Crew (6 officers, 65 enlisted - class specification); construction trades at Commercial Iron Works, Portland, 1944
    Limitations
Establishes identity, construction, operational history, awards, and disposition timeline for this hull. Limitations
Class-level context for this hull's design, builders, and the 1949 LSSL reclassification and 1953 Japan transfer documented ship-specifically in ev-01. The index text says the JMSDF transfers occurred 'in 1952'; this hull's transfer is dated 30 May 1953 by the vessel page - transfers clearly ran 1952-53. No asbestos or materials information.

Peer-reviewed historical study documenting that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during World War II and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization - the program and era under which this 1944 landing craft was built.

    Population
WWII shipyard workers and ship crews (era context)
    Limitations
Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel, this class, or landing craft specifically and does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. This diesel-propelled craft carried no boilers or steam plant, so the steam-lagging pathway documented for boiler vessels does not apply.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming LCS(L)(3)-90 / LSSL-90 / Shida was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener access was fleet-paced during this session - logged as blocked, not as a negative result.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1944 construction is era-consistent with asbestos-containing gaskets, packing, and insulation. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. Litigation status is open pending a completed CourtListener search.
