Documented for this hull: laid down 1 March 1944 at Brown Shipbuilding Co., Houston, TX; launched 9 April 1944; commissioned USS LSM-3, 16 May 1944, LTjg. Douglas L. Adams, USNR, in command. During WWII assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater: LSM Flotilla One (LCDR H.B. Taliaferro, USN), LSM Group One (LCDR F.L. O'Leary, USNR), LSM Division One; participated in the Okinawa Gunto operation (assault and occupation, 8-30 June 1945), earning one battle star. Following WWII, assigned to occupation and China service in the Far East, 2 September-30 November 1945 (Navy Occupation Service Medal and China Service Medal (extended) periods as tabulated by source). Decommissioned 1 May 1946 at Charleston, S.C.; struck from the Naval Register, date unknown (per this source); transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal at Charleston, S.C., date unknown, under PDX-225 dated 27 September 1946; sold 20 October 1946 to Creole Petroleum Corporation, New York, N.Y.; final disposition scrapped in 1964. Commanding officers: LTjg. Douglas L. Adams, USNR (16 May 1944-February 1946); LTjg. Richard W. Shreffler, USNR (February 1946-1 May 1946).

    Population
Brown Shipbuilding Co. construction trades (1944); crew (1944-46)
    Limitations
Ship-specific construction, service, and disposal history only; no asbestos or material content. Source is a volunteer compilation citing a 1997 commercial unit-history book (Turner Publishing), not an NHHC/DANFS or NARA-generated record — no individual DANFS entry exists for this unnamed hull (confirmed this session; see search ledger). Struck-from-Register date is explicitly 'date unknown' in this source; a secondary database gives a specific date not corroborated here (see gaps). Does not establish anything about asbestos materials, individual exposure, quantity, or present-day presence — the hull was scrapped in 1964, decades before any asbestos survey regime existed.

    Limitations
Specification data only; no asbestos or material content. Confirms diesel-only propulsion (no steam plant/boilers), which bears on which asbestos-application pathways are era-plausible aboard this hull type (see ev-03). Does not establish quantities, locations, or presence of any specific insulation material aboard this particular hull.

    Finding
Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII — the era and the wartime emergency-contract program under which this LSM-1-class hull was built at Brown Shipbuilding Co. (a yard established in 1941 specifically for wartime Navy construction) — and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization aboard Navy and merchant-type hulls alike.

WWII emergency-shipyard construction trades generally (class/era context)
    Limitations
Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel, this hull class, or this builder specifically, and does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s — a window spanning this hull's entire construction (1944) and Navy service (1944-46).

Program-level documentation; supports era context only, not any fact specific to this hull or its builder. Full text not retrieved — gao.gov returns HTTP 403 to automated fetches (confirmed 2026-10-01, consistent with the standing defect noted in prior batches); content is via the product-page description only.

    Finding type

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LSM-3 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener opinion search for the exact phrase "USS LSM-3" returned 0 results; opinion search for "LSM-3" returned 2 results, both name collisions unrelated to this vessel or to asbestos (Young, Mark Anthony, Tex. Ct. Crim. App., PD-1103-15, 2015 — a Texas criminal appeal; Rosenbloom v. Adams, Scott & Conway, Inc., 521 F. Supp. 372 (S.D.N.Y. 1981) — a securities-fraud civil case); opinion search for "LSM-3" + asbestos returned 0 results; docket/RECAP search for the exact phrase "USS LSM-3" returned 0 results (0 dockets, 0 documents). A further docket-type search on the bare hull number "LSM-3" was not completed — CourtListener returned the fleet-wide pacing message mid-session and was not re-run before this record closed; logged as blocked in the search ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull and no law-firm marketing content specific to it either.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard — and the bare-hull-number docket search is a genuine open gap (not run to completion), not a confirmed negative. NARA deck logs and any Brown Shipbuilding Co. construction or Creole Petroleum civilian-service work records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
