- DANFS record for this hull: originally planned as Grayson, renamed Livermore 23 December 1938; laid down 6 March 1939 by Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine; launched 3 August 1940; commissioned 7 October 1940. Neutrality patrol from 29 April 1941 (Iceland convoy escort; on convoy duty with Kearny (DD-432) when Kearny was torpedoed 17 October; temporary grounding in a storm 24 November). First transatlantic escort mission from New York 7 April 1942; coastal patrol and Caribbean convoy duty after 27 June; off Mehdia, French Morocco, 9 November 1942 for the North African invasion (antisubmarine, antiaircraft, fire support). Patrol off Recife, Brazil, then five New York-Casablanca voyages; Mediterranean from January 1944 - Anzio beachhead from 5 March, Oran-Naples convoy runs, southern France landings 16 August (hit by shore battery at Cavallaire Bay, damage slight). Overhaul at New York Navy Yard from 26 October 1944; east-coast-Oran escort series through 29 May 1945. Pacific occupation duty: Japan 27 September 1945 escorting 98th Division transports; Saipan/Philippines/Wakayama voyages; Aleutians repatriation lift November-December 1945. Charleston, S.C., 18 January 1946; Naval Reserve Training Program, in commission in reserve 1 May 1946; decommissioned and 'in service' 24 January 1947 (6th Naval District; reassigned 1st Naval District 15 March 1949); grounded off southern Cape Cod 30 July 1949, refloated next day; out of service and inactivated at Boston 15 May 1950. Struck from the Naval Vessel Register 19 July 1956; hull used for spare parts and experimental purposes anchored off Indian Head, Md., 1956 to late 1958; sold 3 March 1961 to Potomac Shipwrecking Co., Pope's Creek, Md.; towed away for scrapping 17 April 1961. Three battle stars for World War II.

- Limitations
- DANFS documents identity, builder, specifications, service history, and disposition - it contains no materials or asbestos content. The five-voyage NY-Casablanca series is dated 'from 14 April to 17 January 1943' in the DANFS text while the narrative places Mediterranean arrival in January 1944 - carried in gaps rather than silently reconciled. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

- Limitations
- Specification block only - no asbestos content. Wartime figures differ from the DANFS design block (1,690 t, 33 kt, complement 208, draft 11'10"); both conventions recorded, discrepancy carried rather than reconciled.

[4]Benson/Gleaves class technical data (4 superheated Babcock & Wilcox boilers, geared turbines, ~50,000 shp; 1938-43 construction era) + Atlas shipyard dataset, Bath Iron Works record (1942 Drinker pipe-covering-shop industrial-hygiene study, PMID 21016030; OSHA inspection 101450294 (1987); Austin v. - Finding
- Era/yard inference: this hull is a Gleaves-subclass member of the Benson/Gleaves machinery family - 4 superheated boilers (575 psi/700F per BuShips Ships' Data 1945 for the class) driving geared turbines at ~50,000 shp - built 1939-40 at the peak Navy asbestos era. Period-standard applications: boiler casing and fireroom insulation, steam-pipe and turbine lagging, valve/flange gaskets and packing, fireproofing, deck coverings. Builder Bath Iron Works is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (tier 2), including a 1942 Harvard/Drinker industrial-hygiene study finding 'fairly serious dust risk' in pipe-covering shops.

- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - nothing in this row establishes that any specific asbestos product was installed aboard DD-429, in what quantity, or that any individual was exposed. The 1942 Drinker study documents yard shop conditions, not this hull. NARA GIB retrieval not performed.

- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull located: "USS Livermore" opinion search returned 0 hits; "U.S.S. Livermore"/"aboard the Livermore"/"aboard Livermore" opinion search returned 0 hits; "USS Livermore"/"U.S.S. Livermore" RECAP docket search returned 0 hits; "DD-429"/"DD 429" opinion search returned 1 hit that is a docket-number collision (State Exchange Bank of Lake City v. Puig, Fla. App. docket No. DD-429, 1977 - not the ship). A contextual 'Livermore AND asbestos' opinion sweep returned 16 hits, none referencing the ship (all consistent with Livermore as surname/place/laboratory name collisions - e.g., railroad, GM brake, TMI, and successor-liability cases). Livermore is a single-ship name - DD-429 was the only commissioned USS Livermore - so exact-name coverage is close to exhaustive for indexed text.

- Limitations
- Sweep covers CourtListener-indexed opinion and RECAP docket text only; un-indexed dockets, state-court filings, and non-digitized records are outside coverage. Absence of located litigation does not mean none exists. One contextual query ('Livermore AND (navy OR destroyer OR vessel)') was rate-limit deferred - logged as blocked in the ledger.

- Finding
- Unexploited archival leads for hull-level material documentation: NARA RG19 General Information Books (per-vessel specifications historically capturing insulation/material schedules); deck logs; Boston Naval Shipyard inactivation records (out of service 15 May 1950); and whatever record survives of the hull's 1956-late-1958 use for 'spare parts and experimental purposes' anchored off Indian Head, Md. (Naval Ordnance Laboratory/Indian Head activity per DANFS). No digitized survey, abatement, or material-schedule document for this hull was located in public sources.
