    Limitations
NavSource is a compiled archival reference, not itself the primary record - its underlying sources (NavShips 250-012, Lawley plans, awards files) are cited on the page but not digitized there. Several lifecycle dates are listed as unknown by the source itself (US decommissioning, return from Ryukyuan custody, striking, final disposition). Contains no asbestos or materials information.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
LCS(L)(3)-54 is absent from the NHHC official casualty list for LCS(L) type ships: the list records hulls 7, 15, 26, 33, 37 (damaged beyond repair), 49, and 127 as losses - hull 54 is not among them, consistent with her documented survival through Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the Formosa operations into postwar reserve.

    Limitations
Absence from the casualty list establishes survival, not the absence of combat damage or casualties aboard - damaged-but-repaired ships are not fully enumerated. Does not speak to materials or asbestos.

    Finding
Independent corroboration of build identity: Albina yard hull no. 208 = 'LCS(L) 54', U.S. Navy landing craft, 246 tons, 159 ft, completion dated 9-Oct-44, disposition noted 'To Korea 1952 as Po Song Man'. The same table shows Albina's LCS(L) contract run as hulls 48-78 (yard nos. 184-215; nos. 184-201 reassigned from cancelled LCI(L) 1034-1051).

    Finding
Published Ninth Circuit LHWCA opinion in a death-benefits claim: decedent James McAllister died of mesothelioma from asbestos exposure during work as a shipyard carpenter for three employers including Albina Engine & Machine Works (the builder of this hull) in 1956; all parties stipulated the death was mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure at maritime situs; the ALJ/BRB found Albina the responsible employer; the Ninth Circuit reversed on burden-of-proof grounds and assigned liability to Lockheed Shipbuilding. Documents asbestos exposure in the builder's Portland yard workforce - the same yard that constructed this hull.

    Population
Shipyard carpenters and trades at Albina, Willamette Iron & Steel, and Lockheed yards, 1956-1960
    Limitations
Yard-level exposure documentation, not vessel evidence: the opinion names no ship, the decedent's Albina employment (1956) postdates this hull's 1944 construction by twelve years, and the appellate disposition turned on which employer bore liability - it is not a finding about conditions aboard any hull built there. Classification kept at class_or_era/context accordingly.

    Finding
The class-standard plant documented for this hull is all-diesel: two quad packs of four GM 6-71-series diesels per shaft (1,600 bhp), GM main reduction gears, twin variable-pitch propellers, two diesel-driven 60 kW generators - no boilers, no steam distribution. The boiler and steam-main insulation pathway characteristic of steam-driven warships is therefore absent. Era-typical asbestos applications aboard a 1944 landing craft (engine exhaust lagging, machinery/heat insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, deck coverings, fireproof panels) are plausible but unverified - no LCS(L)(3) materials document is digitized.

    Limitations
The propulsion facts are documented for the class/hull; the asbestos material inference is NOT supported by any located ship- or class-specific materials source and is flagged inference throughout. Does not establish that asbestos was or was not present aboard this hull, quantity, or location.

Contemporary published reference confirms the Korea-transfer identity: 'PO SONG MAN LSSL 109 (ex-LSSL 54)' among ex-U.S. LSSLs on loan to the Republic of Korea, 230 tons standard/387 full load, diesel machinery, complement 71 - corroborating NavSource's transfer record with the ROK pennant number.

    ROK Navy crew (complement ~71)
    Limitations
Jane's is a secondary reference annual, not a USN or ROK primary record; romanization ('Po Song Man' vs 'Boseongman') and the ex-hull attribution reflect 1962 editorial data. Companion entry 'Yong Il Man LSSL 110' is attributed to ex-LSSL 66 in this edition while a Wikipedia compilation attributes it to ex-LCS(L)(3)-86 - collateral discrepancy not affecting this hull. No asbestos content.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, maintenance record, or docketed case naming LCS(L)(3)-54, LSSL-54, or Po Song Man/Boseongman was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The only litigation surfaced is builder-yard level (Albina, 9th Cir. 2010) naming no vessel.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1944 wartime construction is era-consistent with asbestos materials. CourtListener coverage was partial this session (fleet pacing budget exhausted): authenticated opinion searches for 'LCS(L)(3)-54' and 'LSSL-54' both returned zero results, but 'LCS-54' collision check and docket-index queries remained blocked at close - logged as blocked, not as negative results. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
