dynamic applies.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, work package, or plan was located for LCS(L)(3)-36. The original construction drawings (Lawley 'Instructions for LCS(L)(3) Class' / 'Original Plans of LCS(L)(3)', cited by NavSource as spec sources) are undigitized and may enumerate installed materials - open archival lead. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LCS(L)(3)-36 / LSSL-36 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener API v4 opinion searches returned zero results for 'LCS(L)(3)-36', 'LSSL-36', 'LCS-36', and 'Commercial Iron Works' asbestos (2026-09-30); the docket-level (type=r) query remained blocked by fleet pacing at record time (logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result). Secondary web sweeps surfaced only law-firm marketing content asserting asbestos aboard landing craft and at Commercial Iron Works generally (mesotheliomaguide.com, asbestos-ships.com, mesotheliomalawyercenter.org) - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the docket-level litigation search is a genuine open gap (pacing-blocked, not run; opinion search returned zero). RG 24 deck logs, RG 38 flotilla war diaries/action reports (TG 52.5 Iwo Jima report exists per published bibliography), Lawley class drawings, and the 1951 sale/scrapping contract file are undigitized archival leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Locator
ShipbuildingHistory LCS(L) table row for LCS(L)-36 and yard summary; corroborating yard history via Wikipedia Commercial Iron Works article (secondary)
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Builder context: the construction roster attributes 52 of 130 LCS(L)(3)s to Commercial Iron Works, Portland OR (hulls 26-47 and 79-108), corroborating -36's builder assignment ('LCS(L) 36 | Commercial IW | Portland OR | 44 | 4-Oct-44 | Scrapped 1951'). The yard's wartime output was ~188-200 small warships (LCI(L)s, LCS(L)s, PCs, net layers, minesweepers, tugs); it closed in 1946 and the site was sold to Zidell and became a major shipbreaking operation. No yard-level government asbestos survey (NIOSH HHE, OSHA, or equivalent) was located for Commercial Iron Works - unlike documented yards such as Electric Boat, there is no published exposure record for this builder.

    Limitations
Secondary reference compilation, not a government source - builder attribution is corroborated independently by the official Ships' Data 1945 table (ev-uss-lcsl336-02). Yard production totals (52 LCS(L)s; ~188-200 boats overall) are secondary figures. The absence of a located yard asbestos survey is a coverage gap in the record, not evidence the yard was asbestos-free.
