    Finding
NavSource's live USS LSM-266 page states that the LSM-1-class vessel was laid down 31 May 1944 at Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Newark, New Jersey; launched 3 July 1944; and commissioned 29 July 1944. It places the ship with LSM Flotilla Five, LSM Group Thirteen, and LSM Division Twenty-Six; lists the Iwo Jima operation (19 February-16 March 1945), Far East occupation service (19 November-1 December 1945), decommissioning on 13 June 1946, strike in 1946, and sale on 19 November 1947 to Hugo Bros. Inc. It also lists a complement of 5 officers and 54 enlisted and two Fairbanks Morse diesel engines.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-compiled archive, not the underlying Navy, NARA, or NVR record; all chronology and specification claims in this row are therefore marked partial pending primary corroboration. The page contains no asbestos, insulation, hazardous-material, or exposure statement.

Report text at discussion of thermal insulation and shipboard piping-system gaskets and packing; live URL returned HTML rather than the PDF in this environment
    Finding type
    gov_survey
    Finding
GAO's Navy-wide 1979 review describes asbestos thermal insulation for machinery, equipment, and piping systems, and asbestos-containing gaskets and packing in shipboard piping systems. It does not name USS LSM-266, identify an LSM-1-class vessel, or establish a product aboard this hull.

    Population
U.S. Navy ships and shipyard workers addressed in the 1979 GAO review
    Limitations
Navy-wide context only. The live GAO URL did not serve the PDF in this environment, and the report does not identify LSM-266. It does not establish any asbestos-containing product, quantity, location, condition, exposure, causation, or legal eligibility for this hull.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA's asbestos research guide directs researchers investigating a particular U.S. naval vessel to Bureau of Ships Record Group 19 correspondence and General Information Books. This is an archival research path for USS LSM-266; no LSM-266 file was requested or reviewed.

    Population
Researchers examining U.S. naval-vessel asbestos records through 1961
    Limitations
The NARA guide is not a vessel history or evidence of asbestos aboard LSM-266. NARA says the guide is not comprehensive; no hull-specific correspondence, General Information Book, plan, survey, or disposal record was retrieved.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazardous-material disclosure, product inventory, or primary source identifying asbestos aboard USS LSM-266 was located in the bounded public-source review. Ship-specific asbestos documentation and asbestos presence aboard remain unknown.

    Limitations
This limited public-source search negative is not proof asbestos was absent. Ship-specific Navy and shipyard files, surveys, transfer records, disposal records, and any litigation not indexed or not searched because of the CourtListener stand-down were not reviewed. No product, quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation is established.
