  1. [1]National Archives, Special List 44: List of Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Miscellaneous Units, 1801-1947 - 'Special List #44, by Ship Numbers' section [other_primary]

    Finding
The official NARA finding aid inventories Navy deck logs for LCS(L)(3)-6 covering 8/27/1944 - 12/31/1945 (PDF page 33, row reads 'LCS(L)(3)-6 8/27/1944 12/31/1945'). These dated Navy records establish in-scope WWII service for this hull; the coverage dates are the span of surviving logbooks in the accession, not commissioning or decommissioning dates - though the begin date coincides with the commissioning date documented by NavSource and the builder's yard list. The physical logbooks are at NARA College Park (RG 24).

    Crew of LCS(L)(3)-6, 8/27/1944 - 12/31/1945
    Limitations
The inventory entry documents that logs exist and their coverage window; it contains no asbestos, material, or exposure content. No post-1945 log entries for this hull appear in the SL44 accession - any 1946-1950 logs (including the reported reserve-training period) sit in the later postwar deck-log series, an unverified lead. NARA online catalog is JS-rendered and could not be checked for digitization status this session.

Spec block (sourced to Ships' Data U.S. Naval Vessels NavShips 250-012 Apr 15 1945, Baker's Allied Landing Craft of WWII, and Lawley's own 'Instructions for LCS(L)(3) Class'): 250 t light / 387 t full; 158 ft oa; beam 23 ft 8 in; 16.5 kt max; complement 6 officers, 65 enlisted; armament 1 x 3"/50 DP, 2 x twin 40mm, 4 x 20mm, 4 x .50 cal, 10 x Mk7 rocket launchers; propulsion 2 quad packs of 4 GM 6051-series 71 diesels per shaft (1,600 BHP), GM main reduction gear, 2 diesel-driven 60kW 450V AC generators, twin variable-pitch propellers. Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track official records but several fields are 'date unknown' and post-1945 detail comes from a different secondary source (see ev-03 and gaps). Contains no asbestos content. The Mississippi River 1946 photo caption is transcribed, not independently verified against the NARA original.

    Finding
Secondary compilation detail for this hull beyond NavSource: commissioned 27 August 1944; stateside training vessel during WWII; post-war occupation-duty assignment in the Far East; decommissioned 1 October 1946; recommissioned 13 November 1947 as a Naval Reserve training ship (to ~1950); redesignated LSSL-6 on 28 February 1949; final decommissioning 6 February 1950; struck 27 February 1951. The struck date sits one day before NavSource's documented sale to Northern Metal Company (28 February 1951) - an internally consistent sequence.

    Limitations
Single secondary source, unverified against primary records: NavSource leaves these fields 'date unknown'. The 'occupation duty in the Far East' note is in tension with NavSource's stateside-training characterization and the 1946 Mississippi River photo - unresolved (see gaps). Does not identify where the reserve-training duty was performed. No asbestos content.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The builder's-yard production table independently confirms identity and builder: LCS(L) 6 was Lawley yard hull 1611, a 158-ft, 250-ton landing craft delivered to the U.S. Navy 27 August 1944, later LSSL 6, scrapped 1951. Lawley's run for the class was hulls 1606-1630 (LCS(L) 1-25) and 1631-1652 (LCS(L) 109-130); Albina Engine & Machine Works and Commercial Iron Works (Portland, OR) built the intervening numbers. Yard context: George S. Lawley & Sons was a yacht-building firm at Point Norfolk, Neponset (moved there 1909); hull numbers reached 1677 and the yard closed in 1945.

Secondary yard-compilation, but it corroborates NavSource on builder, delivery date, and fate. The yard's wartime material records are not located.

    Finding
Class context: 130 LCS(L)(3)s were built during WWII; the class was developed by the George Lawley Company, Neponset, MA, and produced there and by Albina Engine & Machine Works and Commercial Iron Works, Portland, OR; they served in the Pacific campaign; in 1949 the LCS(L)(3)s remaining in the Navy's inventory were redesignated Landing Ship Support Large (LSSL); 53 LSSLs were transferred to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in 1952 and others to allied nations. The sole surviving class member, USS LCS(L)(3)-102 (a Commercial Iron Works boat), is a museum ship at Mare Island, Vallejo, CA, listed on the National Register (NRHP 15000716, listed 13 October 2015).

    Finding
A diesel-powered landing-support gunboat built in 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were exhaust and engine-room lagging, thermal insulation, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in a compact hull volume. As a diesel-only craft she carried no boilers or steam machinery - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LCS(L)(3)-6 / USS LSSL-6 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener opinion searches returned zero results for '"LCS(L)(3)-6"', '"LSSL-6"', '"LCS(L)" asbestos', '"LCS-6" asbestos', and '"Landing Craft Support" asbestos'; the docket-type (type=r) index was deferred under the fleet-wide pacing limit and is logged as pending in search_ledger rather than counted as negative. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no law-firm marketing page naming this numbered hull. No DANFS entry exists (numbered landing craft are not individually covered); no NVR entry (disposed 1951, outside NVR coverage).

The CourtListener pass is incomplete (docket index pending under fleet pacing) - logged honestly, not a full negative. The surviving deck logs (SL44: 8/1944-12/1945), any postwar logs, Lawley build records, and the 1951 scrapping-sale record are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

DISAMBIGUATION: the pennant 'LSSL-6' identifies two different hulls. This vessel - ex-USS LCS(L)(3)-6, Lawley hull 1611 - was reclassified USS LSSL-6 on 28 February 1949 and scrapped in 1951. Separately, ex-USS LCS(L)(3)-80 (Commercial Iron Works) was transferred on loan to France 15 August 1950 and served as RFS La Rapiere wearing French pennant LSSL-6 (later JDS Nadeshiko). Records of the French 'LSSL-6' are not records of this hull.
