    Finding
DANFS documents this hull: laid down by Wilmington Boat Works Inc., Wilmington, Calif., 1951-11-09; launched 1953-11-22 (sponsor Mrs. William L. Horton); commissioned 1954-06-11, Lt. E. W. 2. [2]Wineland v. Air & Liquid Systems Corp., 539 F. Supp. 3d 1149 (W.D. Wash. 2021) - Order Granting Crane Co.'s Motion for Summary Judgment (Dkt. #304), Lasnik, J. [court_record]
    Locator
539 F. Supp. 3d at 1155-57 (product identification and causation analysis); Cause No. C19-0793RSL, Dkt. #304
    Finding type
    litigation_product_id
    Finding
Published federal opinion recites that relevant naval records, as interpreted and summarized by plaintiffs' expert Captain Arnold Moore, show Crane supplied globe, check, and swing valves installed on the USS DYNAMIC, USS LOYALTY, and USS ESTEEM in or before 1953, and that manufacturer drawings of the globe valves depict seals made of compressed asbestos sheet gaskets and braided asbestos packing. The court also noted evidence that the decedent was exposed to significant levels of asbestos dust while working in the engine rooms of those vessels. Crane Co.'s motion for summary judgment was GRANTED - plaintiffs did not produce evidence of substantial exposure attributable to Crane products.

    Limitations
Summary-judgment-stage record: product-installation and asbestos-content statements are the court's recitation of the plaintiffs' evidentiary showing viewed in their favor, not a merits finding; the defendant prevailed on causation grounds. Does not establish that any individual was exposed, does not quantify material, and does not establish what (if anything) remained aboard at any time. Finding
Unpublished order recites evidence that distilling-plant pumps aboard the DYNAMIC, LOYALTY, and ESTEEM were provided by Warren Pumps; that the distilling plants were located in the forward engine room of the three vessels; and that each distilling plant included three pumps and utilized asbestos pump shaft packing and compressed asbestos sheet gaskets. Order also fixes the decedent's Loyalty service as September 1970 to July 1972. Warren Pumps' motion for summary judgment was GRANTED.

    Finding
Unpublished order recites evidence that Imo Industries' predecessor, DeLaval Steam Turbine, Inc., manufactured lube-oil pumps for use in the aft engine room of the LOYALTY, and lube-oil transfer pumps for the TUSCALOOSA. IMO's motion for summary judgment was GRANTED - no evidence that the decedent was involved in or proximal to maintenance of those pumps, or that any exposure was substantial.

    Finding type

    Finding
Docketed asbestos personal-injury case: plaintiffs alleged John Dale Wineland was exposed to asbestos in engine-room machinery (diesel engines, pumps, air compressors, valves) while serving aboard USS DYNAMIC (1963-1966), USS PLEDGE (1966-1967), USS LOYALTY (1970-1972), USS TUSCALOOSA (1972-1974), and USS ESTEEM (1978-1980); he developed mesothelioma and died in 2018. Every located defendant order was resolved in the defendants' favor at summary judgment on maritime-law causation grounds. The 1970-1972 service window matches MSO-457's in-service period; the first Loyalty (AMc-88) was decommissioned in 1945, so the named hull is this vessel - not a name collision.

    Limitations
Allegation-to-disposition summary across multiple orders; all claims adjudicated to defendants at summary judgment - the vessel naming is verified, the alleged exposure aboard this hull was never proven. Defendant product lists vary by order; this row does not add product identifications beyond ev-02/03/04.

    Finding
Aggressive-class ocean minesweepers were designed to counter North Korean mining during the Korean War and were capable of sweeping moored and bottom contact, magnetic, and acoustic mines; builders included Wilmington Boat Works; power plant four aluminum-block diesel engines, two shafts, ~2,400 bhp. NavSource's hull specification for Loyalty lists four Packard ID1700 diesel engines (both inboard engines later replaced), two shafts, two controllable-pitch propellers - i.e., a diesel machinery plant, not a steam plant, consistent with the diesel engine-room work described in the Wineland record.

    Limitations
Class/design context plus a volunteer-archive hull spec; neither source addresses asbestos. Diesel propulsion lowers (but does not eliminate) the era-typical asbestos footprint versus steam plants - gaskets, packing, and machinery insulation were still era-typical asbestos applications. Not ship-specific asbestos documentation.

NavSource records Loyalty struck from the Naval Register 1 July 1972 and sold for scrap 15 January 1974 by the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service to Robert D. Perry of Vallejo, CA for $32,223. Shipbuildinghistory.com's Wilmington Boat Works yard table independently lists Loyalty (MSO 457), U.S. Navy minesweeper, 1954 - 'Scrapped 1973.'

    Limitations
NavSource is the standard volunteer-maintained archive compiling NVR data cards - not itself an official publication; the sale detail (buyer, price) was not independently confirmed against an NVR card image. Disposal-date discrepancy unresolved: NavSource sale 1974-01-15 vs. secondary sources' 'disposed December 1973' / 'scrapped 1973' (transfer-to-disposal vs. sale-date difference likely). No asbestos content.

    Finding
No asbestos survey, abatement contract, donation/transfer hazmat disclosure, or exposure documentation outside the Wineland litigation record was located. The hull was scrapped in 1973-74, before modern ACM survey regimes, so absence of such records is expected rather than informative. CourtListener API ship-name and hull-number sweep could not be executed this session (shared daily quota exhausted, HTTP 429); litigation was located via Google Scholar and web index screening - only the Wineland case names this vessel.

    Limitations
Absence of a located survey/abatement record does not prove absence of asbestos - the litigation record itself recites evidence of asbestos-containing components aboard. The CourtListener gap means a complete docket-level name-collision screen (opinions + RECAP) remains pending; Scholar/web screening found no other qualifying case.
