DANFS record for this hull: Admirable-class minesweeper (dp. 630; 184'6" x 33' x 10'; 14.5 k.; cpl. 104; 1x3", 2x40mm, 2 dep., 1 dep. (h.h.), 2 dct.) laid down by American Shipbuilding Co., Lorain, Ohio, 27 October 1942; launched 10 April 1943; sponsored by Lt. (j.g.) Mary Erbenz, USCGR; commissioned 21 November [1943], Lt. S. H. Squibb in command. After a Great Lakes cruise, shakedown in Chesapeake Bay; departed Little Creek, Va., 25 January 1944 for South America, arriving Recife, Brazil, 4 March; twelve months operating out of Recife with Mine Division 31, sweeping the main shipping channels of South American ports, escorting convoys Brazil-Trinidad, harbor patrol, and antisubmarine training. Arrived Miami 12 March 1945, received 'an extensive overhaul,' resumed minesweeping exercises June, operated along the east coast through summer, returned Miami 15 August. 'Logic was transferred to the Republic of China 28 August 1945 under lend lease. Into 1969 she serves the Nationalist Chinese Navy as Yung Shun (MSF-44).'

    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and characteristics, not materials or asbestos content; the entry was written while the ship remained in ROC service (into 1969), so it does not record the 1970 striking or final disposition. The Miami 'extensive overhaul' is documented as an event but no facility is named - the only maintenance availability on this hull's record, and its yard is unidentified. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404 and the HyperWar DANFS mirror lacks AM-258.

NavSource is a volunteer-run archive reproducing official characteristics and NVR data; the propulsion row is not independently confirmed against a primary BuShips specification sheet - the Admirable-class builder/engine breakdown (AM-246 through AM-291 in the Cooper Bessemer GSB-8 group, consistent with same-yard sisters Jubilant AM-255 and Lance AM-257) supports Cooper Bessemer, while Wikipedia's ship infobox gives class-generic ALCO 539/Farrel-Birmingham (conflict logged in gaps). The '1,710shp' figure is the combined rating in NavSource's phrasing; class-level sources rate the GSB-8 at 855 shp each. Confirms machinery type only - says nothing about materials or asbestos content. Diesel plant means the steam-system insulation pathway (the Navy's major asbestos use per GAO) is largely absent by design; residual era materials are inference, not record. 'Struck from the Naval Register 1 June 1970' does not distinguish ROC Navy register striking from U.S. lend-lease file closure - ambiguity noted.

Builder context: the Lorain yard that built this hull began as Cleveland Shipbuilding (1886), relocated to Lorain in 1897, and was acquired by American Ship Building Co. in 1899, becoming its Lorain Division. AmShip was the largest Great Lakes shipbuilder by 1952 and ranked 21st among WWII government contractors (per BGSU GLMS-0075 collection history); the Lorain yard closed December 1983 and the company entered bankruptcy in 1993, sold off 1995. The yard built 17 Admirable-class minesweepers including this hull (AM-255 through AM-266 block plus AM-222 through AM-226 per class listings).

    Finding
GAO's program review of Navy asbestos exposure records the Navy's position that 'all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables' and that thermal insulation was 'the Navy's major use of asbestos aboard ships.' Era-level confirmation that WWII-built Navy hulls carried asbestos-containing components; for this diesel minesweeper the thermal-insulation pathway is largely absent by design, leaving the small-component uses (cable insulation, gaskets, clutch/brake linings, exhaust lagging) as the era-consistent candidates.

Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and emergency construction program under which this hull was built at American Ship Building Co., Lorain, in 1942-43. VA adjudication guidance (DVB Circular 21-88-8, carried into M21-1) likewise recites that chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite 'were used extensively in military ship construction' during WWII.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located in the sources searched: no asbestos survey, specification, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, court finding, or docketed asbestos case naming USS Logic / AM-258 / Yung Shun (AM-44 / MSF-44 / A-28) was found (see search_ledger). SCOPE LIMIT: the CourtListener litigation sweep could not be executed - the shared authenticated daily quota (2,800/day) was exhausted by parallel batch traffic for the entire session window (HTTP 429 across ~70 minutes of spaced probes, then a fresh window immediately re-exhausted, ~10.7h to next reset). Staged queries ('USS Logic,' 'U.S.S. Logic,' 'aboard USS Logic,' 'aboard the Logic,' 'AM-258,' 'AM 258,' 'Logic'+'minesweeper,' 'Logic'+asbestos, 'Yung Shun') are recorded unexecuted in sl-05/sl-06. VA BVA index search returned no decision naming this hull; law-firm listicle coverage naming this hull exists but is excluded per source rules (not evidence).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942-43 combatant hull is era-consistent with asbestos-containing components, and the hull's thin documented maintenance history (one named overhaul event at Miami, facility unidentified; lend-lease transfer 1945; ROC service to 1970; unknown disposition) means the phases where such records would exist are simply unmapped. The litigation sweep specifically is incomplete: CourtListener was quota-blocked, so docketed litigation naming this hull cannot be ruled out from this session's work. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.

    Finding
Source conflict resolved: Wikipedia's ship infobox gives the commissioning date as '21 November 1944' and propulsion as '2 x ALCO 539 diesel engines ... Farrel-Birmingham single reduction gear.' DANFS, NavSource's hull-specific spec block, and uboat.net all fix commissioning at 21 November 1943 - consistent with the April 1943 launch and the documented 25 January 1944 departure for South America (a November 1944 commissioning is incompatible with twelve months of Recife operations ending March 1945). The Admirable-class engine breakdown places AM-258 in the Cooper Bessemer GSB-8 / National Supply Co. group (AM-246 through AM-291), matching NavSource and same-yard sisters Jubilant (AM-255) and Lance (AM-257); Wikipedia's ALCO 539/Farrel-Birmingham is the class-generic infobox value for the other engine group. 1943 commissioning and Cooper Bessemer carried; the Wikipedia variants are not adopted.

The Lorain yard built this hull in the AM-255-AM-266 block; a hull-level drawing or specification set for AM-258, if present in the collection, could resolve the materials questions the public record does not.
