Charleston Navy Yard construction trades 1944; wartime and occupation-era crew (complement 59)
    Limitations
Documents construction, service history, specifications, and disposition - not materials or asbestos content aboard this hull. The underlying history text is a secondary unit-history compilation (Turner Publishing, 1997), hosted and excerpted by NavSource; no official NHHC/DANFS equivalent exists for this hull (see ev-03). Strike-from-register date is explicitly "unknown" per this source.

    Finding
NARA Atlanta finding aid for RG181 Charleston Navy Yard commissioning files lists LSM-300 by hull number and commissioning date (1 January 1945) among 101 Landing Ship, Medium hulls (LSM-126 through LSM-558) commissioned at Charleston, 1939-1945 (boxes 5-9). Corroborates the builder, hull number, and commissioning date independently of NavSource/Turner Publishing.

    Population
Charleston Navy Yard commissioning-ceremony records, 1939-1945
    Limitations
Finding-aid level only; the underlying files are described as commissioning-ceremony correspondence, invitations, and instructions, not construction specifications or material/asbestos content. Files are not digitized online; full-text review would require an in-person or written request to NARA Atlanta. No asbestos content indicated or implied by the finding aid.

  4. [4]NHHC DANFS - direct URL check for an individual LSM-300 entry [nhhc_danfs]
    Locator
https://www.history.navy.mil/research/histories/ship-histories/danfs/l/lsm-300.html (HTTP 404, checked 2026-10-01); NHHC DANFS index and photography catalog searches for "LSM-300"
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
No individual DANFS (Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships) entry exists for USS LSM-300. The direct DANFS URL pattern used by named/renamed LSM hulls (e.g., Hunting, LSM-398; Oceanside, LSM-175) returns HTTP 404 for lsm-300, and no entry for LSM-300 appears in NHHC's online DANFS index or photography catalog. This is consistent with NHHC practice of not writing individual DANFS narratives for bulk-numbered amphibious hulls that were never renamed or did not earn individual campaign distinction beyond unit awards.

CourtListener API v4 search results, type=o and type=r, queried via required authenticated helper (cl-auth-search.py)
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull was located. "USS LSM-300" (opinions) returned 2 hits, both irrelevant token/name collisions unrelated to the vessel or asbestos (Tyrone Berry v. State, Tex. App.-Houston [14th Dist.] 2015, a criminal appeal; Penn Virginia Oil & Gas GP, LLC v. De La Garza, Tex. App.-Houston [1st Dist.] 2015, an oil-and-gas personal-injury case). "LSM-300" (dockets) returned 1 hit, also an irrelevant collision (In re HEI, Inc., Bankr. D. Minn. 15-40009, a Chapter 11 bankruptcy with no asbestos or Navy-vessel content). "LSM 300" (opinions, space variant) returned 0 hits.

    Population
    N/A - negative finding
    Limitations
Three completed queries this session under the fleet-wide CourtListener pacing limit (shared ~114/hr budget); the limit was hit twice mid-session (logged in search ledger) before clearing. Additional phrase variants (e.g., bare hull-number queries without "LSM", or RECAP full-text of the three reviewed hits) were not exhaustively run. All three hits reviewed were confirmed irrelevant from case caption and snippet text, not assumed irrelevant from title alone.

    Finding
NVR ship-details access attempt for LSM-300 redirects (HTTP 302) to a DoD single-sign-on login gate (login.nslc.navy.mil OAM authentication), blocking unauthenticated verification of whatever NVR record may exist for this hull.

Access gap, not a negative finding - NVR is known to publish Commission Date and disposition fields on some ship detail pages, but this page could not be loaded or verified live in this session. No NVR-sourced fact is asserted anywhere in this record as a result.

navsource.net archive page 10/14/14300.htm, propulsion specifications block
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
LSM-300 was diesel-electric: two General Motors 16-278A diesel engines, direct drive, no steam boiler/turbine plant. A 1944-built diesel-powered amphibious hull of this era would be expected to carry period-standard asbestos-containing materials appropriate to a non-steam plant - engine and exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and deck/bulkhead fireproofing - as class/era inference only, not a boiler-lagging-heavy profile like contemporary steam-powered combatants.

    Limitations
Class/era and propulsion-type inference only; no ship-specific finding supports asbestos presence, quantity, or location aboard this hull. Offered as context distinguishing this hull's expected exposure profile (diesel, small crew of 59) from steam-plant vessels in the same WWII construction era.

    Locator
    shipyard-exposure-map shipyards.json, yard_id charleston-naval-shipyard (asbestos_products_documented field and evidence array)
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Builder-yard context: Charleston Naval Shipyard is documented at yard level in the Atlas shipyard dataset (tier 2, class/era), which lists period asbestos products in general use at the yard (magnesia pipe insulation, boiler external coatings, asbestos cement products, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, spray-applied insulation) across its WWII-era peak employment (wwii_peak_employment 25,948) through its 1996 closure. The yard's own evidence set documents later (2014, 2018) asbestos litigation verdicts for Navy veterans who worked there, unrelated to this hull or its 1944-45 construction window.

Charleston Naval Shipyard workforce, 1901-1996 (yard-wide)
    Limitations
Yard-wide context only - describes the builder's general industrial-hygiene profile across its full operating history, not LSM-300's construction specifically. The yard dataset's own flagship evidence is dated decades after this hull's 1944-45 construction and does not name this hull. No ship-specific inference is drawn from this row.
