- Finding
- Documented for this hull: laid down 1 April 1944 by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co., Manitowoc, Wis.; launched 13 August 1944 (sponsor Mrs. Barbara Fox); commissioned 9 February 1945, Cmdr. Ralph N. Metcalf. First war patrol Luzon Straits/South China Sea - hospital ship passed unharmed 11 June; 14 June bombardment of suspected radar installation at Gap Rock south of Hong Kong; lifeguard duty; 13 July five-torpedo attack in Semarang Roadstead; survived Lombok Straits shore-battery fire 14 July. Second patrol en route to Gulf of Siam when hostilities ended 15 August. Decommissioned at Mare Island Navy Yard into Pacific Reserve Fleet (NavSource dates 16 June 1946). Reclassified auxiliary submarine AGSS December 1962; reserve training submarine at Seattle, Wash. per DANFS (NavSource: Swan Island Naval Reserve Center, Portland, OR - variant in gaps) until relieved by RASHER (AGSS-269) 30 June 1967; struck from the Naval Vessel Register the same date; sold for scrap early 1969 (NavSource: 24 August 1969).

- Construction trades 1944-45 (Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co.); Mare Island inactivation trades (1946); crew (1945-1946); reserve-training personnel (1962-1967)
- Limitations
- Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. Yard-period asbestos disturbance is era inference, not a per-hull record. DANFS does not give the 1946 decommissioning date; NavSource supplies 16 June 1946.

- Limitations
- Secondary compilation, not an official record. Its Portland (Swan Island) reserve-training location conflicts with DANFS's 'Seattle, Wash.' - both carried, unresolved (Swan Island is in Portland on the Willamette River; a Seattle-based NRT assignment may reflect an earlier or alternate station).

- Finding
- A diesel-electric fleet boat built 1944-45 at Manitowoc sits inside the Navy's peak asbestos-use era. Diesel-electric boats carried no boilers/steam plant: era-consistent asbestos applications are diesel exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, galley/refrigeration insulation, and battery/electrical materials. Documented yard event for this hull: 1946 Mare Island Navy Yard inactivation - a second, limited asbestos-relevant work window.

[5]Batch-27 search ledger (this record): DANFS transcription; NavSource; NVR check; Google Scholar case-law sweep; CourtListener attempted; GAO product page [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-loggerhead-ss374-01 through -07
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying asbestos case naming USS Loggerhead (SS-374) was found. Google Scholar exact-name "USS Loggerhead" returned zero published-opinion hits; hull-number "SS-374" also returned zero hits - one of the batch's cleanest litigation sweeps. No NVR detail page extant for this hull. CourtListener sweeps blocked this session - public search UI bot-challenged (HTTP 202) and v4 API throttled (HTTP 429, shared 125/day quota); Google Scholar substituted for published opinions.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. Scholar covers published opinions only - RECAP/docket-level text was not searched (CourtListener blocked); an unresolved sweep limitation, logged in the ledger.
