    Finding
YMS-395 was laid down by Harbor Boat Building (Terminal Island, Calif.) on 11 July 1942; launched 15 July 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Ruth Oliver; commissioned 20 November 1943, Lt. William V. Byrd in command. After shakedown off San Pedro she conducted ASW patrols off the California coast until 7 March 1944, sailed for Pearl Harbor, and arrived Majuro, Marshall Islands, 18 April 1944. For the next 16 months she performed patrol, convoy-escort, and minesweeping services in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands, keeping staging harbors clear of mines. She departed Guam 14 September 1945, arrived San Pedro 26 October 1945, conducted experimental minesweeping tests on the west coast until May 1946, arrived Charleston, S.C., 13 June 1946 and continued similar exercises on the east coast. Renamed Linnet (AMS-24) 18 February 1947 and assigned to the Mine Warfare School, Yorktown, Va., performing mine-warfare experiments and exercises 1947-1957. Reclassified MSC(O)-24 on 7 February 1955; decommissioned at Philadelphia 13 September 1957; placed in service as a Naval Reserve training ship 30 October 1959, 4th Naval District, Atlantic City, N.J.; relieved by Meadow Lark (MSC-196) 3 September 1968; struck from the Navy list 1 October 1968 for disposal.

Crew of USS YMS-395 / USS Linnet (1943-1968); Naval Reserve trainees, Atlantic City (1959-1968)
    Limitations
Identity and service chronology only. Verification is 'partial' because the live NHHC page returned HTTP 503 and the text was read from search-index extracts rather than a full-page fetch; the DANFS stats line (displacement, dimensions, complement, armament, propulsion) was NOT retrieved and nothing from it is carried. One extract phrases the 1947-1957 period as 'along the west coast', which conflicts with the Yorktown/Charleston/Philadelphia context - logged in gaps, not resolved. DANFS contains no asbestos, insulation, or materials content; supports no exposure finding.

    Finding
NHHC holds a black-and-white photograph catalogued as NH 89231, titled 'USS LINNET (MSCO-24) (ex: YMS-395)', which ties the MSC(O)-24 designation of Linnet to the former YMS-395 in an official NHHC collection record.

    Limitations
Only the catalog title was confirmed (via search index); the full caption, date, and location were not retrieved because the page returned HTTP 503. A photograph establishes identity/designation only - not materials, conditions, or crew exposure. No asbestos content.

  3. [3]DANFS 'Linnet II (AM-76)' and 'Linnet III (YMS-395)' entries, NHHC (numbering of the name's three Navy bearers, incl. 'Linnet I (Brigantine)') [nhhc_danfs]
    Locator
DANFS entry titles Linnet I (Brigantine), Linnet II (AM-76), Linnet III (YMS-395); III text at https://www.history.navy.mil/research/histories/ship-histories/danfs/l/linnet-iii.html
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Alias consolidation and same-name separation: DANFS treats YMS-395, Linnet (AMS-24), and MSC(O)-24 as one hull (Linnet III). USS Linnet (AM-76, later IX-166; ex-trawler Georgetown, commissioned 1941, struck 1945) is a different vessel (Linnet II) and is NOT a duplicate of this record; its evidence belongs to record uss-linnet-am76 and none of it is carried here. The name Linnet did not attach to YMS-395 until 18 February 1947, so wartime (1943-1947) records for this hull are filed under 'YMS-395', not 'Linnet'.

    Finding
Class/era context only: YMS-395 was a YMS-1-class motor minesweeper (YMS-135 subclass per secondary sources), a wooden-hulled, diesel-propelled type built largely by small boat yards in 1942-45. A diesel sweeper of this type had no boilers, steam drums, or steam-line lagging - the largest asbestos applications on steam-driven steel combatants. Any era-typical asbestos-containing items aboard the type would be limited to smaller applications (engine/exhaust lagging, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, friction materials); none is documented aboard this hull.

    Limitations
Class/program context, not a hull record; the source page could not be fetched this session (navsource.org/.net blocked by egress policy), so even the class description is unverified here. The inference narrows, rather than supports, asbestos scope; it cannot establish presence, absence, quantity, or any individual exposure aboard YMS-395/Linnet.

    Finding
No qualifying asbestos litigation located at any stage (pleading, discovery, trial, or judgment) naming YMS-395, USS Linnet (AMS-24), or MSC(O)-24. Classification of all hits: (a) the single hull-designation opinion hit, Wave Form Systems, Inc. v. AMS Sales Corp. (D. Minn. 2014), is a name collision on 'AMS'; (b) the two 'Linnet' + navy opinion hits, City and County of San Francisco v. EPA (U.S. 2025) and Pitney v. Kelly (N.J. Tax Ct. 1943), are name/term collisions with no vessel; (c) the 55 RECAP hits for the AMS-24 variant are tokenization collisions on 'AMS'/'24' (commercial, consumer, and bankruptcy dockets); the exact-phrase RECAP query without 'AMS-24' returned 0; (d) the 34 RECAP 'Linnet AND asbestos' hits (e.g., W.R. Grace & Co., D. Del. Bankr. 01-01139; OldCo/Coltec, W.D.N.C. Bankr. 17-30140) are large dockets where 'Linnet' and 'asbestos' co-occur across unrelated documents - other litigation / name collision, none referencing this vessel. The name Linnet is shared with AM-76 (different hull); no hit referenced either Linnet vessel.

    Limitations
CourtListener indexes published opinions and RECAP federal dockets only; state-court asbestos filings, settled claims, and bankruptcy-trust claims are largely invisible to it. RECAP hits were classified from case captions/docket metadata, not by opening each document; none of the captions involves a vessel. Absence of a located case does not prove no claim was ever filed; a complaint, had one been found, would rank only as an allegation.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, materials manifest, yard work order, or medical/litigation document naming YMS-395, Linnet (AMS-24), or MSC(O)-24 was found in the public sources searched.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard; equally, the wooden-hulled diesel type narrows plausible asbestos scope relative to steam ships. Several authoritative sources (live NHHC pages, NavSource, Wayback) were unreachable from this session, so the search was narrower than intended. Does not establish or defeat any exposure or eligibility claim.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Archival lead (not retrieved): wartime deck logs would be filed under 'YMS-395' and post-February-1947 logs under 'Linnet'. Deck logs record movements, operations, and yard/availability periods and could identify maintenance windows (e.g., the 1957 Philadelphia decommissioning, the 1959 reactivation for Naval Reserve training), but they are not materials records. Yard work packages for those periods, if extant, would be in Bureau of Ships records (RG 19) - unsurveyed.
