    Locator
DANFS entry, opening construction paragraph; March 1944 loss narrative; final sentence on striking
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
DANFS identifies Leopold as DE-319, built by Consolidated Steel Corporation at Orange, Texas; laid down 24 March 1943, launched 12 June 1943, and commissioned 18 October 1943. The Coast Guard-manned destroyer escort served in Atlantic convoy escort operations. On 9 March 1944 it was torpedoed by U-255, broke in two, and sank south of Iceland; USS Joyce rescued 28 survivors. DANFS says Leopold was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 25 March 1944. The entry reports the approximate loss location as 58°36'N, 25°57'W.

Crew of USS Leopold; Coast Guard-manned Navy ship
    Limitations
DANFS is a ship history and does not document asbestos, shipboard materials, individual exposure, or a hazardous-material survey. The reported position is approximate. The entry's loss date narrative is 9 March with the stern scuttled after midnight on 10 March; this record describes the attack date and sinking sequence without treating the calendar date as a contradiction.

    Limitations
This is a finding aid entry, not the logs themselves. It documents only the listed date span and does not establish that no other records survive. No asbestos or material information is stated.

  3. [3]Source review of DANFS Leopold (DE-319), together with the National Archives Special List 44 logbook finding aid [nhhc_danfs]
    Locator
DANFS full entry; NARA Special List 44, Leopold row
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
The official ship history and NARA deck-log finding aid reviewed for this record contain no asbestos survey, abatement record, asbestos-containing product identification, or other direct asbestos documentation for Leopold. Ship-specific asbestos status is therefore unknown on the evidence reviewed.

    Research reviewed 2026-09-28
    Limitations
A bounded source-review negative only; it does not prove asbestos was absent. The deck logs themselves were not examined, and no full NARA, Coast Guard personnel, shipyard, wreck, or litigation-file search has been completed. No inference from class, construction era, machinery, or propulsion is used as a ship-specific finding.

  4. [4]CourtListener authenticated API v4 litigation sweep via required fleet helper; helper exited with fleet-wide pacing stand-down before search results returned [court_record]
    Locator
cl-auth-search.py invocation for exact-name query 'USS Leopold'; stderr: fleet-wide pacing budget momentarily spent
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
CourtListener exact-name and hull-number searches were not completed. The authenticated helper reported that the fleet-wide request budget was momentarily spent and directed the session to perform non-CourtListener research and try later. No litigation result is asserted.

    Limitations
This is a blocked/pending search, not a no-result finding. The helper's stand-down occurred before any search response was returned. No anonymous request, direct API request, or v3 API request was made.
