- Finding
- A first-person ship history written by the commanding officer, LT Clifford C. Lockwood, published on the NavSource history page for this hull via the National Association of USS LCS(L) 1-130: the ship was sponsored by the Women's Emergency Corps of Portland; sailed 7 December 1944 with USS LCS(L)(3)-82 down the Columbia River to San Diego (arrived 11 December); crew had trained at the amphibious bases at Fort Pierce, Florida and Solomons, Maryland; departed for the forward area 12 January 1945 via Pearl Harbor and convoyed ships into Guam; arrived in the Okinawa area 16 April 1945 for radar picket patrol and anti-suicide-boat patrol, with collateral duties including laying smoke screens during alerts; on 4 May 1945, after USS LSM(R)-190 and destroyer USS Luce were sunk by suicide planes on her station, the 81 conducted immediate rescue work with a number of lives saved; splashed her first kamikaze 6 May; captured three Japanese small boats and 39 prisoners and sank a fourth boat on the nights of 6-8 June; splashed another suicide plane 22 June; departed Okinawa 10 July, reached Leyte 14 July; ordered to occupation duty 2 September; arrived Tokyo Bay 11 September 1945.

- USS LCS(L)(3)-81 officers and crew (1944-1945); rescued survivors of LSM(R)-190 and USS Luce (4 May 1945)
- Limitations
- First-person commanding-officer account published by the veterans' association and hosted by NavSource - a primary-voice memoir, not an official action report; individual operational details (dates of specific engagements, prisoner counts) are not independently verified here. The NHHC H-Gram independently corroborates this hull's presence on the Luce/LSM(R)-190 picket station on 4 May 1945 (see ev-05). Contains no asbestos content.

- section 'Loss of Luce (DD-522) and LSM(R)-190 on Radar Picket Station No. 12'
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NHHC's official H-Gram 046-2 ('Kikusui No. 5'), an NHHC Director's Corner history publication on the 4 May 1945 mass kamikaze attack off Okinawa, names this hull directly: Radar Picket Station No. 12 'was patrolled by destroyer Luce (DD-522)... Luce was on station accompanied only by four smaller amphibious vessels, LSM(R)-190... as well as LCS(L)-81, 84 and 118.' Luce was sunk at about 0815 with 149 dead; LSM(R)-190 sank at 0850 with 14 dead - the third 'rocket ship' lost in just over 12 hours.

- Official NHHC publication naming this hull on the picket station and documenting the battle context; it does not describe LCS(L)-81's individual actions (the rescue work rests on the Lockwood memoir) and contains no asbestos or material content.

- Finding type

- Finding
- NARA Special List #44 (by Ship Numbers), the National Archives inventory of World War II-era deck logs, lists LCS(L)(3)-81 with log coverage from 24 November 1944 through 30 June 1945 - the coverage start date exactly matches the documented commissioning date.

- Limitations
- The logbook inventory establishes that a deck-log series exists for this hull and its date coverage; it establishes nothing about construction details, operations, asbestos content, or individual exposure. The underlying logs are an archival lead - digitization status unverified (catalog.archives.gov is JS-rendered and could not be searched from this session).

- authenticated helper output: quoted hull query count 0; quoted LSSL-81 count 0; unquoted exact-name count 29, all name collisions
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- CourtListener authenticated API v4 searches completed this session: exact quoted hull-number opinion query "LCS(L)(3)-81" returned count 0; quoted alias opinion query "LSSL-81" returned count 0. An unquoted exact-name query USS LCS(L)(3)-81 returned count 29, all loose-token name collisions (e.g., a court-martial convened aboard USS Sierra; 'USS' as United States Steel/USX Corp. party names) - no result names this hull. No qualifying asbestos-litigation opinion was returned by the searches completed.

- Negative search results within a bounded scope, not proof that no litigation exists. The quoted exact-name opinion query and the RECAP docket (type=r) queries could not be completed - the helper reported the fleet-wide pacing budget as momentarily spent - and are logged pending in the search_ledger; no anonymous or unauthenticated requests were made.

- Finding
- No ship-specific primary source documenting asbestos aboard USS LCS(L)(3)-81 - no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or ship-specific material record - was located in this research. Asbestos documentation for this hull is unknown.

- Limitations
- A bounded negative search is not proof that asbestos was absent aboard this hull. No class-era inference is carried into this record as an asbestos finding: this is a small diesel-powered amphibious craft with no steam plant, and class/era construction history alone was not used to infer asbestos aboard this hull. Deck logs (NARA coverage 1944-11-24 to 1945-06-30) and builder records (Commercial Iron Works; Lawley class instructions/plans cited by NavSource) are open archival leads.
