Brown Ship Building Co. construction workforce and commissioning crew
    Limitations
Establishes construction and commissioning identity; the page does not document asbestos, insulation composition, hazmat condition, exposure, or causation. NavSource is a volunteer compilation drawing on Turner Publishing's LSM-LSMR Amphibious Forces Vol. II (1997) for this hull's history extract - the strongest available public source for this hull, as no DANFS entry exists.

    Finding
During World War II, USS LSM-102 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater with LSM Flotilla Nine (CDR D. L. Francis, USN), as flagship of LSM Group Twenty-Six (LCDR L. Brouwer, USN), LSM Division Fifty-One. International radio call sign NVHT. The awards display lists the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Navy Occupation Service Medal (Asia clasp) - no battle stars. Contributed photographs place the ship in the Russell Islands (date unknown) and at Leyte in September 1945. Commanding officers: Lt. Sidney C. Schoenberger, USNR (9 Nov 1944 - Dec 1945); Lt.(jg) Frederick C. Von Dollen, USNR (Dec 1945 - Aug 1946); Ens. Alfred W. Lehman, USNR (Aug 1946 - 31 Oct 1946).

    Finding
Following World War II, LSM-102 performed occupation service in the Far East during the periods 20 September - 5 October 1945 and 19 October 1945 - 29 March 1946 (Navy Occupation Service Medal windows). LSM-102 does not appear on the official NHHC list of Allied ships present in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945 (archived copy reviewed; 13 LSMs are listed, including sister LSM-101, but not LSM-102) - consistent with the hull page's Leyte, September 1945 photograph and the 20 September start of her occupation window.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
LSM-102 was decommissioned 31 October 1946 and laid up in the Reserve Fleet; NavSource states the date of striking from the Naval Register is unknown. She was transferred to Greece on 3 November 1958 and renamed HS Ipopliarchos Toyrnas (L-162). Final disposition per the hull page: struck by the Greek Navy, hulk retained for cannibalization. U.S. Navy/Defense Imagery photographs document the ex-LSM-102 afloat in Greek service as late as 31 August 1979, moored at Salamis Naval Base among seven other ex-U.S. amphibious ships (VIRIN DN-SC-82-00333, by PHC C. Pedrick, USN); a circa-1969 photo (NH 97466, U.S. Naval Historical Center collections) shows her stern, and contributor photos show her under way circa 1971 and beached during a 1972 Greek Army exercise. Shipbuilding History's U.S. Navy LSM table corroborates: 'LSM-102 | Brown SB | Houston TX | 9 Nov 1944 | laid up 1946, to Greece 1958 as L-162.'

The strike date and post-cannibalization fate are undocumented; Greek-service details rest on NavSource captions and the SBH secondary table. Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos survey, product inventory, abatement record, or condition report was located. Because LSM-102 was a WWII U.S. Navy diesel landing ship with a direct-drive Fairbanks Morse plant and no steam system, the boiler/turbine lagging pathway does not apply; possible class/era application categories drawn from the Navy's own GAO-documented list are machinery and piping thermal insulation, diesel exhaust insulation, gaskets, packing, electrical insulation/cabling, and deck covering - none of which is documented aboard this hull.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - not a finding that asbestos was installed aboard LSM-102. No quantity, location, manufacturer, condition, individual exposure, or causation is established. Diesel propulsion is documented; the absence of a steam plant removes the boiler/turbine pathway but says nothing affirmative about other materials.

    Finding type
    gov_survey
    Finding
GAO HRD-80-2 (18 October 1979) reproduces a Navy CNO enclosure stating that 'thermal insulation for machinery, equipment and piping systems has been the major application of asbestos' aboard Navy ships and that asbestos is used on Navy ship decks, in Navy galley ranges' electrical cabling and electronic equipment resistors, in piping-system gaskets and packing 'throughout' Navy shipboard piping systems, and in Navy ship equipment brakes and clutches; the enclosure states all ships then in service contained some quantity of asbestos and that ships were delivered with asbestos thermal insulation as late as May 1978. The report's digest notes recently constructed ships have little or no asbestos thermal insulation and that Navy measurements showed operating ships with asbestos insulation at or below 0.1 fibers per cubic centimeter airborne.

U.S. Navy shipbuilding, repair, and shipboard personnel; 1979 program review
    Limitations
Navy program-level documentation. The report does not name LSM-102 or the LSM-1 class, and its fieldwork yards were Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards - not this hull's builder. It supplies no hull-specific quantity, survey, condition, individual exposure, or causation evidence and cannot be upgraded to a ship-specific asbestos finding.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located for LSM-102: the live NavSource hull page, the DANFS amphibious index (no entry exists for this hull), the archived NHHC Tokyo Bay list, NARA Special List No. 44 (which contains no LSM-hull entries at all), the Shipbuilding History build table, and the secondary web sweep contain no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, product inventory, or exposure finding naming this hull.

    Limitations
A negative public-source finding is not proof that asbestos was absent. The CourtListener hull-number sweep completed as a negative (see ev-uss-lsm-102-lsm102-09), but the NARA catalog is JavaScript-rendered and unverifiable this session, and undigitized Navy, reserve-fleet, MAP-transfer, and Hellenic Navy records may contain additional evidence. Asbestos documentation therefore remains class_or_era.

    Finding
Authenticated CourtListener sweep for the exact hull designation completed with a litigation negative: opinion search (type=o, "LSM-102") returned HTTP 200 count 0 - no published opinion in CourtListener's index names this hull; docket/RECAP search (type=r, "LSM-102") returned HTTP 200 count 1, and the single hit is a name collision: a claims-schedule exhibit (docket entry 12199, attachment 4, 'Exhibit B - No Liability Benefit Continuation Claims') inside In re Tribune Media Company, Chapter 11, Bankr. Limitations
Covers CourtListener's published-opinion and RECAP/docket indexes for the exact hull string only. The exact-phrase variant 'USS LSM-102' was not completed before the pacing gate re-closed (a phrase-subset of the completed search - minor residual gap). A pleading-stage or unpublished filing in a repository outside CourtListener's indexes would not appear; this does not prove no litigation has ever named the hull.
