- Locator
- GAO product page, Highlights
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO reviewed Navy efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, including use of asbestos in Navy ships, removal costs, and compensation programs. Its product-page summary states that the 1975 policy called for removing and replacing with nonasbestos material only insulation damaged or removed for necessary repairs; the policy was modified in 1979 for selective replacement in high-maintenance areas.

- Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyard workers; Navy asbestos-control program
- Limitations
- Navy/shipyard program context only. The report summary does not name USS LSM-274 and does not establish a component, quantity, removal event, asbestos presence, individual exposure, or causation for this hull.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, material list, or public asbestos litigation record naming USS LSM-274 was located in the sources searched for this record. This is a bounded research result, not proof that asbestos was absent from the vessel.

- Limitations
- CourtListener exact-name and exact-hull searches were not completed after the authenticated helper reported that the fleet-wide pacing budget was spent; Firecrawl reported a multi-hour keyless-quota stand-down. Absence of a located record does not establish absence of asbestos, defeat an exposure claim, or determine legal eligibility.

- Locator
- Beginning Research; General Information Books; Board of Inspection & Survey Reports; Cartographic Branch sections
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's naval-vessel asbestos research guide identifies RG 19 Bureau of Ships correspondence, amphibious-vessel General Information Books, RG 38 amphibious-vessel inspection reports, and RG 19 ship engineering drawings as potential research paths. It notes that S39 insulation-and-lagging and S48 piping drawings can be responsive, though relatively rare.
