- vessel_history
- Finding
- NHHC DANFS identifies this hull as Fletcher-class destroyer DD-481: laid down 3 June 1941 at Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton; launched 29 October 1942; commissioned 4 March 1944. It records fitting out and post-shakedown availability at Puget Sound Navy Yard, battle damage from a kamikaze on 6 April 1945, temporary repairs and the August 1945 Hunter's Point overhaul that ceased after Japan's surrender, decommissioning 6 December 1945 into Mare Island custody, striking 3 January 1946, and ultimate sale for scrap on 17 June 1947. DANFS gives complement 325 and speed 35.5 knots.

- Puget Sound Navy Yard construction and fitting-out trades; wartime crew
- Limitations
- Documents hull identity, dates, locations, damage, repair chronology, and disposal; it does not identify asbestos, asbestos-containing materials, quantities, work scope, exposure, causation, or legal eligibility.

[3]U.S. Government Accountability Office, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (Oct. 18, 1979) [gao]
- Locator
- GAO HRD-80-2 product page description
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s. DD-481 was constructed and retired before that substitution period; this provides Navy-era context for research prioritization only.

- 1979 report; historical Navy program
- Population
- Navy shipyard workers and shipboard asbestos program
- Limitations
- Navy-wide program documentation, not a DD-481 material record. It does not establish asbestos aboard this hull, identify products or locations, quantify materials, establish exposure or causation, or speak to legal eligibility. Full report text was not retrieved from the GAO site.

[4]CourtListener API v4 authenticated exact-name and hull-number searches, 2026-09-27 [court_record]
- Locator
- search_ledger entries sl-uss-leutze-dd481-03 through sl-uss-leutze-dd481-06
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Authenticated CourtListener API v4 exact-name sweep completed: quoted "USS Leutze" returned 0 opinion results and 0 RECAP docket results. The required quoted hull-number searches for "DD-481" were not completed because the helper reported that the fleet-wide pacing budget was momentarily spent; they are recorded as blocked rather than treated as zero-result searches.

- 2026-09-27 search
- Limitations
- The zero result applies only to the exact-name searches; the required hull-number searches remain incomplete because of fleet pacing. Neither result nor the temporary gap proves whether litigation or exposure occurred. CourtListener covers only indexed opinions and federal RECAP dockets, not unindexed state filings, settled matters, sealed records, or non-digitized historical litigation; it establishes no material presence or individual exposure.

[5]Batch-3464 documented authoritative-source search ledger for USS Leutze (DD-481) [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger entries sl-uss-leutze-dd481-01 through sl-uss-leutze-dd481-07
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazardous-material disclosure, material inventory, or disposal record was located in the public authoritative sources searched. The CourtListener exact-name sweep returned no result; required hull-number litigation queries remain blocked by shared pacing and are not included in this negative finding.

- Study period
- 1941-2026 public records searched
- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard this hull. This negative finding excludes the incomplete CourtListener hull-number sweep and does not establish or defeat any individual's exposure, causation, claim, or legal eligibility.
