Crew (5 officers, 54 enlisted per page specifications block)
    Limitations
NavSource's stated history source for this page is 'LSM-LSMR Amphibious Forces, Vol. II' (Turner Publishing, 1997), a secondary compilation, not DANFS; numbered LSMs have no individual DANFS entries (404 verified at NHHC). Documents service history only - contains no asbestos information and establishes nothing about materials aboard. Stricken-date conflict (unknown here vs 27 August 1957 in other secondary compilations) carried in gaps.

    Finding
The official Bureau of Ships tabulation lists 'LSM305 (ex-LCT(7) 1803)' built at Navy Yard, Charleston, S.C. (ditto chain from LSM295 entry), keel laid 30 October 1944, launched 27 November 1944, date of first commission 11 January 1945 - matching the NavSource timeline exactly.

    Limitations
Build-record tabulation only - establishes builder, hull provenance (ordered as LCT(7)-1803), and dates; contains no materials or asbestos information. PDF is a digitization of the 1945 GPO publication hosted on a private mirror (shipscribe.com); content is the official BuShips document.

    Locator
Vol. II, LSM class characteristics table, p. 150 (PDF scan), including footnote 4 engine-model listing
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The LSM class characteristics table gives: length 203'6" overall, beam 34'6", full-load displacement 1,095 tons, complement 5 officers / 54 enlisted, one twin 40mm AA mount, diesel direct drive 2,800 shp on 2 propellers, and diesel-drive ship's service generators (2x100 kW 450V AC, 1x20 kW 120V DC). Footnote 4 lists the hulls fitted with General Motors model 16-278A engines, a range that includes LSM 268-309 and therefore this hull. No boilers or steam system are listed for the class - the plant is diesel only.

    Population
    Crew and construction workforce (class-wide)
    Limitations
Propulsion and characteristics documentation only - the table contains no insulation-materials or asbestos information. The documented absence of a steam plant removes the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway, but this establishes neither the presence nor the absence of other asbestos-containing materials (gaskets, packing, exhaust lagging, electrical insulation) aboard this hull.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The NHHC organization document confirms the existence of LSM Flotilla Sixteen with LSM Group Forty-Seven and its LSM Division Ninety-Three in the Pacific Fleet structure as of 1 May 1945 - the units to which NavSource assigns LSM-305.

    Limitations
Unit-level corroboration only: the online transcription lists 'LSM' entries under Division 93 without hull numbers, so the document does not itself place LSM-305 in Division 93 - that assignment rests on NavSource/Turner alone. Contains no asbestos information.

  5. [5]CourtListener API v4 authenticated searches, 1 October 2026 (see search_ledger): opinion and docket indexes for "LSM-305", "USS LSM-305", and "LSM 305" asbestos - zero results on all five queries [court_record]

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
No qualifying litigation located: no opinion or RECAP docket naming LSM-305 / USS LSM-305 was found in CourtListener, asbestos-related or otherwise. Searches were authenticated and completed (HTTP 200), so this is a true negative result, not a blocked search.

    Limitations
CourtListener coverage is not the full federal docket (PACER) and excludes most state-court and pre-2000 trial-level pleadings; absence from CourtListener does not prove no case was ever filed. An asbestos claim involving a 1944-45 landing ship would most likely have appeared in MDL-875-era filings indexed by vessel lists in pleadings, which are only partially captured in opinion/docket text.

    search_ledger rows sl-uss-lsm-305-01 through sl-uss-lsm-305-12
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum record, or docketed case naming LSM-305 was found in the public sources searched. Additionally, no class-level asbestos materials documentation for the LSM-1 class was located (no design manual describing insulation materials), and no industrial-hygiene study covering Charleston Navy Yard landing-ship construction was found. No individual DANFS entry exists for this hull (NHHC URL returns 404; DANFS covers named ships and a minority of numbered landing ships).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944-45 naval vessel of this size plausibly carried era-standard asbestos in gaskets, packing, and insulation, but that is inference, not documentation. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. NARA deck logs (RG 24) for this hull are undigitized and remain the open primary-source lead.
