Live NHHC page at history.navy.mil/research/histories/ship-histories/danfs/l/lsm-337.html returned HTTP 404 on 2026-10-01 (confirmed via direct fetch); no Wayback Machine capture of that URL was found either (checked via archive.org Availability API, 2026-10-01). The HyperWar/ibiblio transcription is used as the standing DANFS-text source, consistent with the same link-rot pattern documented in prior batches (BATCH-01, BATCH-98). Gives no laid-down or launch date. The displacement figure 'dp. .9' is evidently a transcription/OCR artifact and is not usable; not carried as a displacement claim. Contains no asbestos, insulation, or material content.

Pullman Standard construction trades (1944); ship's crew and three successive commanding officers (1944-46)
    Limitations
Volunteer-maintained secondary compilation (sourced to a 1997 Turner Publishing unit history), not a government primary record - corroborates but does not independently verify DANFS. Gives a laid-down date (10 Aug 1944) that falls AFTER its own stated launch date (30 Jun 1944) for the same hull - an internal chronological impossibility in the source itself, not resolved by this research (see gaps). Spells the first CO's surname 'Davis' vs DANFS 'Davies'. All seven photo captions give 'date and location unknown' except one dated/located image (Guam, April 1946); none depict machinery, insulation, or interior spaces. No asbestos or material content anywhere on the page.

CORRECTION/conflict flagged, not adopted: a general ship-type index page on the same HyperWar site ('Ships of the U.S. Navy, 1940-1945', compiled by Patrick Clancey, last updated 2001) lists USS LSM-337 under an 'LSM-210 class' heading with 'Built at Pullman, Chicago, and commissioned 17 June 1944' - a commissioning date five-and-a-half months earlier than the date given by both DANFS and NavSource (30 December 1944) for the same hull, and a different class label than either DANFS ('LSM-201') or NavSource ('LSM-1 class').

    Limitations
This page is a general type/class index, not a transcribed DANFS entry, and is NOT treated as authoritative where it conflicts with DANFS proper - the 30 December 1944 commissioning date (DANFS + NavSource, two independent agreeing sources) is carried in this record; the 17 June 1944 date is logged here as an unresolved conflict only. Does not establish or imply any asbestos content.

Builder/yard background: Pullman Standard Car Manufacturing Company established a shipbuilding division in 1943 at Lake Calumet, Chicago ('on the north side of 130th Street, at the most southerly point of the lake'), operating for approximately two years. Construction used modular assembly: hulls were 'built in 40-ton blocks... the blocks being assembled in a fab shop on 111th Street and moved to the yard on gondola cars.' The division built 34 PCEs (180 ft, 640 tons) and 44 LSMs (203 ft, 520 tons) in that period; 'no sign of a shipyard there now' remains at the site. The broader LSM building program (navalmarinearchive's separate LSM-class page) totaled 558 LSM hulls plus 60 LSM(R) and 6 LSV variants, built by seven yards (Brown Shipbuilding Houston, Charleston Navy Yard, Dravo Corp. Wilmington, Western Pipe & Steel San Pedro, Federal Shipbuilding Newark, Pullman Standard Chicago, and others for LSV variants) between April 1944 and November 1945.

Independent maritime-history archive, not an official Navy/NPS/NARA source - used here as builder/program background only, not as evidence of any fact specific to this hull. Contains no mention of workforce size, materials, insulation, or asbestos at the Pullman Standard yard; explicitly does not address industrial materials. Does not establish any asbestos claim.

CourtListener was queried this session (not blocked/throttled - all requests returned HTTP 200) for exact phrase "USS LSM-337" (opinion: 0 hits; docket/RECAP: not separately phrase-queried), bare "LSM-337" (opinion: 1 hit - Tyrone Berry v. State, Tex. App. 2015, an unrelated Texas criminal appeal matched only by OCR noise in a scanned filing, classified name collision/no qualifying result; docket/RECAP: 1 hit - an Oklahoma bankruptcy docket entry numbered '337' in an unrelated real-estate matter, classified name collision/no qualifying result), and "LSM-337" asbestos (opinion: 0 hits). No qualifying asbestos litigation, other litigation, or name match naming this hull was found.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 diesel landing craft of this type and era is era-consistent with some asbestos-containing machinery/electrical insulation, gaskets, and packing, but nothing ship-specific was found. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. CourtListener coverage of 1940s-era small-craft litigation (if any exists) may be incomplete regardless of search discipline.

    Finding
Internal date conflict flagged, not resolved: NavSource states this hull was 'Laid down, 10 August 1944' and separately 'Launched, 30 June 1944' - the stated launch date precedes the stated laid-down date by over six weeks, which is chronologically impossible for the same hull. DANFS gives no laid-down or launch date at all for cross-check. A third source (HyperWar ship-type index, ev-03) gives a commissioning date of 17 June 1944, which would place commissioning before even the earlier of NavSource's two (mutually contradictory) construction dates. No source reconciling these dates was located.
