    Finding
Documented for this hull: built by Pullman Standard Car Manufacturing Company, Chicago, IL (radio call sign NVLG); laid down 3 August 1944; launched 17 November 1944; commissioned 22 December 1944, LTjg. Donald D. Parker, USNR, in command. Served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater as part of LSM Flotilla Twelve, LSM Group Thirty-Six (as flagship), and LSM Division Seventy-One. Awarded the Navy Occupation Service Medal (20 September-16 November 1945) and the China Service Medal, extended (22 April-3 June 1946). Second commanding officer LTjg. William C. Lyons, USNR (March-June 1946). Decommissioned 3 June 1946 and transferred to the Republic of China the same day; seized in October 1949 by People's Republic of China forces, fate thereafter unknown. Spec block: displacement 520 tons light / 743 tons landing / 1,095 tons full load; length 203'6"; beam 34'6"; speed 13.2 kts; armament one twin 40mm mount and four 20mm guns; capacity for 5 medium tanks or equivalent.

    Pullman-Standard construction trades, Chicago (1944); ship's crew (1944-1946)
    Limitations
Ship-specific identity and service history only; no asbestos or hull-material content whatsoever. NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation (drawing on muster rolls, war diaries, and official photography), not a government primary registry, so its dates are carried with that caveat. A secondary aggregator (uboat.net) gives a 1 June 1946 decommissioning date against NavSource's 3 June 1946 - unresolved, see gaps.

  3. [3]DANFS, LSM-337 (sister hull - same builder, consecutive hull number, commissioned 30 December 1944, eight days after LSM-336; verbatim HyperWar transcription) [nhhc_danfs]

    Finding
DANFS entry for the next hull off the same Pullman Standard, Chicago, ways documents the standard pattern for this hull-number block: built at Pullman Standard Car Manufacturing Co., Chicago; entered service under a junior officer (Ens. Robert F. Davies); saw no combat during World War II; decommissioned in 1946; transferred to the Republic of China in 1948. Cited only as class/sister-hull context illustrating the typical non-combat, early-postwar-disposal profile shared by this builder's LSM block - NOT a record of LSM-336 itself.

    Limitations
This is sister hull LSM-337's own DANFS entry, not LSM-336's. No individual DANFS/NHHC entry was located for LSM-336 (predictable URL pattern returned HTTP 404; see search_ledger) - not all numbered, non-combat LSM hulls received individual DANFS write-ups. Contains no asbestos content. LSM-337's transfer-to-China date (1948) differs from LSM-336's (1946) - the two hulls' postwar dispositions are not identical despite consecutive construction.

  4. [4]U.S. Navy, LSM Class Manual, Section II, Chapter 30 "Main Propelling Machinery" (1 March 1944, Serial No. 1766, issued to USS LSM-294; mirrored via NavSource LSM Class Manual index) [other_primary]
    Locator
LSM Class Manual, Section II, Ch. 30, pp. 30-1 through 30-4
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The class manual's own hull-number table assigns propelling-machinery make by hull block: Fairbanks Morse Model 38D8 1/8 diesels on Nos. 1-125, 126-141, 201-232, 253-269, and 310-331; General Motors Model 16-278A diesels on Nos. 142-200, 233-252, 270-294, 295-309, and 332-353. LSM-336 falls within the 332-353 block and is therefore built with two General Motors Model 16-278A, 16-cylinder Vee, compression-ignition, two-cycle, fresh-water-cooled diesel engines, each rated 1,440 BHP continuous / 1,800 BHP emergency at 720/800 RPM, each fitted with one wet-type exhaust muffler, pneumatically operated reversing gear, and attached fuel-oil/lube-oil/circulating-water pumps and filters. Main propelling machinery is located in the engine room, compartment B-1, between frames 19 and 25.

    Population
    Pullman-Standard construction trades, Chicago (1944); engine-room crew (1944-1946)
    Limitations
This is a class/BuShips technical manual (issued to sister hull LSM-294, not a hull-336-titled document), but its own hull-number assignment table explicitly places LSM-336 in the General Motors engine block, so propulsion-plant identity is documented for this specific hull rather than inferred from class generality alone. The chapter reviewed (Ch. 30, Main Propelling Machinery) describes equipment, dimensions, and weights - it does not use the word "asbestos" and does not describe insulation/lagging materials; other chapters of the same manual (piping, ventilating systems) that might address lagging/insulation were not reviewed this session - open lead, see gaps.

  5. [5]Era inference built on: LSM Class Manual Ch. 30 (diesel-direct-drive plant, no steam plant - no boiler/turbine lagging pathway); GAO HRD-80-2 (Navy-wide shipboard asbestos insulation use through the early 1970s, ev-05) [other_primary]

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
As a twin-screw diesel-direct-drive landing ship with no steam plant, era-standard asbestos-relevant systems aboard a vessel of this type and period were not boiler/turbine lagging but exhaust/muffler lagging on the main-engine exhaust runs, main-engine and auxiliary-equipment gaskets and valve packing, electrical cable insulation, and general machinery-space thermal insulation in the confined engine-room volume (compartment B-1).

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, work package, or Pullman-Standard yard-level asbestos-exposure study (e.g., no NIOSH HHE was located for this builder) was found for LSM-336. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution for this hull.

    Finding type
    gov_survey
    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s; Navy policy through 1975 was to remove asbestos insulation only when damaged or when removal was necessary to accomplish repairs, moving to more proactive replacement in high-traffic maintenance areas by 1979.

1975-1979 (report); Navy-wide asbestos-use era described as extending into the early 1970s
    Population
Navy shipyard workers generally; asbestos program review
    Limitations
Program-level documentation focused on Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards and on Navy policy evolution generally (1975-1979); supports era context only, not any fact specific to this hull, its builder, or its 1944-46 service window. Direct automated fetch (curl) of gao.gov returns HTTP 403, same block documented in prior Atlas batches; product-page content was retrieved and summarized via an authenticated fetch tool this session (verified live by that path, 2026-10-01). Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying court record naming USS LSM-336 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). Secondary web sweeps for "LSM-336" plus asbestos/mesothelioma/lawsuit surfaced no qualifying case - only generic Navy/shipyard-asbestos marketing content not naming this hull, excluded by source policy.
