- Limitations
- NavSource is a privately maintained naval-history archive; its narrative for this hull is explicitly credited to a 1997 Turner Publishing commercial unit-history compilation, not an NHHC-authored primary record. No independent corroborating primary source (DANFS, NARA, NVR) was located for cross-verification - see negative-finding row below. Contains no asbestos, materials, or condition information; supports identity and service history only.

- Establishes that this class had no boiler plant (diesel-direct propulsion); supports the class/era asbestos-application inference row below by ruling out boiler/turbine lagging as the relevant system type. Contains no asbestos or insulation-material statement itself.

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during World War II, the era and wartime production environment in which LSM-260 was built (laid down April 1944) and under which steam and diesel machinery insulation, exhaust lagging, gaskets, and packing were commonly manufactured with asbestos fiber nationwide.

- Population
- WWII shipyard workers and small-combatant crews (class context)
- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel, this builder, or diesel-plant systems specifically, and does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. LSM-260 had no boiler plant (see ev-02); any asbestos-relevant systems would be diesel exhaust/machinery lagging, gaskets, packing, and electrical insulation, not boiler/turbine lagging.

- Finding
- National Archives guidance confirms that Record Group 19 (Records of the Bureau of Ships) holds general correspondence series for 1940-1961, arranged by the Navy Filing Manual (4th ed. 1941, 5th ed. 1950) and including correspondence between the Bureau of Ships and specific private building yards (filed under 'QM/[yard name]'), as an unsurveyed archival path for builder/construction-period documentation potentially touching LSM-260 and Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co.

- Limitations
- This is a NARA finding-aid/research-guide page, not a document about LSM-260 itself; no box-level or entry-level search of RG 19 was performed and no spend was authorized. Existence of any asbestos-specific or hull-specific document within this record group for LSM-260 or her builder is unknown until surveyed in person.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming LSM-260 was found. Direct checks of the Naval History and Heritage Command site returned 404 for LSM-260 under both hull-number DANFS URL conventions (no individual DANFS entry exists for this hull - consistent with DANFS coverage of bare-numbered LSMs generally being limited to hulls later renamed). The Naval Vessel Register (NVR) online ship-detail page for LSM-260 returned no ship-specific data. No NARA catalog record, photograph, or post-1947 commercial-career record was located for this hull.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard this hull historically - diesel-era small combatants of this period are era-consistent with asbestos-containing machinery insulation and gaskets. Does not establish presence or absence of asbestos, exposure, or legal eligibility for any claim.

- Finding
- CourtListener searched (via the batch's required authenticated helper script) by exact name 'USS LSM-260', bare hull number 'LSM-260', hull number plus 'asbestos', and post-Navy owner 'Patton-Tully' plus 'asbestos', across opinion and docket/RECAP indexes. All hits returned were text-string collisions unrelated to this vessel (e.g., an unrelated Texas oil-and-gas appellate opinion matching 'LSM-260' as case-internal text; unrelated finance, tort, and criminal dockets; unrelated corporate asbestos-defendant opinions for 'Patton-Tully' text matches). No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull, by name or hull number, was located.

- Limitations
- Absence of a CourtListener hit does not prove no litigation exists - CourtListener's opinion/RECAP coverage is incomplete for older or unpublished state-court matters, and a small, bare-numbered, non-notable hull sold out of service in 1947 is less likely to generate indexed, searchable litigation under its hull number alone. Does not establish or defeat any exposure or legal claim.
