Specification block (per NavShips 250-012, 15 Apr 1945): 250 t light / 387 t full; 158 ft oa; beam 23 ft 8 in; 6 officers, 65 enlisted; propulsion two quad packs of 4 GM 6051-series-71 diesels per shaft, 1,600 BHP, GM main reduction gears, twin variable-pitch propellers, two diesel-drive 60 kW 450 V AC generators; armament one twin 40 mm bow mount, two twin 40 mm AA mounts, four single 20 mm, four .50 cal, ten Mk7 rocket launchers. Photo captions place the hull moored pierside at Yokosuka circa late 1945 (with LCS(L)(3)-93, -95, -89, -81) and at Kure shipyard, Japan, circa February 1946 (alongside USS LSM-371).

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestones track Ships' Data/NVR-era records but decommission and strike dates are explicitly unknown there. Contains no asbestos content whatsoever. Specifications derive from a wartime NavShips data sheet as transcribed by NavSource, not the primary document itself.

    Finding
Documented for this hull (association-compiled narrative): after fitting out at Portland, sailed 18 January 1945 with LCS(L)(3)-92 for San Diego, arriving 23 January; shakedown and training 26 January - 14 February; availability for overhaul 16-28 February; designated flagship LCS(L)(3) Division 23. Departed San Diego 3 March in Task Unit 6.11.31 (twelve LCSs, LCDR J. A. Dodson Jr.); Pearl Harbor 12 March; Eniwetok 24 April; Guam 2 May; Saipan 3 May; arrived Okinawa 1453 on 10 May, under air attack within the hour. Smoke cover for USS Colorado off Naha (11 May); radar-picket fire-support duty at RP9 (14-23 May) with two destroyers and three other LCSs - combined fire of LCS 65, 67 and 53 splashed an attacker 1930 on 17 May; overnight search for USS Douglas H. Fox survivors after its kamikaze hit. On 28 May took kamikaze-damaged LCS(L)(3)-119 in hand: pumped her engine rooms and flooded holds, removed ten dead, treated casualties, towed her to the repair-ship anchorage; then Radar Picket Station 5 from 29 May. June: Ie Shima AA screen, anti-small-boat patrol, smoke for USS New Orleans and USS Portland; nightly attacks through 26 June. Campaign totals per the narrative: 82 general-quarters calls, 66.5 hours at GQ, 43 hours laying smoke in Hagushi harbor. San Pedro Bay, Leyte Gulf 26 July; alongside USS Ajax in availability 1-20 August (present at the cease-offensive-operations dispatch 16 August); Tokyo Bay 11 September, Third Fleet then Fifth Fleet occupation duty.

    Limitations
Association-compiled narrative (war-diary style) hosted by NavSource, provided by the National Association of USS LCS(L) 1-130 - not an official registry document and not independently verified against NARA deck logs or war diary (undigitized). Internally consistent with NavSource's milestone data. Contains no asbestos content. Portions of the narrative post-20 September 1945 are truncated in the hosted copy.

    Finding
Independent yard-table corroboration for this hull: Albina Engine & Machine Works yard hull no. 190 is USS LCS(L)-67, a 246 GT / 159 ft landing craft, delivered 8 January 1945, disposition 'To Japan 1953 as Karukaya, returned 1958, sunk as target 1959.' The same table documents that Albina's wartime build list included landing craft, subchasers, cargo ships and barges, and that cancelled LCI(L) orders (LCI(L) 1034-1051) had their hull numbers reassigned to LCS(L) hulls - placing this hull's construction inside Albina's wartime production run.

    Finding
Japanese-service detail for this hull: the jounin.jp LSSL table lists LSSL-67 (Albina Engine & Machine Works) commissioned 1945/1/8, a second date of 1946/8/20 (field semantics unclear - see limitations), and a struck date of 1958/8/29; notes record the 28 February 1949 LSSL redesignation, loan to Japan on 1953/8/29 as the guard vessel (keibi-sen) Karukaya, JMSDF pennant LSSL-446, redesignation to guard boat (keibi-tei) on 1954/7/1, striking and return from Japan on 1958/8/29, and sinking as a target 1959/5. Navypedia independently lists Karukaya (ex-LSSL67, ex-LCS(L)(3)67), LSSL446, Albina Portland, laid 11.1944, launched 2.12.1944, commissioned 1.1945, JMSDF 7.1953, returned 8.1958.

    Limitations
Non-English secondary compilations, not official JMSDF or USN records. Date conflicts: US-side transfer is 29 July 1953 per NavSource vs 29 August 1953 for entry into JMSDF service per jounin.jp (probably loan date vs commissioning date - unresolved); the 1946/8/20 field does not behave like a USN decommission date on a sister hull (LSSL-68 shows 1946/9/16 vs NavSource's April 1946 decommissioning), so it is carried as unverified. Contains no asbestos content.

They were developed by the George Lawley Company, Neponset, Mass and produced there and by Albina Engine and Machine Works, and Comercial [sic] Iron Works, Portland Oregon. LCS(L)(3)s served only in the Pacific campaign. In 1949 LCS(L)(3)s remaining in the US Navy's inventory were redesignated Landing Ship Support Large (LSSL). Fifty-three LSSLs were transferred to the Japan Maritime Self-defense Force in 1952 and numerous others were transferred to allied nations.'

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Adjudicated asbestos-exposure documentation for this hull's builder: a shipyard carpenter who worked for three covered shipyard employers between 1956 and 1960 (his Albina Engine employment ending in 1957) died 22 September 2002 of left pleural mesothelioma; his widow claimed LHWCA death benefits. On the third trip through the Board, the BRB affirmed the ALJ's findings - 'convincing and undisputed evidence' of asbestos exposure at Willamette Iron and Steel, and testimony from contemporaneous employees establishing that 'work and conditions at Albina Engine were similar,' plus the widow's statement that the decedent 'specifically named Albina Engine as having exposed him to asbestos.' The ALJ found Albina Engine was the last employer to expose the decedent to asbestos and therefore the responsible employer; the Board affirmed, finding substantial evidence supported the determination. This was a merits-level affirmed administrative finding of asbestos exposure at the Albina Engine yard.

    Limitations
Yard-level litigation record - names the builder (Albina Engine and Machine), not this hull. The decedent's Albina exposure window (employment ending 1957) postdates this hull's 1944 construction; the finding documents asbestos conditions at the yard generally, not aboard LCS(L)(3)-67 and not during her build. A workers' compensation responsible-employer adjudication under the LHWCA - it establishes exposure at the yard for that claimant; it is not a products identification record.

    Finding
A diesel-powered naval landing craft built November-December 1944 sits squarely inside the documented Navy asbestos era, and her builder's yard has an adjudicated asbestos-exposure record. Era-standard applications aboard a naval craft of this type and period were engine and diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation; accommodation joiner insulation and paint/coatings of the period also commonly contained asbestos. As an all-diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler and turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

CourtListener returned zero results for all hull designations in both opinion and docket indexes and zero for a 'landing craft support' + asbestos/mesothelioma opinion sweep.
