    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not an official Navy registry; it is used here because no DANFS/NHHC entry for this hull was located and the live NVR record could not be found. Establishes identity, construction, command, and disposition milestones only; contains no asbestos, material, or hazmat content and does not establish any individual exposure, causation, or legal eligibility. NavSource's own stricken-date field for this hull is blank/'unknown' - see ev-04 for the secondary-sourced stricken date.

Specification record used for identity, propulsion, and armament fields only; does not establish asbestos-containing materials, insulation specification, or exposure aboard this hull. As a diesel-propelled LSM-1-class hull, there is no boiler/turbine lagging pathway - any era-standard asbestos use would be in machinery insulation, gaskets, and packing (see class/era row).

    Limitations
Archival lead to a physical records box only - this finding aid does not itself reproduce the commissioning-file contents and was not reviewed beyond the indexed table entry. The 11/13/1944 date in this finding aid's 'commissioning date' column matches this hull's documented LAUNCH date rather than its 26 December 1944 commissioning date per NavSource and uboat.net; this is logged as an unresolved finding-aid field discrepancy, not adopted as a correction. No asbestos or material content.

Charleston Naval Shipyard photograph-collection item records (christening photo and companion War Bond launch-shield item)
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The Charleston Museum's photograph collection documents the christening of LSM-298 at the Charleston Navy Yard on 13 November 1944 (the same date as her launch): Mrs. Ethel Holbrook Moak broke a bottle of champagne on the bow to christen the ship, witnessed by Lieutenant F. M. Brown, matron of honor Mrs. W. B. Dickey, and Rear Admiral Jules James. Mrs. Moak was chosen for the honor as the wife of Thomas O. Moak, Sr., a chipper and caulker in the Shipfitter's Shop crew that built the ship; she was presented a silver commemorative plate on behalf of the yard workers by Chairman W. M. Zeigler of the Charleston Navy Yard's Central Shop Committee. A separate collection record states that when LSM-298 was launched she bore a large shield on her bow proclaiming that her construction was made possible by War Bond purchases of the citizens of six North Carolina counties - Macon, Mecklenburg, Mitchell, Montgomery, New Hanover, and Pamlico - one of ten 'Pacific Puddle Jumper' LSMs built by the Charleston Navy Yard with funds oversubscribed by 57 North Carolina counties during the Fifth War Loan Drive; a sister LSM launched the same day, LSM-299, bore the names of five further counties.

    Limitations
Direct automated fetch of these museum collection pages returned HTTP 403 on repeated attempts in this session; content is carried from consistent, independently-returned search-engine snippets of the live pages (two separate collection-item URLs, two separate queries, matching specific named individuals, photo object ID, and dates), not a direct page read - verification_status is marked partial on that basis. This is a construction/christening-ceremony and community War Bond-financing record; it contains no asbestos, material, or hazmat content and establishes no exposure, causation, or legal eligibility for any individual.

This DANFS entry is for a different hull (LSM-175, Oceanside); it is cited only to confirm the LSM-1 type/class designation and generic class dimensions, not as a ship-specific record for LSM-298. Direct fetch of the live history.navy.mil page failed with a TLS certificate-verification error in this session on every attempt; the quoted text is from a search-engine-indexed snippet of the live page. Finding
GAO reviewed the Navy's shipboard asbestos practices at two naval shipyards (Long Beach and Norfolk) and found that Navy ships of the WWII-and-after era used asbestos insulation extensively; the Navy's 1975 policy limited removal to damaged insulation or insulation that had to be removed for repairs, modified in 1979 to selectively remove asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas expected to need servicing during a ship's remaining service life.

Navy-wide program-level documentation, not hull-specific; fieldwork yards were Long Beach and Norfolk, neither of which is this hull's builder (Charleston). Four authenticated CourtListener API v4 searches - exact ship name "USS LSM-298" (opinion and docket) and exact hull number "LSM-298" (opinion and docket) - all returned HTTP 200 with zero indexed results. A supplementary general web search for "LSM-298" together with asbestos/mesothelioma/lawsuit terms likewise returned no qualifying hit naming this hull. No qualifying asbestos-litigation opinion or docket record was identified for this hull.

    Limitations
All four CourtListener searches ultimately completed (one initial attempt and one docket-exact-hull attempt were deferred by the fleet-wide pacing limiter and successfully retried later in the same session - logged in the search ledger, not treated as a negative result for those specific attempts). Zero results in indexed CourtListener material and in a general web sweep does not establish absence of unindexed, sealed, non-digitized, state-court, or differently-captioned litigation naming this hull; it is not a judicial finding about exposure or asbestos.
