  1. [1]O'Connell v. Foster Wheeler Energy Corp., 544 F. Supp. 2d 51, No. 08-10078-RGS (D. Mass. Apr. 7, 2008) (Stearns, J.) [court_record]
    Locator
Opinion factual recital (plaintiff's alleged exposure 'while working on the USS Long Beach and other ships' at Fore River Shipyard 1960-61)
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
District-court memorandum and order on plaintiff's motion for remand recites that plaintiff William A. O'Connell alleged he was exposed to asbestos while working on the USS Long Beach and other ships at the Fore River Shipyard in 1960-1961, and was later diagnosed with mesothelioma. The action was removed to federal court; the remand motion was denied (federal-officer/MDL-875 posture). The recited window coincides with this hull's construction and fitting-out at Fore River (laid down December 1957, commissioned September 1961).

    1960-1961 (alleged exposure); 2008 (opinion)
    Population
Fore River Shipyard worker 1960-61; mesothelioma
    Limitations
Pleading-stage allegation only: the opinion decides jurisdiction/remand and recites the claimed exposure - it makes no finding that asbestos products were aboard this hull, identifies no product, and adjudicates nothing. USS Long Beach appears in a list of ships worked on; no Long Beach-specific exposure quantum is stated. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

  2. [2]DANFS, Long Beach III (CG(N)-9), Vol. 4 p. 138 (builder, dates, first nuclear surface warship service narrative, modernization, recycling program; verbatim transcription - live NHHC page serves 404) [nhhc_danfs]

    Finding
DANFS record for this hull: originally ordered as CLG(N)-160, reclassified CG(N)-160 in early 1957 and again as CG(N)-9 (transcription gives 1 July 1957; NavSource gives 1 July 1958 - see gaps); laid down 2 December 1957 by Bethlehem Steel Co., Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, Mass.; launched 14 July 1959; commissioned 9 September 1961 - the first nuclear-powered surface warship in history (first CO Eugene P. Wilkinson, previously first CO of USS Nautilus). Atlantic Fleet flagship duties including review by President Kennedy; overhaul and new equipment at Philadelphia 1963; formed the first all-nuclear task group with Enterprise and Bainbridge May 1964 for Operation Sea Orbit (around-the-world cruise); transferred to the Pacific Fleet, homeported at her namesake Long Beach March 1966; PIRAZ station Vietnam deployments from November 1966; shot down two MiGs over North Vietnam with Talos missiles May-June 1968 at ~65 nautical miles; extensively modernized at Puget Sound 6 October 1980 - 26 March 1983; rescheduled for retirement when FY93 upgrade plans were dropped; slated to enter the Navy's nuclear-powered ship recycling program at Puget Sound.

    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content; the nuclear propulsion entries establish nothing about asbestos - secondary auxiliary systems are the only exposure-relevant plant and are not described. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404. The supplement's 'in commission, in reserve 2 July 1995' conflicts with NavSource's decommissioned/stricken 1 May 1995 and 2 July 1994 deactivation ceremony - see gaps.

  3. [3]NAVSEA official article, 'NHPA commenting period for the ex-Long Beach (CGN 9) now open' (navsea.navy.mil) [other_primary]
    Locator
NAVSEA article text (decommissioned 1995; moored PSNS&IMF awaiting final disposition; NVHE ineligible; NHPA comment period)
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
Official Navy record of current status: ex-Long Beach was decommissioned in 1995 and is currently moored at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility awaiting final disposition; the Navy's Naval Vessel Historical Evaluation determined the ship ineligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places; an NHPA public commenting period was opened on that determination. Secondary disposal-path detail (NavSource/Wikipedia): superstructure and nuclear reactor recycled at Puget Sound 25 September 2002; remaining hull auctioned to Tacoma Metals July 2012; a ~423-foot propulsion-block section remained moored at PSNS as of 2018.

    Limitations
NAVSEA article documents custody, historic evaluation, and disposition process only - it contains no asbestos survey, hazmat, or materials disclosure. The recycling-path dates come from secondary sources (NavSource/Wikipedia), not the NAVSEA article; NRHP ineligibility does not speak to materials present.

  4. [4]DANFS specifications block + Atlas shipyard dataset, Bethlehem Shipbuilding/Fore River yard records + documented availabilities (Philadelphia 1963; Puget Sound 1980-83; NNSB superstructure removal 1994-95 per secondary sources) [other_primary]
    Locator
DANFS specifications block and yard-period narrative; shipyards.json records; O'Connell recital (ev-01) places an alleged asbestos worker aboard this hull at Fore River 1960-61
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era inference, nuclear-boat framing: the twin C1W reactor plant establishes nothing about asbestos exposure. Any asbestos relevance is confined to secondary steam and auxiliary systems - auxiliary piping, valve gaskets and packing, fireproofing, deck coverings - aboard a hull built 1957-61 at the Fore River/Bethlehem yard in the documented asbestos-insulation era. Documented disturbance periods for those systems: Philadelphia overhaul/new equipment 1963; Puget Sound modernization 1980-83; deactivation and superstructure removal 1994-95; reactor recycling and partial-hull disposal at Puget Sound 2002+.

    Limitations
Class/era and yard-period inference only, and limited to non-reactor systems - the ship-specific record for this hull is the O'Connell pleading (ev-01). This row must not be read as an independent ship-specific finding and does not establish that asbestos products were or remain aboard; nuclear propulsion is not evidence either of asbestos presence or absence.

    Finding
No qualifying non-litigation ship-specific asbestos record located: no hull ACM survey, abatement contract, disposal hazmat disclosure (including for the reactor-recycling and superstructure-removal work), NVR detail page (ship-detail pages login-gated), or museum record with asbestos data was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The O'Connell pleading (ev-01) is the only ship-specific asbestos-related record.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the Navy's ship-recycling documentation does not publish ACM detail for this hull. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
