- Finding
- USS LSM-285 was laid down 18 October 1944 at Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Newark, N.J.; launched 30 November 1944; and commissioned 14 December 1944 with LTjg. Russell P. Snyder, USNR, in command. During World War II she was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater as part of LSM Flotilla Eleven, LSM Group Thirty-Two, and LSM Division Sixty-Three. Following the war she was assigned to Occupation and China service in the Far East, earning the Navy Occupation Service Medal for 22 to 27 September 1945 and the China Service Medal (extended) for 28 September 1945 to 24 January 1946. She was decommissioned 20 June 1946 and transferred the same day to the Republic of China, renamed ROCS Mei Yi; struck from the Naval Register on a date NavSource lists as unknown; escaped capture by Communist forces in October 1949 by sailing to Taiwan; and was scrapped in 1973 by the Taiwanese Navy.

- Limitations
- Ship-specific historical timeline from a volunteer naval-history archive; the page does not document asbestos, an asbestos survey, or material quantities. NavSource states the Naval Register strike date was unknown.

- Program-level context, not a hull-specific finding. [6]Public-source and litigation sweep documented in this record's search ledger [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-lsm-285-lsm285-01 through -09
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or asbestos litigation record naming USS LSM-285 was located in the sources searched. CourtListener exact-name searches ('USS LSM-285') returned zero results for both opinions and dockets. A broader exact-phrase docket search on the bare hull number '"LSM-285"' returned 26 dockets, all of which are unrelated federal civil/criminal matters (e.g., prisoner civil-rights suits, an airline-industry class action, a federal criminal case) with no connection to this vessel, asbestos, or maritime claims; these are classified as name-collision noise on the bare numeral string, not litigation about this ship. This is a search result, not proof that asbestos was absent from the vessel.

- Limitations
- CourtListener exact-name and exact-hull searches were made through the authenticated helper for opinions and dockets; the fleet-wide pacing limiter required waiting and retrying between requests. The docket hits reviewed (first 20 of 26 case names) showed no vessel, Navy, or asbestos connection; the remaining 6 were not individually reviewed given the clear noise pattern. Firecrawl's hosted MCP was not available in this session (not configured), so Firecrawl was not used; WebSearch and WebFetch/curl were used as the fallback web-research path. Absence of a located record does not establish absence of asbestos or defeat any exposure claim.
