    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-powered LSM-1-class landing ship built Oct-Dec 1944 sits inside the documented WWII shipbuilding asbestos era; era-standard applications aboard a diesel amphibious ship of this type and period were thermal insulation, machinery and diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and fireproofing in the confined hull and machinery spaces. As a direct-drive diesel ship she carried no boiler or steam-turbine plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, but the confined machinery-space exposure dynamic documented for marine engine rooms applies.

    Limitations
Era/policy-level documentation, not a hull record - LSM-118 and Brown Shipbuilding are not named in the abstract; the source documents that asbestos fireproofing/insulation was standard in 1940s shipbuilding, not its presence aboard this specific hull. Program/engineering-level documentation from NTIS metadata and abstract; the report does not name LSM-118 or any WWII amphibious ship - it establishes asbestos as a documented engine-room material aboard marine vessels of the era class, not aboard this hull. Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LSM-118 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener searches of the exact designation '"LSM-118"' returned zero published opinions (type=o) and zero dockets (type=r), both verified this session. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material for LSMs generally is law-firm marketing content asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. CourtListener coverage: both the opinion index (type=o) and the docket index (type=r, incl. RECAP) returned 0 for '"LSM-118"' - a real negative within that index's coverage only; state-court and non-RECAP PACER filings are outside it. Deck logs, builder records (Rice), and any Foss conversion records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
