Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding construction trades 1942-43; wartime crew (design complement 273; ~291 aboard at loss per secondary sources)
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Live NHHC DANFS page returns 404 on every URL pattern probed (longshaw.html, longshaw-dd-559.html) on 2026-09-27; verbatim HyperWar/ibiblio transcription cited. DANFS does not name the U.S. ships that fired the destroying gunfire/torpedoes and gives no striking date.

WDR-51 Section II loss table (Magazine Explosion / direct hit); paragraphs 2-57 and 11-19
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Official BuShips engineering analysis names this hull three times: the loss table lists 'LONGSHAW (DD559) 2050T Gunfire Okinawa 5/18/45' under 'C. Magazine Explosion - 5 Losses / a. On direct hit'; paragraph 2-57 states 'At Okinawa, LONGSHAW (DD559) was lost due to an explosion of 5-inch powder in her forward magazines initiated apparently by a powder fire following a direct hit from an enemy shore battery'; paragraph 11-19 cites LONGSHAW among hulls where a powder-magazine explosion 'demolished the whole end of the ship.' This is the Navy's own postwar technical determination of the loss mechanism.

    Population
Longshaw crew at loss (86 dead incl. CO per DANFS); BuShips analysis audience (damage control/engineering)
    Limitations
The report analyzes ammunition behavior and structural loss, not shipboard materials or asbestos; it confirms the loss mechanism and that no hull survey/recovery documentation regime followed (the hull was expendable ordnance-destroyed). Does not identify asbestos content, quantities, or exposure.

cl-auth-search.py helper output: fleet-wide request budget momentarily spent; stand-down guidance
    Finding type

    Finding
CourtListener sweep status: no litigation hit is classified because the authenticated helper returned the fleet-wide short pacing stand-down on every attempt (four calls across the session, spanning opinion and docket indexes) before returning search results. The sweep remains incomplete and is not a negative finding for qualifying asbestos litigation.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era/class inference: a WWII Fletcher-class destroyer built 1942-43 with a four-boiler/60,000-shp steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos boiler and steam-line insulation, turbine lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings - an application class documented at class level in the Atlas Fletcher-class profile. Builder Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Co. (Seattle) is NOT an Atlas shipyards.json yard_id - no yard-level Atlas record exists to carry; the missing yard is logged in gaps. NARA RG19 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications are an unretrieved archival lead for hull-level specs.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding; no materials list, insulation schedule, or ACM record for this hull was located. Hull destroyed 1945-05-18: machinery maker for this hull unverified (class design commonly cites GE geared turbines; NavSource attributes Westinghouse to some Fletcher hulls - this hull's attribution unresolved).

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - placing DD-559's construction (1942-43) and its entire commissioned life (Dec 1943 - May 1945) squarely inside the documented asbestos-use era.

    search_ledger rows sl-uss-longshaw-dd559-01 through sl-uss-longshaw-dd559-09
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DD-559: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, materials inventory, or docketed case naming the hull was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was destroyed in action on 18 May 1945 and expended; it never entered a postwar, reserve, museum, transfer, or scrapping phase, so the channels that generated ship-specific asbestos records for surviving hulls (abatement contracts, museum disclosures, donation-condition hazmat terms, scrapping-yard records) never operated for this vessel.

    2026-09-27
    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-standard applications are documented at class/era level and the GAO record places the hull inside the Navy's asbestos-use era. The hull's destruction means no present-day ACM question exists; crew-era documentation (if any) would sit in NARA construction/loss-report files not retrieved here.

  9. [9]NARA archival-lead identification (program level): RG 24 WWII deck logs; RG 38 WWII action reports / ship loss reports; RG 19 Bureau of Ships records incl. 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications [other_primary]
    Locator
catalog.archives.gov (API unreachable 2026-09-27); NARA RG 24/38/19 holding pattern
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Ship-specific archival leads identified but not retrieved: WWII deck logs and the loss/action reports underlying War Damage Report No. 51's Longshaw entry (surviving officers' reports quoted in secondary literature) are the type of holdings that would carry crew, work-history, and damage-detail evidence; BuShips per-vessel material specification files (General Information Books) are the hull-level materials lead. The NARA catalog API was unreachable during the session, so file-unit-level hits could not be enumerated.

    Population
    Wartime crew; NARA researchers
    Limitations
Archival-lead status only - existence of file units for this hull is inferred from the standard NARA holding pattern for commissioned WWII destroyers, not confirmed by catalog retrieval. Contents may or may not contain materials/asbestos information.
